This author was in high school with my children 20+ years ago, and her parents are friends. So, of course, I wanted to read Jessica's first published book. That's why I bought it. But that's not why I've chosen to review it and give it a five-star rating.Those stars were earned because this is not only a beautifully written book and a compelling story, it is also a book that required (on the part of the author) courage, intelligence, research, and brutal honesty to peel back the layers of lies, truth, perception, and raw emotion around several years of her life. It is ultimately a book about humanity and the many ways each person chooses to cope with life, luck (good and bad), hardship, and the stories we tell ourselves in an attempt to make sense of it all. it is also a fascinating and clear-eyed perspective on the challenges of coming of age in the late 1990s and the cultural and psychological impact of 9/11 on our whole society.Jessica toured for several years as a violinist with an ensemble who only pretended to play and the audience heard only canned music. This alone was a strange and fascinating story. Her myriad physical and mental health issues during this time were hard to read about, but she poignantly depicted the turbulence and danger of youthful anxiety and stress. The author tells her story with honesty and compassion...compassion for her young self and for the parents she knows she is lucky to have.Some of the writing took my breath away as it pulled me into her world and experiences. Her description of the emotional impact of the music she played on the violin in a high school concert from Fritz Kreisler's "Praeludium and Allegro in the style of Pugnani" was one of the most brilliant and masterful pieces of writing about a powerful musical experience I've ever read (think Ann Patchett's passages about opera in Bel Canto).Besides writing exquisitely, besides bringing us a fascinating story, besides taking us on a thoughtful journey through turn-of-the-21st-century culture and societal landmarks, Jessica Hindman has also shown us how to look at life, sift through the clues to its meaning, and find the strength to identify and hang on to what's true and worth preserving—how to navigate the pain, confusion, and messiness and still emerge with newfound insights, convictions, and appreciations—ones that will serve you well for the next leg of your journey.Bravo, Jessica. You've reminded us that we must never let anyone else define success for us. It is ours alone to define and embrace, as you have clearlydone in your own life.

I usually stick to fiction, because a character's life as invented by the author has to be more interesting than the real lives of people around us. But Jessica's account of working for The Composer is weirder than fiction. Sure, it's a story about being a violinist in fake concerts, but also manages to be a study on the nature of memoir, reality, growing up female in the nineties, undergraduate class conflict, a tour of America at war, and the unreliable narrator in our own heads.I really appreciated the vulnerability she put into this book. It allows even a reader with the most boring life to relate to the sometimes crazy experiences the author had. While Jessica is critiquing her young self for her inability to make a living doing something important, I'm admiring all of the ways that she at least tried, harder than most people ever try at anything. Before I even finished reading this book it was obvious that she had managed to do something important and creative: This book is brilliant. I can't wait to read what she writes next.

Most modern memoir writers fall short by relating and describing less than completely believable situations or characters. In short, they seem not quite honest or even almost fake. I doubt that any reader of "Sounds Like Titanic" will come to any such conclusion. Ms Hindman's memoir grabbed me from the beginning, kept me involved and interested and concerned throughout and when she emerged from her travails triumphant (almost, sort of) I wanted to cheer. This author may not have had the "rey ell gift" as a violinist but she certainly does as a writer. She's now one of my favorites.

This book grab me from the first sentence. It was well recommended to me, but I didn’t quite grasp the concepts… She’s playing music, but she’s not really playing?? It unfolds beautifully and so very honest Lee. I hope we hear from her again soon.

One thing I REALLY hated about this book: it ended! And the end snuck up on me like the end of my own musical career (replaced by a career in computers.). Keep writing Melissa...you have a reeayeall (sp?) gift! Peace

Some achieving success such as Batman and Robin, while Captain American had a sidekick named Bucky, which didn't last long but became integral to Captain America storylines over the years.But while Robin and Bucky, may have been one of the memorable sidekicks, there have been forgetful sidekicks. Some who played major roles when they were conceived back in the golden and silver age of comic books. But have been forgotten since then.Writer Jon Morris explores these sidekicks with his new book "The League of Regrettable Sidekicks: Heroic Helpers from Comic Book History!" from Quirk Books. Jon also has a cool blog worth checking out titled, "Gone & Forgotten".For the book "The League of Regrettable Sidekicks: Heroic Helpers from Comic Book History!", Morris tackles sidekicks from the Golden Age, The Silver Age and The Modern Age.Not so much the popular titles but more of the forgotten sidekicks, so you are not going to see Wonder Woman and Steve Trevor, Aquaman or Aqualad, Flash and Kid Flash or even Batman and Robin.This book focuses on those sidekicks that some may never knew existed in comic books.From early sidekicks such as The Agatha Detective Agency who appeared in Startling Comics and was partners with the hero Captain Future. The aquatic heroes, Barry & Algie featured in Yankee Comics in 1941. Also, Fatman who partnered with Tex Thompson and Mr. America/The Americommando for DC Comics back in 1938. Or Plastic Man's partner, Woozy Winks in Police Comics (Quality Comics).And of course, exploring so many other heroes and sidekicks, including Captain Marvel's many sidekicks.One thing I was wondering if there would be any Gold Key comics sidekicks featured and sure enough, Morris featured 1A, the sidekick of Magnus, Robot Fighter.While it would be cool to have featured Krypto, Streaky and Beppo (the animal sidekicks for Superman), they do feature Supergirl's flying horse Comet.What I enjoyed about the book is learning of characters I had no idea about. I never knew about the Joker's sidekick, Gaggy the Dwarf in the pages of "Batman". Nor did I know of the water sprite, Quisp, featured in "Aquaman". Nor have I heard of Superman, Jr. in the pages of "Superman".I was aware of Rick Jones, who was featured on "The Incredible Hulk" and then "The Avengers" and often played the disgruntled friend of the Avengers who never got to go anywhere, because he didn't have superhuman abilities. But never saw him as a sidekick but more of the pause filler character to introduce some emotional (or comedy, depending on how you looked at it) element.But Morris does a magnificent job in showcasing as many heroes as possible in "The League of Regrettable Sidekicks: Heroic Helpers from Comic Book History!".Entertaining, well-written and researched! If you are a fan of comic books, especially the historic side of learning about heroes from a bygone era, especially their sidekicks, then definitely give Jon Morris' "The League of Regrettable Sidekicks: Heroic Helpers from Comic Book History!" a try!Highly recommended!

The League of Regrettable SIdekicks is a follow-up to Jon Morris's previous books on regrettable superheroes and villains. I've read the superheroes one and plan to read the villains one someday, too. Lovingly curated, Morris gives humorous descriptions of the characters and the context of their existence (sometimes part of a fashion catalog, sometimes a reaction to another more popular character, etc.). One or more pages from the comics are included with each listing, so you can see exactly what's being described.Of course, the best part of the book is Morris's sense of humor. In the information at the margin of each page, there is always a very clever send-up of the characters, and Morris is great at both describing the comics with affection and mercilessly ridiculing them. This kind of book would not be any fun at all if it weren't apparent that the author genuinely loves comics and is fascinated by both the good and the bad.This is the kind of book that you can peck away at, rather than buzz through in a sitting. The hardcover backing and good paper quality makes this a fine product, great as a coffee table book or a supplement to a classic comics collection. The Superheroes one was a bit fresher and would be the best place to start, but if you enjoy that you'll certainly like this too.

Almost what I expect now from John Morris' "Regrettable" series about comic books.The book is divided into 3 parts -- Golden Age, Silver Age, and Modern Age -- which has meaning for the comic geeks out there. If you aren't familiar with these periods, there is a brief introduction to each before them. Golden Age has 42 entries and two-page focus article on Captain Marvel sidekicks. SIlver Age has 26 entries and a two-page focus article on Superman sidekicks. Modern Age has 28 entries and two two-page focus articles on Captain America sidekicks and Richie Rich sidekicks.Most of the entries are two-pages, one with a a page from the comic or a few images from it and then a page of text; the layout alternates every other page. Some sidekicks have extra pages with more images and texts such as The Agatha Detective Agency and Tiny but these are only in the Golden Age part of the book. Why? I would think we've have more pages from comics closer to 2018 not the other way around.My hubby and I enjoyed reading this book together and we hope there are more in the series. Brainstorming we came up with at last a half dozen more themes for "regrettable" comic book investigations.

I purchased this book on the recommendation of a coworker. I was hesitant to purchase this book as I had mixed feelings of why I was encouraged to read this book but I am so glad I did. Up until this book I did not know much of condelezza's accomplished life or her struggles. This book also gave me a different political perspective on various government programs and concepts. I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in Ms. Rice's career or her political perspective. Great read!

I have always loved Condoleezza Rice. So I knew that I'd love this book. However, I was totally enthralled by her writing; this book was an easy and natural read. Not a single part was uninteresting. One would expect to discover large events in such an exceptional life, and Ms. Rice's life was filled with such accomplishments. You can understand how her family's support and her personality combined to produce the successful, lovely person she is. Having read and thoroughly enjoyed this book, I intend to read her other books. This was one of those experiences where I savored the reading and was very sorry to reach the end. I'm just a deer in her headlights.

This is an extraordinary book written by a woman I've long admired. CONDOLEEZZA RICE: A MEMOIR OF MY EXTRAORDINARY, ORDINARY FAMILY AND ME won the NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Literary Work for Youth/Teens. But even an old white geezer like me was able to dovetail its messages into my ordinary life and realize that special people are inspirations to be listened to and emulate.Reading for enjoyment is my most important goal. But learning from what I read is almost as important and sometimes ignored. In Dr. Rice's book I heard three important messages; cherish your parents and the heritage they have given you, keep your vision strong and focused, and don't give in to lesser urges that threaten to disrupt your life's journey. I have bumbled through three-quarters of a century skirting the edges of all three.I have followed the career of this beautiful and skilled woman, never failing to be moved by her lifework. Her remarkable rise to be Secretary of State for the United States of America is a story every person, young or old, should honor. Her spirit, willingness to accept any challenge, and ability to overcome obstacles of race, gender, and age are traits unlike any other I've witnessed. I see pride, devotion, and a certain pugnacious attitude towards criticism that has propelled her to the forefront of world leaders.We may never know the true story of her behind-the-scenes comportment. I sensed a certain resistance to interference with her priorities in her writing. I suspect that she voiced opinions that were so strong and well-grounded that opposition was seldom exercised. Her racial opinions are reasoned and forceful, yet easily accepted by all except those who don't really deserve a platform. And she plays the piano beautifully, a talent not easily attained. I feel certain that there was immense respect for her with perhaps undertones of resentment and jealousy. Those negative feelings were probably shed by Dr. Rice with graceful ease.This book is important, I think, because of the message it sends to people everywhere that there's really only one right way to pursue life, and that's with a dedication to doing the "right" thing. We all know in our hearts the definition of the "right" thing. Following that knowledge without wavering is the answer to being a happy and valued member of this world. It sounds lofty, but is certainly identifiable and within reach. But it does take effort, something on which Dr. Rice didn't skimp.A big part of that effort is maintaining the love and involvement of your family. Dr. Rice's love of her parents is presented in the strongest and most unapologetic expression I've ever read.
