While this book wasn’t what I was expecting, I want to declare right at the outset that it was REALLY REALLY GOOD! The author, Aidan Hartley, is a journalist and The Zanzibar Chest is his memoir of his childhood, being born and raised in Tanzania, and also the years of his 20′s and 30′s, when he was war correspondent in Africa. The son of a British military colonial, Aidan’s family had a rich history of living the ex-pat life. Weaving in tales of his father’s life in Africa, Aidan Hartley narrates a scene of beauty, love, fear and loss. At night, lions grunted and roared and the hollow volcanic hill rumbled as rhino cantered by … “We were in a paradise,” said my father, “that we can never forget, nor equal.”As the book progresses, the reader is a fly on the wall, observing the life of a young journalist. “I remember how an American dropped his trousers for a group of us at the bar and boasted how he’d lost his left testicle in a Balkans mine blast, which he claimed hadn’t prevented him from seducing a nurse during his recovery in a Budapest hospital.”As Hartley finds himself in the midst of war-torn Somalia, Serbia and Rwanda, his writing becomes darker and eventually he cannot distance himself from the horror. “They say we journalists ignored the story for months. We were there all the time. What’s true is that we didn’t understand at the time the full magnitude of what was happening. I was an ant walking over the rough hide of an elephant. I had no idea of the scale of what I was witnessing.”I highly, highly recommend this superb memoir.

I just can't resist true stories by journalists. And this book, subtitled "a story of life, love and death in foreign lands" is that kind of book. It allows me to be an armchair traveler and live vicariously without having to take any risks. And it also teaches me a lot.The author, Aidan Hartley, is descended from a long line of British colonialists. He was born in western Africa in 1965, attended college in England, and came home to Africa as a journalist. This book is about those experiences. But, woven throughout, is the story of a friend of his father's who met a mysterious and violent death. Aidan found a diary of this man in a chest after his father's death - hence, the title of the book.If the book was just about this quest, however, I would have been bored, because his findings all happened in the past. What intrigued me most were the author's more recent experiences, experiences which seemed to include several lifetimes of being where the action was.A lot of things happened in Africa in the 1990s. And Aidan Hartley was there, risking his life and covering the stories for Reuters. He was there in Somalia when the Americans sent in troops. He was there during the famine in Ethiopia. He was there in Rwanda during the massacres. And he was in the Balkans during the bombing in Belgrade. The stories were fascinating. But his own reaction to them and how he lived was even more interesting.He writes about other journalists and bonding with them over alcohol and other drugs. He writes about his romance with a photographer named Lizzie. He writes from the heart about the destruction and despair. And he writes about the stories that Reuters wouldn't print and the politics involved in his profession.The events came alive for me - the sounds, the smells, and the danger. Through it all was the ultimate frustration of not being able to change anything. There are odd insights and unique word pictures that I'll always remember. Like that of a fellow journalist who was trying to stay in shape during the Ethiopian famine. And so he jogged every day along the same road on which the emaciated and starving people were struggling to stay alive. And then he writes about the celebrities who brought attention to the problem and the photographers that followed them around. He tells that that when Sophia Loren was there, there were such mobs of people following her around that they didn't notice that they were trampling on a small starving boy who was too weak to crawl out of the way. Rwanda was another horror, with hacked corpses everywhere. Once, they found a small boy still alive in a mass grave. They rushed him to the hospital. It was a story that made big news and it was reported that he was given intravenous fluids and recovered. But the truth was that the boy died; that story was never printed. Hartley then raises the question which he asked himself at the time, if it might not have been better to let the small boy die with his mother.The stories are sad. And they affected him deeply. Eventually he was no longer assigned to the front lines. Most of his journalist buddies were dead, having had the bad luck to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It was difficult for him to re-adjust to a world where horrors are not the stuff of his daily experiences. It took him a few years, but he did recover. He is now living with his wife and two young children in the Kenyan countryside. This 479 page book is his legacy.Yes, I do recommend the book although I sure did wish the publisher had included a map of Africa. Just understand though, this is not a book to make you smile.

This is a truly amazing and moving book. It is rare indeed to find such a writing talent in the same person as such an intrepid adventure hound. I won't summarize the book, as other reviewers here have done so well enough.At first I was taken aback by Hartley's matter-of-fact renditions of horrific war scenes. By the end of the book it becomes apparent that he has seen so much of an unbelievably hellish nature that it is more amazing that he survived emotionally enough to tell the story at all. Many of the graphic stories here of the wars and violence in Africa and the Balkans are not for the squeamish, so be forewarned. On the other hand Hartley's stories of his family's history in Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are extremely tender.On the book jacket, a reviewer describes Hartley as a "Hieronymous Bosch reincarnated as a frontline correspondent". To me he seems more like a Dante who has visited both Paradise and Inferno and has produced an astonishing and breathtaking narrative. Not only that, his writing is nothing short of eloquent.The suggestion by some other reviewers that there are only a dozen pages about the "Zanzibar chest" itself is misleading. The chest contained the diaries of Hartley's father's friend Peter Davey. One of the major threads in the book is Hartley's retracing Davey's life and travels. Hartley tells many stories about Davey and his father's relationship with him, which occupy at least 60 pages of the book. However this is only one thread of many.This book is also helpful in understanding some of the historical context for the genocide in Rwanda and Burundi, as well as events in Somalia (leading to the "Black Hawk Down" incident).By random coindence, I read this just after reading Chris Hedges' "War is a Force that Gives Us Meaning". I found the latter to be a tremendous help in understanding the mentality of someone like Aidan Hartley, who was so clearly addicted to putting himself in harm's way to get the story and so clearly at a loss when he wasn't able to.

I purchased this text and the Learn Visual Basic to help me brush up on my programming skills and add the database knowledge. I have just begun but have already found the format to be perfect for me! The textbooks are so inviting with the larger print and excellent graphics. There are files that you download from the Internet if you purchased a new copy used to complete the lessons. I had an issue downloading using Internet Explorer 11. Using Chrome resolved the problem.I can hardly put these books down! They are beautifully written, logical, and easy to follow.I know the knowledge obtained from these courses will be valuable in my workplace.

I love this paperback book; I'm flabbergasted by it. I love it so much I came back and bought the other edition "Learn Visual Basic". Disclaimer: I am not a true programmer, I only dabble in it for work as it is needed. However, I have purchased many programming books over the years and this is, for me anyway, the best by far. Everything about this book is large, in a good way. The pages are big and the print is in a large font for easy reading. The pages are not so filled that it overwhelms you with being too busy. There is plenty of white space on the pages for writing notes. None of those distracting cutesy side notes attempting humor. A+ for Philip Conrod and Lou Tylee.

After reading numerous books on databases and visual basic this is the first one that has made me confident about using visual basic with databases. Used with the authors other book "Learn Visual Basic" it has at last allowed me to be one step closer to actually understanding what you have to do to be able to code real and useful apps in VB. The teaching is straightforward and easily absorbed and the practice and exercise are repetitive enough to take in the material without being boring.

After reading several books to learn . Net, VB, SQL, ADO. Net and MS Visual Studio, finally I found one book which helped me to grasp and master concepts of database programming in applications. THANK YOU Authors, for the simple style of writing and presenting the correct concepts at the correct time so learning was easy.

Extremely helpful with easy to read text. I wish it had an index at the end, though, but you can't have everything. Thanks to this book, I am developing my own Windows Aps and have written for and made happy several clients. Good learning book.

The content of the book is excellent. It starts with the basics and graduates in small and clear but functional increments. It makes database programming much easier to teach and learn.“Visual Basic and Databases: A Step-By-Step Database Programming Tutorial” provides a complete, thorough, and easy to understand explanation of database program development from two people who came up through the ranks as software developers. Their examples reflect real-world applications that will help new developers quickly master database software development. Students can easily convert and expand the examples for their own applications. For example, the Books Database in Chapter 4 could easily be modified to search a similar database of cars, bikes, or passwords, etc.Examples are created using Microsoft’s Access database management system (DBMS) and SQL Server. This makes it easy for the student to compare their capabilities and syntax.I have sincerely enjoyed reading and working through the examples in, “Visual Basic and Databases: A Step-By-Step Database Programming Tutorial”. The examples are clear and easy to follow. If I had any questions or if my code did not work I could simply peek at the authors’ completed code examples to get back on track.Throughout the book the authors bring attention to the importance of user interface (UI) design. This is more important than may be obvious at first but developers tend to focus on the code and forget about the UI but eventually someone needs to use this program so a functional and attractive presentation of the program can be the difference between success and failure of the end product.A major plus for this text is how the authors include additional and very useful parallel topics such as the On-Line Help system created in HTML in Chapter 5 and the Graphics Methods in Chapter 7. The book is not about HTML or graphics but the coincidental inclusion gives the student a valuable glimpse at other topics of importance. These are just two examples that didn’t have to be included but they are added as part of other chapters and will ultimately benefit the student. This took a lot of forethought by the authors and demonstrates the real value of the book.As a programmer, a long-time college professor, and as the former head of the Computer, Engineering, and Business Department, I have reviewed countless programming books for most of the popular programming languages. “Visual Basic and Databases: A Step-By-Step Database Programming Tutorial” by Conrod and Tylee is my favorite text for helping developers make the leap into the rewarding field of database development. This is by far one of the best books I've read on being effective. I've talked so much about it to others that they want to buy a copy. A manager at my work was completely impressed when I was describing how I was implementing it at work. He even said that we need more people like me. My niece who is a high school student told me that she wants to read it. One of my wife's friends who is also an engineer was in awe when I described the contents of the book.

More of a "tips and tricks" book, I kind of got really annoyed when he referenced "The Checklist Manifesto" to say you should make todo lists, which is pretty much the opposite of what "The Checklist Manifesto" is about.

I am already practising some of the things mentioned in the book but I enjoyed how the book is structured. The war stories are great as well and resonate with me deeply. I highly recommend all professional engineers to read this book.

A fantastic read for anyone looking to jump-start their own investigations in to best practice. It's definitely an engineer's book from an engineer's perspective which makes it all the more satisfying to read -- very thoughtfully designed with excellent word economy. At over 80 pages, this book is packed with 24 projects containing step-by-step illustrated instructions using common materials in your recycle bin. Most of the projects have a high play value as they can move in water, across the table or through the air or be used in imaginative play. Many of the projects do not require parent input, but I have enjoyed making many of these projects along with my children. The book is nicely interspersed with stories and games which engage children even when they aren't in the mood to create a project. It's nice to see a book that empowers parents in showing their children concrete examples of how they can re-use common household items in creative and playful ways. I think this book would make a great birthday or Christmas present without being cost prohibitive.

And you can't do it yourself without this book. I started out barley nowing how to change a light bulb. Last week I just completed the do-hickey mod thanks to this book.

I have always been impressed with the Clymer line of service manuals. I bought my 2008 KLR650 used and the owner had lost the original owner's manual. These are far more useful. There are detailed procedures for just about any service you would care to perform, and they cost less than factory manuals. They provide lots of pictures and detailed write-ups to help you out. You can't go wrong with a Clymer manual.

I read it at night for about a week. marking all the important parts. a lot of the stuff in it I wouldn't try but I really like knowing how things work. a treasure trove of information.

Book arrived on time, in good shape and as described. Very good book with plenty of information on the bike. Makes life easier and more economical, no need to take the bike to those $$ mechanics

I'm using this in addition to my OEM service manual. Both have their uses.This manual will warn you when you are about to do something stupid. So it's great for noobs.It also has LOTS of detailed photos. In general I rely on the Clymer more than the OEM.I found a few minor errors, mostly pictures of previous gen KLRs. There were one or two of those with the electrical system.Overall though I'm really happy with it.Where it could use some serious improvement is with listing of torque specifications. It for the most part just doesn't tell you what the torque is supposed to be. (sometimes it does, but there is no table listing.) You really have to have that right or you can break your bike pretty badly. (as I did).The OEM has proper torque specs and a handy table for quick look up.
