About the Author

Leah Remini is an actor, producer, and writer. A fixture on television since the age of eighteen, Remini is best known for her beloved role of Carrie on the nine-season hit The King of Queens. Remini went on to produce and star in one of the earliest and most successful comedic web series, In the Motherhood, and appeared in the movie Old School alongside Will Ferrell and Vince Vaughn. In 2010, Remini helped launch and co-hosted the first season of the CBS daytime hit show The Talk, and in 2013 she was seen on the dance floor in Dancing with the Stars. She currently co-stars in the TV Land comedy The Exes and TLC’s reality show Leah Remini: It’s All Relative, which she also created and executive produces. An avid 'King of Queens' fan and Leah handling Twitter after 'The Talk' debacle, add a sheer curiosity about Scientology, this book was the answer!Leah, in complete generosity, gives us an intimate look into her family and Scientology.She begins in her early childhood. If you, like me, have tried wrapping your mind around anyone choosing to jump into Scientology, you will finally gain insight! She explains Scientology so generously even after everything she went through. She gives the details of classes, procedures and orders very succinctly. She describes, eloquently, the people involved in the beginning to the bitter end. Yet doesn't have a tone of hate or bitterness. Quite a feat!The surprise for me was her detailed, funny and poignant stories about agents, auditions and jobs she's had. She's brutally honest....even about herself. She openly discusses other celebrities and it is a treat!It's open and honest. I'd dare say even if you don't adore Leah, if you want a look into showbiz and what it takes to make it...you will enjoy. If you want a detailed look into Scientology.....you will enjoy. If you just like learning more about different celebrities...you will enjoy. Regardless, you will enjoy and I dare say, come away with a respect for Leah and an admiration.

It's 7:20 AM as I write this, and I haven't slept since I started reading this book, moments after downloading it. I'm about 80% done at this point, but had to stop and post this early review (I'll update this a bit when I'm 100% done). I've never been much of a fan of sitcoms, so I'm not exactly part of the audience who has had much experience with Leah's acting work - although I knew who she was, certainly. I'd seen enough however to know I found her appealing and incredibly attractive long before I learned she'd be writing this just from what I'd seen in an episode of two of King of Queens. When I heard advance word of the release, having read just about every book there is on the subject of Scientology (from Inside Scientology, to Bare Faced Messiah, to Beyond Belief to The Unbreakable Miss Lovely), from personal accounts to journalistic exposes, I eagerly anticipated Troublemaker. The biggest surprise for me, first off, is how supremely readable "Troublemaker" is - how entertaining, honest, unpretentious, shocking and just plain funny it is. Leah has a big mouth, and she knows it, but her writing speaks directly to the reader in an open and unfiltered way that books written by celebrities rarely do. She isn't a bulls***ter, and she's not going to sugarcoat anything, including her herself. She even starts with something of a confession of past perceived sins, as she is all to aware that Scientology will strike at her as they are known to do, by using information gleaned from auditing to embarrass, intimidate and discredit. She knows she is now "fair game." Even with the little that I knew about her, her account of her early years with her family and struggles as an actress are highly entertaining, and make an honest impression that makes you feel more like a confidant than a reader. For this type of book, it is, surprisingly, very well written - free of fanciful prose, but deeply engaging, concise and highly personal. The early biographical chapters are vital, as it turns out, as it sets a very clear stage for why she was bound to one day become a monumental thorn in the side of Scientology. A theme that pops up a few times is how Leah was sometimes perceived as "lacking in class" (code sometimes used to discredit or embarrass truth tellers, female ones in particular) in comparison to the norm of perceived celebrities and society's elite. This book shows, clearly, that she has more class than the majority of Hollywood's elite put together. I can't wait to read the remaining 20%, and regardless of my ignorance of her acting career, with this book she's become one of my favorite people. If only more people in the world had the guts that Leah clearly has. More so than even the recent Going Clear documentary, this book, in my opinion, has the potential to expose Scientology for the abusive, draining, exploitative, paranoid and disingenuous organization that it has become, the Church of Cruise and Miscavige. And if you're looking for a real window into the bizarre, rarefied world of celebrity scientologists (Leah attending Tom Cruise's wedding to Katie Holmes, for example, and the subsequent fallout after she is brazenly manipulated to get J Lo and Marc Anthony to attend as well, is jaw dropping) you need look no further. Highly, highly recommended.

I admit, I haven’t really watched a lot of stuff with Leah Remini, I’m familiar with her from King of Queens, but that is about it. My mother has indicated that she has been on a lot of the talk shows lately talking about this book. I picked it up mostly for the insight into Scientology. I was not disappointed, but in the process of learning a bit more about scientology, there were some really interesting insights into her childhood, as well as her experiences getting into show businesses.This is a very quick read and it starts off right away by jumping into the issue of Scientology, so, if that is the reason why you are picking up the book, I recommend it for that aspect. I think that it is also useful to get the perspective of someone who is brought into Scientology through their family and it discusses how the appeal of the organization somewhat lured her mother into the organization and kept her persisting in it as an adult. It’s actually a really good insight/manual into understanding psychological aspect of cults, even if it is unintentional, it provides a personal aspect to one’s reflection on the process.It actually kind of highlights an abusive relationship with the organization, one in which a person stays even when it’s clear it might not be the healthiest relationship. Think riding a boat to the middle of nowhere and getting dumped in the water. However, these things are told in personal narratives, which Leah at no point is trying to label or, but just tell a story. At the same time, there are a lot of rewards that are highlighted for being a member of Scientology, especially in terms of networking within the Hollywood circles.It is also interesting to see how the fall-out and consequences for breaking with the church comes to light, in particular, Leah outlines her own humanity, pointing out areas in her life where she has messed up at the very start of the book, essentially expected to get sued by Scientology. In reading about the processes of other people and herself, there seems to be a strong leaning towards lawsuits by Scientology (which, many are aware of). Leah mostly keeps the story within the framework of her time directly in Scientology, with the final 10% (Kindle version) highlighting her time outside of the church and just how emotionally and socially devastating it was to her initially.Great read. Especially for those who are interested in Scientology. I think that the detail and first person account does a good job of at least tying it down to one person and their personal experiences.

I just finished this and found it to be a good read. I am a New Orleanian who returned within a few weeks after the flood.Rivlin's book pays appropriate attention to the Lakefront and New Orleans East, which were largely ignored by the media at the time, who focused so heavily on the Lower Ninth Ward. It well describes the role of Baton Rouge as a major safe harbor, temporary home, and hub for many of those eager to return. The book brought back many memories of immediate post-Katrina of Orleans: the terrible smell of the air, refrigerators on the street, dishonest contractors, National Guard in the city, and the "Katrina cough" that most of us had. I feel that it also gives an honest discussion of the racial issues and the desire of many whites to use Katrina as an opportunity to downsize the black population of New Orleans. There is a whole more to the book, of course, but these were things that I particularly appreciated about it.

An extremely, well researched book on the many facets, factors and individual response to this great "Natural" and man-made tragedy. In so many ways a Sad, condemning time in the racial history of this country. For black people another reaffirming example for how through the lowest times, still we are able to Rise!! May New Orleans continue to be the unique, wonderfully ethnic diverse place it has always been in this country.

Recently released, Katrina, After the Flood, by NY Times reporter, Gary Rivlin, is a rich and focused look at the efforts to help New Orleans recover and is full of lessons for any one who cares about improving conditions in America's cities. There are some inspiring successes and too many colossal failures in the efforts to bring New Orleans back. There are the depressing and even comical leadership failures of Mayor Nagin and President Bush but even more disturbing is the sheer inability of government bureaucracies to even care about being effective. In the chapter entitled "Eight Feet Across," Rivlin describes how the state of Louisiana hired a consultant to map out how to use HUD funds that had been provided for rebuilding housing. His flow chart laying out the steps required to secure HUD funds was eight feet across. Said an official working on the recovery, "It took us six months just to get two feet." Even in the midst of one of the worst disasters in our lifetime, HUD could not get out of its own way. Many American cities face the same challenges of disinvestment and population loss that devastated New Orleans (although in a more slow burn kind of way) and an effective public sector will be essential to their revitalization. But we are going to need to revitalize or recreate the agencies that are suppose to help.

I loved Katrina: After the Flood. It's a terrific read that walks us through the horror of Katrina from the time when it hit through the rebuilding of New Orleans. The writer, a former colleague of mine at the NYTimes, brings us into vivid conversations and discussions between the New Orleans Mayor, the Louisiana Governor, President Bush and other key officials, as well as the people who were appointed to plan and execute the reconstruction. He describes gripping and heartbreaking scenes during the ordeal, and introduces us to fascinating characters whose lives were upended by the flood. I don't think I understood the magnitude of the devastation, the challenges of rebuilding a ravaged city, or the racial and economic inequities that the hurricane exposed and sharpened until I read this great book. A must read.

Gary Rivlin writes his journalistic account with the readability of a novel. You'll get to know people who created some of the greatest misery in the history of this country, and you might even understand how they came to do it. If you weren't in New Orleans during the hurricane and recovery, you'll be shocked by the stories. And if you ever wondered how the human will can triumph against terrible odds, you might learn something here.

An interesting well written read, however once again the fantastic work of the St. Bernard Project and volunteers who have helped rebuild 100's of homes and lives in and around New Orleans, has been totally overlooked. SBP has been a huge factor in bringing back to life communities not only in St. Bernard Parish, the Lower 9th, New Orleans East, Gentilly ... but now also on a State-wide basis, following other catastrophic natural disasters including both Texas and S. Carolina just this year. It would be interesting to see their efforts mentioned in such detailed reports about Katrina and rebuilding NOLA.

This is a wonderful, in-depth report of what happened in NOLA after the camera crews packed up shortly after Katrina. Along the way, we get to know key people and their impact on the attempted recovery, the efforts to leverage this "opportunity" into a means of reinventing NOLA, and not for the better. The reporting is thorough, the writing is crisp, evocative and empathetic. Anyone with even a slight interest in this recent American tragedy would do well to read Rivlin's book.

This is a book about an important event in history that reads like a novel. Gary Rivlin has found some very interesting characters with different perspectives - from a friend of President Bush's leading the planning after the storm to a radical community organizer working on the ground - and he weaves their stories together to build a really compelling story about what has happened to New Orleans after the storm. Originally sent by the New York Times just after the storm hit, Rivlin apparently found the story hard to leave behind. He follows characters as they initially evacuate New Orleans or stay put to weather out the storm, and then try to navigate the maze of recovery efforts - some working to shape those, some just trying to figure out how to put their lives and neighborhoods back together. A really engrossing read.

After reading Josh Maleran’s "Mad Black Wheel," I found it hard to decide just how I felt about it. Some of the things I really enjoyed about his novel were the characters (especially Phillip and Dr. Szands), the pacing being spot on, and how the structured flowed well even with the time jumps. However, the major hurdle I couldn't find a way to get over was the need to suspend my disbelief. Despite its realistic setting, I couldn't get myself to believe that a) the military would turn to former army musicians with no combat experience to track down and stop a noise that had made their nuclear weapons useless, and b) that the noise was capable of causing a wide raise of effects (which I won't list for the sake of spoilers). It was my inability to suspend my disbelief that turned a great reading experience into an okay one.

Josh Malerman’s Black Mad Wheel is an excellent tale of a 1950s army band recruited to track down a mysterious musical weapon (and its equally mysterious owner) in the South African desert. The title could refer to vinyl records or the spin of reel-to-reel recording decks. It might refer to the tires of an army jeep stuck in the sand, or the ever-turning wheel of history. Or it could refer to life itself, the way we circle back, again and again, to the things that hurt and haunt us. Malerman leaves it open, and Black Mad Wheel is all the better for the ambiguity.Protagonist Phillip Tonka should have listened to his mother when the army requested his band, The Danes, travel to South Africa to investigate a strange and potentially dangerous sound.“Mystery,” she says, “is bad enough on its own. But mystery with the army?” She shakes her head. “Means they’re hiding something.”Indeed, Black Mad Wheel is packed with twists, turns, betrayals, and a few moments of hold-your-breath suspense. This novel is not only set in the 1950s, it has a post-war mood that reverberates throughout the story, including a budding romance between Phillip and his nurse, Ellen.“I’m sorry,” she says. “I suppose we’re all a bit wounded.”They stare at one another, connected by the hospital and more.Perhaps the most interesting twist Malerman presents is that the sound is not a weapon, but the opposite, something capable of stopping the endless cycle of war.While the ending hits a few sour notes, this book is 95% awesome. Malerman strikes a memorable chord in the pantheon of musical fiction with Black Mad Wheel.

I found this a very fascinating and compelling read. I loved the premise and it was such a different take on a story that I was very intrigued. I loved that it was different than so many other stories in structure and feel. This was not one of those books that you know the ending after a third of the way in. The characters were really interesting. Summaries of the plots are in other reviews, so I’ll say that this story made we feel like I was exploring new things, and uncovering some truly interesting ideas. Great stuff.

This story was compelling to me from the first. The relationship between the band brothers, that bond stronger than blood, brought to mind the bonds I myself had with friends in my youth. This is a haunting story of love, and loyalty, and longing. A story of finding a strength and majesty within yourself that you never knew existed. A tale of stepping up to the plate and knocking it out of the park. This writer is uniquely talented and one I will follow in the future. Read his other books, too. They will stay with you as this one will. Maybe forever.

While it was a solid and at times tense read that definitely contains some interesting ideas. However, not to ruin anything, the ending was far too tidy and I would have preferred Malerman to go darker as opposed to weirder. Still one of my favorite emerging horror novelists, and the storyline is still highly original despite a few stumbles.

Malerman's second outing was supposed to be phenomenal. Instead, we are treated with an amalgam of a sound-based horror idea (think Pontypool or King's Cell) mashed with what appears to be childish anti-war cliches. Talk about trashing your good ideas! It would have worked if it was in service of the narrative, but what it does is induce groans and take away whatever mystery and atmosphere that Malerman was working on.But despite that, why the three star rating? Malerman might have botched this one, but I cannot say that he is a bad storyteller; he kept me engaged for the majority of the book. The writing is precise and clear and it does not get in the way of the story. Too bad he had to add a forced message.I hope the next one is better.

The underlying concept, at the end, was difficult to swallow. It felt like the ending was rushed. I was 95% into the book and it wrapped it all up in the last few pages, like he was rushing to finish it for a deadline. How this antagonist came to be and transformed into something supernatural wasn't explained or believable. Solid development of characters, I cared about them, but the rush to resolution and everyone being okay in the end just didn't jive with the rest of the story.

Black Mad Wheel was an awesome read. With an intriguing plot, a dread-filled atmosphere, and lyrical prose, I highly recommend this one for horror and thriller fans. Josh Malerman has quickly become one of my favorite authors.

I've read several hundred books on WW1. I was surprised-- maybe shocked-- by how much "new" stuff I got from this book.Especially when you consider it's not particularly large.For a one-volume "general history" of the ENTIRE war, it contains a remarkable amount of interesting and intriguing facts, mostly put in context with interesting stories.It's a great read, and, if a person wanted to keep JUST ONE book on WW1, this would be my recommendation.

This is, without doubt, the best history book I've ever read, and I've read a lot of them. Meyer has managed to be highly readable and informativeat the same time. I had no insight into WWI at all, and now I'm tempted to re-read this 700 page book immediately because I couldn't put it down the first time. He doesn't just hit the reader with names, places, statistics and endless war logistics and battles. It's all there, but in context, as he intersperses "background" chapters between telling of the progress of the war itself. Please Mr. Meyer, write another book about the time between the two great wars!

This book is part of the pile I’m wading through to research a new story idea. I know I want to set it in England sometime between the end of the first world war and just after the second, but I don’t know exactly when. So, I figured I’d start with the first world war and work my way forward. This book is an excellent overview of the whole thing. The war is such a massive topic that it is almost impossible to cover everything, but this succeeds for the most part. Meyer covers everything in chronological order, so you get a feel for what was happening everywhere at any given time. He also includes small sections of historical background between each chapter the provides valuable insight into things like the history of the Balkans, the Junckers, and the Hohenzollerns. The only area that I thought was a little lacking were details on the war in Italy, but that is a minor quibble. It’s quite long, and really gives you the sense of the kind of meatgrinder the war was. I highly recommend it for anyone new to the topic.

Thinking about the First World War centennial, I picked up “A World Undone,” G. J. Meyer’s fairly recent (2006) and highly detailed account of the conflict. I don’t have the credentials to evaluate the quality of the scholarship, but the lengthy book certainly conveys the scale of the calamity and the scope of the human suffering it caused.And yet the war was almost an accident—petty conflicts and diplomatic miscommunications sparking mechanized slaughter on a scale unforeseen even by the generals and politicians so ineptly managing it. Even more sobering, the 1918 Armistice and subsequent Treaty of Versailles did little more than set the stage for World War II.“A World Undone” conveys all of this with different degrees of success, sometimes overwhelming readers with battlefield strategies and sometimes moving them to feel what modern war was like for soldiers and civilians alike. As it should be, “A World Undone” is profoundly unsettling, maybe especially for readers who think we live in the worst of times today.

Not much new here but a good general overview of WWI. An excellent book on the causes is Clark's "The Sleepwalkers". Meyer overlooks the fact that France had loaned Russia enormous sums prior to the outbreak of war with the particular aim of tying the Russians to France in an alliance against Germany. Meyer's pretty good on the dynamics of Britain's involvement, the Home Rule issue and Grey's essentially duplicitous nature. He's better on Wilson's actions in getting America involved. Simply put, the US had loaned Britain and France so much money by the third year of the war that the Americans couldn't afford to let them lose. The more history I read and the older I get the more I realize that if you can follow the money trail you can generally figure out why things happen. Well written, easy to read. Good introduction for someone new to this subject.

Never before have I read a book with so much information presented in such a logical, easily digestible way. Like many "history buffs" I know plenty about World War II but much less about the war twenty years prior that caused it. This book changed that. What I like most are the background sections on the key players interspersed throughout the book - such a unique but great method to keep the reader learning without bogging down the narrative. If the book started with all of that background, I am sure many readers would get dissuaded from finishing it because it's not quite as interesting as the war itself. Once you're invested in the story of the war, however, the background on the key players is fascinating. Highly recommended.

World War 1 has always held a special fascination for me.for one thing Americans care to know little about it because American troops didn't get into the combat until the last 6 months or so of the war. Also, it was an era before TV and radio. I suspect even Americans living at that time must have understood little about it as well. Yet, it was the conflict that set in motion all the other conflicts of our time. It's causes were more interesting that those of the Second World War. In the latter war, it was an open and shut case of Hitler wanting war at a time when no one else in Europe did. On the contrary, historians of the First World War are not in agreement on its causes or even who or which nation is primarily to blame for it. The battles of the First World War were slaughter fests over blasted, moonscaped earth conjuring up images of Armageddon. GJ Meyer does a terrific job in answering all the big questions and leaves no major topic neglected. Essential reading for everyone wanting to know how the present came to be.

About the Author

Carol Ann Lee collected Anne Frank memorabilia, including first editions of the Diary in any language, from an early age. Although not Jewish, she developed an interest in the Holocaust and identified with Anne Frank. She studied history of art and design at university and then followed her early interest and interviewed Holocaust survivors and worked in the Manchester Jewish Museum. Arrived on time and as advertised.

Bought this book to introduce the story to 8 and 9 year olds. It's not engaging, does not pull you in, while the real story does. It reads like a dry history book. Do not recommend it for a similar purpose.

I am 10 years old and I read this book and I am glad my mom ordered this book for me!

Excellent book. My 11 year old daughter read this for class and loved it.

The book was exactly what I needed. As a teacher of 5th Grade I wanted my class to learn about Anne Frank without making it a chore. Thank you.

This is a great book for kids who are a little young for the actual story written by Anne Frank herself. My daughter is nine and she really liked it. Although it is faithful to the true story it avoids some of the heartwrenching detail that children in the 8-11 age group may not be ready for. We purchased it because my daughter had to read a book about a person who really lived for her reading log. I would have no hesitation in recommending this book.

The story covers Gandhi & Churchill’s early years in India (after Gandhi was born in Gujarat, Churchill had spent about three years in his early twenties with the British Army in Poona, Bangalore and Afghanistan), in England (Gandhi’s studies and New Age friends compared with Churchill’s up and down career), in South Africa (their simultaneous participation in the Boer War) and in India (with the non-violence - and violence that led to Freedom at Midnight). The book is especially significant in describing in footnoted detail the politics within their respective countries through the turbulence of two world wars affecting all of Europe, the Middle East and Asia. This history contains fascinating details, with so many facts I did not know about either man, or how the wider history of various events were tied together during that period.Although this book does not explicitly state Churchill’s hidden “Great Game” strategy for Partition that was revealed in the recent film Viceroy House (to deny the Soviet Union a path to the sea), Arthur Herman does say that Churchill at least in 1946 had established a secret communication channel with Jinnah encouraging a separate Pakistan.The book leaves it to the reader to evaluate the long-term significance of results of Gandhi and Churchill’s actions. Herman concludes with, “Taken together their story is an inspiring tribute to the power of human beings to shape their own destiny, and a warning of the dangers of self-delusion and pride. Most of my history knowledge pertains to European and US history. By interweaving the "modern" history of India with the history of the British Empire, the author gave me familiar information to provide a foothold as I wandered into Indian history. It's a well-written story and accessible.

A very fine dual biography. Those wishing to learn more about the founding of modern India and Pakistan and the withering away of the British Raj are encouraged to buy and read this book.Churchill and Gandhi are giant personalities of the first half of the last century, with their political and moral acts still echoing in today's world. Dr. Herman writes with authority, balance and insight while explaining the motivations of these two inspirational leaders--both having serious flaws and blind spots--who were so at odds for several decades over the future of the British Empire and, more specifically, the fate of its subjects on the subcontinent.

This book reveals the history of Gandhi and Churchill and their unique historical roles without 'taking sides.' There were many competing cultural and political dimensions to these unique men who were at the center of the ferment in their very different planets.

Herman offers impressive but not dry scholarship about these two world figures. He really goes into the historical background and shows how the different early experiences of India (and other areas of the world, like South Africa) shaped the worldviews of both Churchill and Gandhi, and how they would later clash.

A good book about two famous people who lives crossed similar paths and both interesting in their own right.

I never felt I got to know either man personally, just a n historical summation of them . I wanted to know what made them tick...why they made the decisions they did. This was more of a list of what they did
