Rising Road takes one of the first "trials of the century," the murder of a catholic priest in 1920's Birmingham, Alabama, and brings it vividly to life. Like the best works in this nonfiction genre, such as Arc of Justice or Seabiscuit, the author turns what must have been painstaking historical research into a page-turning narrative that places us in the United States of 100 years ago in fully realized detail. What is so wonderful about this book are the combination of a great story--love, race, religion, family conflict--with celebrity added in (future Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black has a prominent part) together with fascinating social history and, to top it off, an "inside look" at a criminal case from the expert perspective of a law professor and former prosecutor. I learned a great deal from this book while enjoying it like a novel. Although there are very few living souls who can remember the events recounted in Rising Road (and one suspects Davies must have tracked them down and interviewed them), very few readers of this book will ever forget them. I know I wont. Highly recommended.

This book may be one of the most important published this year.The murder of Fr. James Coyle, a Roman Catholic priest, at the hands of a Methodist minister and Klu Klux Klan member Rev. Edwin Stevenson made for one of the most sensational trials of the last century. The murder took place in 1921.Rev. Stevenson shot Fr. Coyle in cold blood because Coyle's daughter had converted to Catholicism and had married a dark skinned Puerto Rican in the Church. The murder was a pure act of hatred and malice.And Stevenson was acquitted of the crime. The judge, several members of the Jury, and the defense attorneys were all current (or future) members of the Klu Klux Clan.The Rev. Stevenson was represented by Hugo Black, when Black was a young attorney. Black was a Freemason, and later a member of the Klan. I must note that his eventual career as a Supreme Court Justice is filled with many many accomplishments. I have reviewed his decisions and find him absolutely prescient. I think his constant stand for civil rights is to be admired, as is his brave dissent on Griswold vs. Connecticut, which is a case that set the precedent for one of the worse cases in Court history.But this brave career in defense of the Constitution, civil rights, and school desegregation was decades in the future when he took the Rev. Stevenson as a client.His defense of Stevenson was very aggressive, and played to the prejudices of the jurors.Fr. James Coyle by contrast was a Knight of Columbus and a chaplain for his local Knights council. He was an ardent defender of the faith, and a very brave man. For a Catholic priest in Birmingham Alabama early in the last century, the dangers were many. But Coyle was from a line of freedom fighters in Ireland, and was not the type of person to hide from the likes of the Klu Klux Klan. Every evening he would sit on his rectory's front porch and do his work there in the open air. If those who wanted him dead wanted to, they always knew where to find him.I too am a Knight, and I find great solace in reading about this member of the order. There are many parallels between Fr. Coyle's self-sacrificial life of service, and the life of service of the founder of our Order, the Venerable Fr. Michael J, McGiveny. Parish Priest: Father Michael McGivney and American Catholicism It is nice to see good historians write excellent books about these men, especially today. There are many priests out there in the mold of Coyle and McGiveny, but it seems we never hear about them. Seeing books like this published is as heartening as it is appreciated.I know nothing of Professor Davies background. I know only what I know from the book, and her faculty page at her University.She is a criminal lawyer and an expert in criminal law. The majority of this book is written about the trial of Rev. Stevenson and, as person who is a professor in the area at one of our nations finest law schools, Professor Davies does not disappoint. Her recreation of the case is simply magnificent.This did not surprise me.What DID surprise me was how well she told the story of the Catholic Church in Birmingham, right down to the liturgy. I do not know if Davies is Catholic. As a very knowledgeable (and somewhat traditional) Catholic what I can say is that this woman took the time to get it RIGHT. I had the sense I was reading a book written by a fine Church historian before the story of the trial began, and the sense I was reading a book by fine trial lawyer when the story of the case began. That is a degree of cross-competence that is very rare, especially these days. A liberal education is in many places a dead thing, a relic of the past. Professor Davies possess one. That is very clear.This is an excellent book. Not only does it tell the story of a brave man and good and holy priest, it tells the story of a riveting murder case, and most importantly, paints a very good and authentic picture of American anti-Catholicism on the part of some evangelical Christians. This is a legacy that has not entirely gone away, as books such as A Woman Rides the Beast: The Roman Catholic Church and the Last Days and The Gospel According to Rome clearly show. The at times murderous legacy of such hatred and bigotry should serve as a warning to us all to keep God's love and mercy foremost in our minds and hearts when dealing with people different than ourselves.

Sharon Davies, who is a Law Professor at Ohio State University, wrote an excellent book about predjudice, bigotry, and stupidty. The book titled RISING ROAD is a thorough yet depressing book about ignorance and injustice in "the land of the free." To state that Sharon Davies "did her homework" is an understatement.The early 20th. century was a time of unreasonable hatred toward Catholicism and Catholics. Many state authorities had carte blanche unconstitutional power to make unannounced investigations of monastaries and convents in violation of Fourth Amendment Rights. Political candidates were elected based on virulent anti-Cathlocism. Wild stories were published about Catholic clergy conspiring with the Pope to store weapons and take control of the US Government. What is sad is that many Americans believed this nonsense without a shred of evidence.Davies did a good job explaining the economic and political conditions in Birmingham, Alabama. Sly land investors were aware of iron ore and coal deposits in the Birmingham area and knew that the booming US steel industry would make this area a lucrative site for land speculation and investments. The blacks saw the prospect of industrial jobs as an escape from agricultural work only to be disappointed at the long hours, low wages, and poor living quarters.In the midst of the economic and political environment, Catholics were marginalized. Father Coyle had serious disputes with klansmen and anti-Catholic bigots whom he successfully debated in newspaper articles. Father Coyle's Bishop was concerned with Father Coyle's safety, and, as events unfolded, this fear was well founded.With this background, Sharon Davies wrote a detailed account of the murder of Father Coyle by a Rev. Stephenson because Stephonson's daughter converted to Catholicism and married a Catholic man in spite of brutality and threats to her life as well as threatened placement in a primitative asylum. Even though Father Coyle talked to Ruth Stephenson when she was 12, there was no attempt to convert her. Six years later she was received into the Catholic Church for which Rev. Stephenson murdered Father Coyle who was not the priest who received her. Rev. Stephenson had an unsavory reputation among fellow Metholidist clergy because of his own caper of trolling the local courthouse to perform marriages.Readers must realize that when Rev. Stephenson murdered Father Coyle, torture was considered normal procedure in extracting confessions until 1936 when the US Supreme Court Justices correctly ruled that confessions extracted by torture were in violation of Eighth Amendment Rights and were unconstitional (MISSIPPI VS. BROWN). Rev. Stephenson was never subjected to such duress although black suspects were. The Jefferson County Coroner finally concluded in his inquest that the murder of Father Coyle was premeditated murder resulting in a grand jury hearing.Prior to the grand jury hearing, Sharon Davies gave a detailed account of conflict of between the prosecutor and Hugo Black who was the lead attorney of for Rev. Stephenson. Readers may know that later Hugo Black was confirmed as a US Supreme Court Justice. The lead prosecutor was Joe Tate whose politcal disputes with Hugo Black were well known in Jefferson County,Alabama. Such details gave the book an interesting background.Once the grand jury returned a true bill of indictment for second degree murder, the trial showed racism and bigotry as major factors. Ruth Stephenson's husband, Pedro Gussman was registered as white. He was not segregated as black. Yet, he may have been surprised that during the trial he became black because of his Hispanic ancestry and his place of birth in Puerto Rico. Hugo Black asked how Pedro Gussman knew his parents were Spaniards to which Gussman responded simply that his parents told him so.Hugo Black and his defense team tried to impugn Ruth Stephenon's testimony. They carefully avoided any references of her being beaten and mistreated because of her familiarity with Catholicism. When Hugo Black tried to make a case that Ruth Stephenson was coerced or lured into the Catholic Faith, she refuted such nonsense by claiming that she made the decision of her own accord without any prompting by Catholic priests. Hugo Black also used the self-defense arguement and temporary insanity defense. Davies made a good point that there were no powder burns on Father Coyle refuting any claim of a fight or self defense. Witness testimony confirmed there was no physical altercation between Rev. Stephenson and Father Coyle.The trial ended in an aquittal of Rev. Stephonson. Ruth and Pedro Gussman were divorced. Pedro was killed by a hit-and-run driver in 1931 who was never apprehended. Ruth died from tuberculoses. The events were an American tragedy. Sharon Davies deserves high praise for meticulous research, good written expression, and a good history. I just finished reading this book. It is a history of the murder of Father Coyle at the parish rectory, and subsequent trial of the perpetrator in Birmingham, Alabama in 1921. It was one of those books you had trouble putting down, I would remain an extra hour at home to finish a few more chapters.It is a vignette of Birmingham's early history, Jim Crow, the Klan, and the forces that impacted the trial and citizens. Although this is a history book, it is easy reading.You do not have to be from Birmingham or Alabama to enjoy this book.Enjoy

I've really enjoyed the Ghibli "Art of..." books published by Viz. I'm a cartoonist and I keep the books near my work area for quick reference. The Art of the Wind Rises is no exception, I'm glad to have it on my shelf. However, I found it lacking when compared to the others, especially the Art of Ponyo. To me the Ponyo book really set a high standard with a good balance of storyboards, preliminary work, backgrounds, composite images from the film and interviews. This book doesn't manage to find that kind of balance.First of all there are almost no storyboards, in fact I only saw one page of five storyboard drawings which is used twice, and it feels like far fewer concept sketches than previous books. For me getting to see the preliminary work is the attraction of these books, not final images from the movie. Also, some key scenes from the movie, most notably the outstanding earthquake scene, feel like they barely made it into the book. The actual earthquake only gets five images on a two page spread including one (very beautiful) background painting and four final images from the movie. The post earthquake chaos however gets several pages which is nice since there are so many great crowd shots. Maybe the lack of balance is due to the massive amount of content they had to cover? Maybe there are so few storyboards to encourage people to buy the storyboard book?With all that said, this is a big book with a lot of content. There are interviews with Yoji Takeshige, Kitaro Kosaka, Michiyo Yasuda, Atsushi Okui, Miyazaki's original project proposal, a short biography of Jiro Horikoshi and Tatsuo Hori ( Jiro in the movie is a composite of these two men) and the entire script translated from Japanese. Although the preliminary work is few and far between what is included is pretty good, including some of Miyazaki's airplane drawings. There's also an overview of the digital and photographic effects used in the movie...if you're into that kind of thing.Overall this book is an unbalanced but nice addition to the to the series.*Update - After reading the interviews I learned that Miyazaki actually only made a handful of concept drawings before they started production which explains why there aren't many in the book.*

This is another great piece in Hayao Miyazaki's collection. It is beautifully done as all the others. It has pre sketches of all/ most of the characters, it has a lot of scene pictures that have been watercolored. And a script in the back. The layout is basically like all of his other artbooks. If you loved the movie then you'll love this book!

Since Miyazaki's movies are all animated by hand instead of using CGI, the books that they produce really show you a lot about the thought, design, and creation processes of his movies.Since this is supposed to be the last movie that Hayao is supposed to be involved in the full creation, I wanted the book as both an information piece and also as a milestone marker of his work.All in all - an excellent book.

As an animator who is fascinated by Miyazaki's work and already owns two other "The Art Of" books from this series, The Art of the wind Rises doesn't fail to bring the amazing concept art, finished cel art, and detail about how the movie was made, right into my hands so I can study it and learn how to better improve my own animation. I've followed Mr. Miyazaki's career for the last couple decades. My first memory of his work was in 1991 when I saw "Laputa" - a.k.a. Castel in the Sky - for the first time. I was hooked from then on....The art of The Wind Rises captures pure human emotions, and visually depicts period costume and manners. Only Haiyo could explore the beginnings of flight in Japan and simply in visual representation, communicate the contrasts of mankind's quest for knowledge through curiosity and our thirst for power and bloodshed. This book has all the power and glory that Haiyo's art is known for. I recommend for everyone to get a copy of their own.

I have read all the Joshua Series and still feel the 1st one was the best. Actually, this latest book was my least favorite. It did make me question the government wisdom and the paranoid fear generated by how people in general profile others because of religion and terrorist acts. Even though this is fiction, IT seems to me that the author profiles CIA mentality which is what the message it trying to get people to stop doing. Author Grizone seems to spend a lot of text with unnecessary discription, almost as if he were trying to fill up pages. This issue didn't keep me anxiously waiting Joshua's next move but rather had me waiting to move on to the next stage of the plot. If this was the 1st of a "Joshua" series, I believe that Mr Grizone would not have had the following he has today.Since I enjoyed the others, if he wrote another in the series I would probably read it. I guess it's kind of like Microsoft...just because they came up with really bad operating systems like ME and Vista, that doesn't mean that I am going to give up on the computer. Good Luck to Josephe Grizone.

I thoroughly enjoyed the content and message of this book. If all people could be open to peace and respect for others, our world would be a much better place for all of us!

It was a story for our time and was relevant even the few years after it was first written, I found it profound and yet a great story. I would recommend it for readers of all types.

Have not read it yet ... not sure of violence or sexual content but Joseph Girzone is a pastor so I doubt that it would include this content..... if it is good as the others it will be a 4 or 5 star rating

I am a huge fan of Author Jana Deleon's cozy mysteries. This one was no exception. Sabine's character was introduced in book one of this series and I liked her immensely. In this story, things take a turn for the worst for Sabine's character and even though she had failed to find any family members over the past decade, she really needs to now. Sabine has had health scares in the past but now she find that she is not facing a scare but the real thing and she needs to find someone who is a genetic match for her.In an effort to find someone that is a blood relative Sabine takes the advice of psychic Raissa Bordeaux and hires a private investigator. Beau Villeneuve works as a PI but he was once a federal officer whose expertise was finding people who were lost. When he meets Sabine he is immediately attracted to her, which terrifies him. Beau has a policy against relationships, especially if the woman is a client. Determined to keep things professional he attempts to keep his distance from Sabine but as she seems to be a target of someone determined to end her life, Beau can't help but look out for Sabine and risk losing his heart in the process.With the help of the once most hate woman in all of Mudbug, now turned spunky and helpful, if not a pain in the rear, ghost Helena, Sabine and Beau will have to unravel the mystery that is Sabine's origins. Not everything is what it seems and the truth's that are revealed will rock Sabine to the core. As time runs out, the danger increases and Sabine will be faced with truths almost too horrible to comprehend and some truths that are more than she could have ever hoped for.This was such a fun story to read! As always there is quite a bit of humor, sass, and snark that is the perfect blend with a slightly suspenseful and romantic cozy mystery. I do feel that certain elements were introduced and not fully realized or carried through the storyline when they should have been. I also think that although the romance was sweet, there was nothing intense about it that would make the characters be so "hot" for each other. It felt almost like a forced happily ever after just to give the readers what they wanted. Overall though, I enjoyed this story and I will continue with this series.

I love how Jana DeLeon weaves these stories and especially so when she has a series with 8 books; followed by another series with 6. Each focuses on a different character and yet she manages to weave characters into her stories from another series and even brings them into the plot when you think you have it figured out. I am always ready for another book and don't want to put them down. They are intriguing, fun and very expressive of the characters. These are all strong, independent women, and she brings in a handsome, sexy man; but not enough that it becomes the of focus of her stories.I love stores set in Louisiana bayou country...that alone lets the reader know it will be suspenseful. I hope she continues writing. Didn't think I would enjoy the Ghost-in-Law series, but I do indeed.

Best selling author Janet DeLeon sure knows how to please her readers. Her stories are very well written and are very entertaining. Helena Henry is the ghost mother-in-law from the first book in this series. Sabine LaVeche needs to locate a blood relative fast --- her life depends on it. Helena comes to her aid, as well as private investigator Beau Velleneuve. The author is great at weaving humor and suspense together; oh, and also a little spice of romance. I love this story, you will, too!!

These books were a delightful find! They are funny, light-hearted, romantic (but not overly so), and fun books. I am glad that this book focused on Sabine instead of Maryse as the characters continue to develop. Helena (the Ghost-in-Law) is hilarious and reminds me of a grumpy Lula from the Stephanie Plum series. The mysteries are okay, but not really the highlight of the books for me.

This is a good sequel in a good series of books. Much like my favorite movie sequels as opposed to non-favorites was that it felt enough like it's own story and not just a slightly different version of the first. This book focuses on Sabine who ends up getting some bad news of her health. Since a bone marrow transplant is a possible outcome at some point it would be in her best interest to try and track down some blood relatives. It turns out that she's actually a blood relative to her friend Maryse ex Hank. She also starts to develop an attraction for Beau the private investigator she's hired, who not knowing why she's trying to find relatives wonders why she's working so hard to find them. It turns out he has had an experience from his past that went horribly wrong and wants to spare her facing a similar experience. Helena, Maryse dead mother-in-law continues to make appearances as Sabine is now able to hear her and even sees her a couple times. Helena continues to wear outrageous outfits(including a nun's habit) that both Sabine and Maryse probably wish they wash out their eyes and forget seeing. Also in the book Helena does an extremely large amount of eating which is a bit odd considering she's dead, but on the bright side for her she can eat without gaining weight. Not on the bright side, feeding a ghost is not cheap to either Maryse or Sabine.Not much is written about Helena herself and the mystery about her death other then what is contained in an autopsy report so if you are looking to find out what happened to her it's not going to be solved in this book. But the private investigator is able to track down some of Sabine's relatives for her and she is indeed related to that family. Now she has a few life and death situations herself in the course of the book. Is she the target of someone's foul play or is someone else the target this time? And what happens with the attraction between Beau and Sabine. Read this very well written sequel in the Mudbug Series and find out.

My 7 months old daughter love it (so I love it too).Big images and the sounds are pretty good.I'll definitely recommend it.

Nice pictures but no sounds. Opened the battery compartment with much trouble (took forever to unscrew the tiny screw holing the lid closed) and found corroded batteries. Bought new batteries on Amazon and installed them. Took forever to screw the lid closed again. Should have tested the sounds before closing the compartment. Again, no sound. Was finally able to get the battery compartment opened again and inspected the compartment more closely. Found a tiny spot that needed to be cleaned of battery corrosion. Then replaced the new batteries with three other new batteries. The sounds worked. It does take a strong finger to push the sound buttons; a child wouldn't be able to do it. Screwed the compartment lid back on with much trouble. The tiny screw holding the cover in place had broken, but luckily, there was enough of the screw left to tighten the lid sufficiently. I've never had such a time replacing batteries. After all this trouble, I sure hope my toddlers enjoy this book.

My 16-month-old daughter loves this book. She used it so much we had to get another one (she took it everywhere with it and was very tough on it). It is kind of tough to press some of the buttons, so she needs our help. That's why I took off one star. But great book for teaching animal sounds and it's fun and interactive without being too loud. Also, it doesn't play any music or make unnecessary noise.

The back of the book says it's for ages 3 & up, but my 8-month old absolutely loves this book already. I like how the pictures aren't cartoonish drawings, but real pictures of animals, and the sounds are life-like. Yet, the book is still really cute and fun! The textures of each animal are all nice and different from each other too. The cow has soft black fur that you push to hear it "Mooooooo," the lamb has a wooly coat that you push to hear it "Baaaaaa," etc. We also have the "Noisy Trucks" version of these books and love that one too! These are books that my baby will enjoy for years, and they're educational as well. I just wish they made more of these types of books.

This book has the following farm animals with textures and their sounds: cow, rooster, pig, lamb, horse. My one-year-old loves to touch the animals and hear their sounds over and over, the rooster is particularly hard to push to make the sound so I have to push it for him though. The book is cute but it arrived damaged. The front cover is torn down the seam. I'm not sure if this is why the price was discounted so deeply but if that is why, we should be made aware the price is a clearance price due to damage to item. Had I bought for a gift I wouldn't be giving it

This book is pretty cute. It makes 5-6 animal noises and has photos of different farm animals. My 6 month old seems to like it but the "touch and feel" areas are aren't huge and she has a hard time touching and feeling. The sound buttons are under the textures and are very small so she definitely can't do those on her own at all. She does enjoy it when I help her though.

Received this today for my littlest granddaughter. Does NOT work! I am so disappointed! Going to try to find some new batteries for it. One of the cell batteries is corroded! If new batteries don’t work, it’s going back! I shouldn’t have to replace these batteries before I can use it!!

About the Author

Dr. Eeva Tuppurainen is an independent veterinary expert for lumpy skin disease (LSD), sheeppox (SPP) and goatpox (GTP). For more than a decade, she headed a UK based the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) reference laboratory for LSD, SPP and GTP. Her responsibilities included provision of diagnostic services, technical assistance and training on capripoxviruses (CaPV) for the OIE Member States. In this role, she was responsible for implementing various research projects on the CaPV field. During the recent LSD outbreaks in Europe and the northern Caucasus, she has served as a team leader for several European Union (EU) Community Veterinary Emergency Team (CVET) missions, followed by a series of sustained technical assistance missions to the LSD affected and at-risk Balkan countries under the framework of the EU Better Training Safer Food-initiative. In early 2017 she contributed as a short term external consultant for FAO LSD projects, providing disease expertise in designing effective disease control and eradication measures, preparing training courses, awareness material, LSD Field Manual and a contingency plan template.  Currently, she is engaged as a Senior Animal Health Expert, in an EU funded project in the northern part of Cyprus.  Dr. Shawn Babiuk received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Saskatchewan in 1997 and a Doctorate in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Saskatchewan in 2003. He completed postdoctoral training in Saskatoon on genomics with Pyxis Genomics Canada and on vaccine development at Vaccine & Infectious Disease Organization, University of Saskatchewan. In 2005, he moved to the National Centre for Foreign Animal Disease in Winnipeg as a research scientist for the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. In 2006, he became an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Immunology at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Babiuk’s research is focused on foreign animal disease. His research interests consist of understanding the pathogenesis as well as developing diagnostics and vaccines for several foreign animal diseases such as capripox, peste des petits ruminants, African swine fever as well as newly emerging zoonotic diseases such as influenza and Rift Valley fever.Dr. Eyal Klement is an associate professor of veterinary epidemiology in the Koret School of Veterinary Medicine in the Hebrew Universtiy. He graduated DVM studies in the Hebrew University and completed a Master degree in epidemiology at the Tel-Aviv University in Israel. His main research interest is aimed at the epidemiology of infectious diseases in animals and humans and vaccine evaluation. He is the head founder of the Veterinary Master of Public Health program at the Hebrew University.  Eyal is a consultant of EFSA and the EUFMD on several topics such as the risk of vector-borne disease introduction to Europe, Lumpy skin disease and evaluation of FMD vaccine effectiveness. He is also an associate editor of Frontiers in Veterinary Science, section Veterinary Epidemiology, and Economics.
