Eduardo L. Bunge, PhD, is Professor in the Clinical Psychology PhD Program and Associate Director of the Institute for International Internet Interventions for Health at Palo Alto University in California. He is also Codirector of the Fundación Equipo de Terapia Cognitiva Infantojuvenil (Fundación ETCI), a CBT clinic for children and adolescents in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Javier Mandil, Lic, is Codirector of the Fundación ETCI. He is also Professor of Child and Adolescent Clinical Psychology and Family Systems Therapy at Favaloro University and a guest lecturer at the Foro Foundation, the College of Psychologists of Buenos Aires, and the University of Flores, Argentina. Andrés J. Consoli, PhD, is Associate Professor in the Department of Counseling, Clinical, and School Psychology at the Gevirtz Graduate School of Education, University of California, Santa Barbara. Using this in a support & education group for teenage girls. I like it a lot, and they are responding well to the information.

I've found it helpful with both boys and girls ages 8-14; all seem to enjoy doing CBT with this book.

This book serves as such a wonderful resource for child and adolescent clinicians. It relays cognitive-behavioral theory and technique in clear, palatable ways and provides the therapist with strategies that are easily translated for parents and caregivers. As an early-career clinician, this has become my go-to resource when I am looking for information and/or specific interventions to use with my clients. Moreover, the design of the book is adorable and the general setup is intuitively easy to navigate. I am so grateful for this resource and will certainly be recommending it to colleagues and students!

There’s some good content in this book but I am not a fan of worksheets because kids don’t engage. This is one of my favorite books. It is about a witch who turns a mother's children into food while they are out. The mother must know what child is what food in order to turn them back. It's not scary....more magical. Audrey Wood is such a wonderful writer. Don Wood writes similar books. They are so vidid that they almost look real. I loved this book and it will be a treasure to save forever. My children now in their 30's are reading it to their young children. It does not have to be a Halloween book. I would suggest 3 years and up.

Okay- so I was nervous about buying this book for my 3 year old because of the reviews that said the book is scary. It is not. Lol not in my opinion and not in my toddlers opinion either. This book is a fairy tale, super fun, sort of dark, easy and fun to read (and my son loves my heckedy peg voice) and it has amazing illustrations. Very beautiful. My son frequently walks around the house now saying "come on sweet chickens!" Haha which is a phrase heckedy peg says. After Christmas we read this every night for at least a month. Great book! Such a relief from the old happy go lucky standard toddler rhyming books. Blah I get tired of those- but this I could read over and over. I was so happy my son loves it, and I really don't think it's as "dark" as everyone makes it out to be- great buy!

AMAZING book! I only remember a handful of books from my childhood and this is one of them. The children are named after the days of the week (kids get practice hearing them, older children can predict what the rest of the children are named). Spoiler alert- the witch turns them into different foods and the mom has to correctlyguess which one is each child. Easy to make interactive with a child and have them help guess which food is which child.The illustrations are so beautiful and moving! Each one is a work of art. You can read it multiple times and still discover new details in the artwork.A few people said their book arrived damaged. Mine arrived in perfect condition. No issues for me!Love it!

This was one of my favorite books when I was a very young girl, to this day it is still one of my favorites. I bought this so I could pass it on to my kids. I adore the determination of a mothers love to get her kids back from the wicked witch. The paintings in this book was one of the main reasons why I have an extreme love for oil based paintings. I also bought the book "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub" the same time and it is just as amazing as Heckedy Peg. I just wish I could of bought Heckedy Peg in Hardcopy as I did with "King Bidgood's in the Bathtub." I bought the book in paperback and sadly it looked used and not brand new. I had to take a star off because of that but other than that the book itself is just wonderful.

I loved this book as a child and once i had my own - it was a must purchase. I realized that once I ordered, I still had my copy but I'm grateful to have two copies. The story is about love of a mother and knowing her children. It's fun and not scary and I just love it. It's a classic in my home.

Loved this book as a child, bought it here to share with my 6 year old son and his entire kindergarten class. He (and they) were just as enchanted as I remember being, and afterward, all enjoyed imitating Heckedy Peg's voice and hobbling around on their "peg" legs.

The story is great, but my copy is falling apart at the seams, has rips, places are taped, and there is writing throughout. How they thought this was in sellable condition, I will never know. Love the story, but my copy is a joke.

This book was purchased for a grandchild and was a book I had purchased and read to my children when they were young. I bought the book origionally for the beautiful illustrations; but it is also a very good fairy tale. The mother in the story knows and loves her children and is able at the end of the story to turn everything about because she knows them so well. My youngest daughter, who has two children of her own said that this was a book that I should make sure each of my married adult children had for their children. So I will need to purchase two more before the year is out. This was a much loved book when ours were young and for the grandchildren that have it it is proving to be special for them too.

Tonight, down here in the valley,I'm lonesome and oh, how I feel,As I sit here alone in my cabin,I can see a mansion on the hill.Hank Williams,"A Mansion on the Hill"I spent my high school summers working in the kitchen of a camp in the Poconos. It was dirty work but a great paying gig at sixty dollars a week. Of course, there wasn't a hell of a lot to do at night and that was a problem: What's the good of being sixteen and on your own if you can't go completely insane?Sometimes we'd borrow a car and drive to New York, where the drinking age was still eighteen and we stood a better chance of getting served. But usually we'd just sit around the dilapidated shack we lived in behind the kitchen, getting loaded on whatever we could lay our hands on and listening to records. Among eight guys there were four stereos and over two thousand albums in that bunk: the bare necessities required for two months away from civilization. Music -- rock and roll -- was far and away the most discussed topic. (Girls and drugs were tied for second.)As great as the music was, the ongoing conversation was really about something more than solos and songs. Listening to rock and roll was learning a secret language. There was something conveyed by the attitude of the bands and their records that stood apart from the music, and the way you spoke that language told people how you felt about the world. When you first met someone, the conversation turned immediately to music because once you knew which bands a person listened to, you knew if you were going to get along.It was a lot like administering a psychological test. First you'd check to see if the basic language was there -- the Beatles, the Stones, and the British Invasion bands; Motown and Stax; the San Francisco groups; Dylan. After that, you'd probe special interests for signs of sophistication or character flaws. For instance, a passion for a perfectly acceptable but lightweight group like Steppenwolf showed a certain genial rebelliousness but suggested a lack of depth; a girl who listened to a lot of Joni Mitchell could probably be talked into bed but you might regret it later; a single-minded focus on the Grateful Dead and the New Riders of the Purple Sage was a sure sign of a heavy dope smoker; anyone with a record collection that traced the blues further back than John Mayall and the Yardbirds was an intellectual. It was, I recall, a remarkably accurate system.Nearly twenty-five years later, after spending much of that time as a music business reporter, I'm not sure that secret language still exists. The question -- at least to someone my age -- is no longer "Will rock and roll change the world?" but "How did the world change rock and roll?"Rock went through a dramatic transformation in the mid-sixties. The folk-rock movement brought a new artistic, social, and political intention to the music that early rockers did not have. Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis -- all were extraordinary and inventive performers, but they aspired to show business careers, not to creating lasting art. The same is true of the early Beatles, and it was folk artists -- and Bob Dylan in particular -- who changed the music's parameters and aspirations to include a quest for legitimacy, values, and authenticity -- specifically an interest in populist folk forms and populist politics of the left. Folk was entertainment, but there was a real and right way to play it. "It was musicology," Peter Wolf of the J. Geils Band remarked to me in recalling the spirit that infused the coffeehouse scene. That distinction set folk apart from what many of its fans viewed dimly as the junk culture entertainment that post-World War II consumer society produced solely for the sake of being sold. Considering the increasing rejection of those values in the early sixties, it's not surprising that folk found a new resonance, especially on college campuses, that led to the "folk boom" of that period. When Dylan and others created folk-rock, those aspirations were transferred to electric music, and the results proved far more popular and profound for the mass culture than folk had ever been. The most influential rock albums of the later part of the sixties were made by people who took themselves quite seriously -- as did their listeners.        Just a few decades ago rock was tied to a counterculture professing to be so firmly against commercial and social conventions that the notion of a "rock and roll business" seemed an oxymoron. In 1962, the year before the Beatles' debut, the $500 million record business shunned rock music -- "It smells but it sells" was the guilty refrain of those who stooped to recording and releasing rock records. With the rise of the popular rock culture in the sixties, as rock albums supplanted films and books as the most influential popular art form for young people, the mainstream entertainment industry embraced the music. At the better-run companies, the fiscal results were astounding: although largely unnoticed, the twenty-two-year history of Steve Ross's Warner Communications, Inc., reveals that the record operation was the firm's biggest, most dependable financial engine; the corporation widely considered the preeminent American media conglomerate of the age was literally fueled by rock and roll.The entertainment industry has done more than survive its head-on collision with rock's antithetical culture -- it has thrived. This year, largely on the strength of rock, the worldwide record industry will gross over $20 billion, and global media and technology giants like Time Warner, Sony, Bertelsmann, Philips Electronics, and Thorn-EMI will view rock bands as key assets. How did this happen? And what does it mean that bands accept it?Seriousness and artistic intent were a key part of the growing appeal of the subsequent "underground" rock scene. But the success of that scene also revolutionized the music business. It's easy to forget that in the early sixties the sound track to West Side Story was the number one album in Billboard for fifty-four weeks -- and that for certain rock stars today its sales figure would be considered disappointing. That commercial revolution had a huge and not necessarily positive effect on rock music. It bred financial opportunities for artists and a certain professionalism that has proven to be at odds with a quest for authenticity. I have nothing against commercial success, it's just not an artistic goal in and of itself. What I find most troubling is that the scope and reach of the business often make it impossible to tell what is done for art and what is done for commerce -- which calls into question the music's current ability to convey the artistic intent that made it so appealing and different to begin with. And, if the acquisition of wealth and influence is rock's ultimate meaning, then the most meaningful figure it has produced is the billionaire mogul David Geffen. Indeed, it's more than ironic that Geffen's appreciation of the dollars-and-cents value of the music has placed him in a position to exert a greater influence and power over society and politics than the artists -- it may be the measure of a profound failure by the musicians and their fans. Geffen is a visionary businessman and a generous philanthropist, but I never sat around the shack behind the kitchen when I was sixteen trying to divine the secret language of business, and I don't know anyone else who did. I wasn't looking for the mansion on the hill, and I didn't think rock and roll was, either.

Neil Young and Rick James used to be in a band together. Neil Young is color blind and epileptic. The Eagles carved their career specifically to be rich and successful. Bruce Springsteen isn't the brightest of bulbs. As a breed, record label owners and musicians' personal managers are giant tools. David Geffen got super-rich mostly due to good timing. Much of the what we know as the music industry was formed by individuals who aspired to be rich and influential power players, not by the development or nurturing of good music or musicians. The success of Bruce Springsteen's "Born in the USA" album was preordained and the product of a marketing juggernaut. Jon Landau was never a good record producer but that didn't stop him from doing it anyway.There -- that's a gross oversimplification of "Mansion on the Hill", with a couple of fun facts tossed in.I've been reading quite a few books lately on the record business and the movie business (emphasis on the word "business"). "Mansion on the Hill" is one of the better ones I've read, but its impact on me was sort of like learning as a kid that there was no Santa Claus. There is often an ugly and depressing truth under any facade of glitz and glamour, and MOTH peels back each layer to show you the behind-the-scenes players, the histories, the pettiness, and the ugly manipulation.What little respect you may still have for the music business will be whittled down to next to nothing before you are finished with this book.It's a fascinating read nonetheless.Good companion books to read with this one include "Hit Men" (published 7 years before this one but might be better if read after this one) and "Appetite for Self-Destruction: The Spectacular Crash of the Record Business in the Digital Age" (to be read after MOTH).The music business is steadily being eroded from the inside. It's almost over, folks. Music has now officially become "product" (and that's not really news). And if you watch "American Idol" and buy those contestants' records, you are probably part of the problem.I feel bad for young kids today who grow up thinking that the new junk they hear on the radio today is good music. They're just too young to know how deluded they really are -- or how much they've been robbed.

Most underated book about rock history. This guy tells it like it really happened. Prepare to have your little rock heroes bashed around a bit, possibly. No punches pulled, the real story is told here, filling in the blanks to the history of rock. This will really help you understand why you were listening to that lamo junk music on the radio when Led Zeppelin II was collecting dust!

Interesting look at the music and radio businesses at one point in time. The appeal of the book is primarily with anyone who grew up with Boston radio in the '60's and early '70's but is an enjoyable read for anyone else.

THis books seems to be a great footage of rock articles. IT presents no definitive theory about the rock industry, nor it gives a real portrait of the rock scenario through the years. It only gives separeted pieces of histories about Springsteen, Buffalo Springfield, Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Peter Frampton, Grateful Dead, MC-5 and a handful of others. The writing style is dry and badly developed. DOn't recommended.

I read it while I was on my trip to Germany. The author gives quite a few comparisons to the artist and business, and how it all fits within the spectrum of leadership.

This book contains inspiration and encouragement for everyone as they confront the creative act of imagining new steps in life. Beautifully written and compassionate.

I loved this book. The author talks about creating spiritual space in our overscheduled lives for creativity to visit and thrive. She uses the analogy of putting down a picnic blanket on the lawn at an open air concert to reserve our space. Picnic blanket as studio space. I love that my daydreaming is validated! The many real life examples she notes are inspirations to those who doubt they are creative. We all have creativity and Amy Whitaker's book will encourage you to see your own.

Amy Whitaker could make the owners manual of your car worth reading: that is how gifted a writter she is. A light touch alternating between joyous and profound, interspersed with great stories about very special people who can serve as role models. Bursting at the seams with content gathered from every vantage point. The only recommendation i would make is to read it with a journal and pen handy because there is so much wisdom and insight, you will want to collect your favorites and distill them into a roadmap for your future endeavors.Incidentally, Mat whoever you are, read the overwhelmingly positive reviews other than yours and rest assured that you need to devote more energy to discernment: you have a great snarky sense of humor but it is wildly misplaced on this one.

My mother was an artist. But she struggled, as so many do, to weave the essence of her art into her life. And what she knew through what she made could've helped my father, the banker, live a richer, more whole life. If only she could've expressed it in terms he could've understood. This book would've helped.

She does it well here in service of helping anyone find the time, community, and resources for pursuing there creative pursuits. For several summers I carried the first edition (1973) of the Sierra Club Totebook - Hiking the Teton Backcountry. Long ago I misplaced my guidebook, but recently I found a copy at a local library book sale.Pocket size, low weight, and durability were its key attributes. The trail descriptions were perhaps too concise, but overall it was a useful guide in the 1970s. Today, this out-of-date, little 160-page book is amusing, and may appeal to collectors.The sections on hiking gear, food, and trail safety illustrate how much has changed. We are advised that a canteen is not essential as running water is plentiful; no mention is made of treating, filtering, or boiling stream and lake water. Terry stitched socks, either cotton or synthetic fibers, are considered more comfortable than heavy wool socks. Long pants of wool or cotton twill are best. A light down jacket is preferable to bulky, wool sweaters. Packs with light weight, magnesium frames are recommended for heavy loads. A good quality goose down sleeping bag will cost $80 or more. Tents should not be viewed as luxury items as tarps offer too little protection in high mountain country. A tough, light weight, nylon poncho coated with plastic resin is highly recommended. A flashlight is essential; no mention is made of headlamps.The author, Paul Lawrence, mentions trail foods by brand name: Tang, Milkman (a more palatable powered milk), Perma-Pak (a creamy, powered milk product), Granola cereal, Darigold canned butter, Wilson's bacon bars, Wyler's fruit-ades, Mount Logan bread, and Pilot Biscuits. There is a discussion of "today's wide variety of freeze dried entrees". Lawrence recommends Mountain House products. Bleuet butane stoves are easy to use, but white gas stoves like Svea and Optimus are better at low temperatures.For those looking for a more current guidebook, I suggest Teton Trails - A Guide to the Trails of Grand Teton National Park by Katy Duffy and Darwin Wile. It offers detailed trail descriptions and updated information on hiking gear, backcountry rules and etiquette.

Well done, Carolyn Meyer. The story of the young Charles Darwin at home and on the Beagle is fully written in the form of a first person narrative. What I love about Carolyn Meyer's books is that they always compel me to read more on the subject. Her writing style and what she includes always piques my curiosity. This book is a great introduction to the life of Charles Darwin and I love also how Meyer brings to life his family including "The Sisterhood" his Wedgwood relatives and the interconnections between his world at home and the world out at sea. I enjoyed reading this and learned so much!

We meet Charley as a boy who prefers to hunt newts in the quarry rather than study Latin and Greek in the classroom; we sympathize with his plight as a youth under immense pressure to pursue careers in which he has no interest; and we experience the excitement of destiny realized when the young man embarks on a perilous journey that will forever transform the way he (and the rest of the world) understands the origin and complexity of life.Written in the voice of Charley Darwin, the text is accessible and thoroughly engaging for all readers who are young, and young at heart. The story focuses on Charley as a person - his relationships with friends, family and cousins, his struggles with questions of career and marriage. As an older man, his pictures reveal a thin, white-bearded, imposing-looking figure. Charles Darwin built his reputation as an outstanding scientist and collector. His life's work was devoted to the study of nature and the development of theories that, in his time, made him the subject of controversy. Gentle, shy and ever curious, he seemed destined from childhood to enlighten those around him.Charley Darwin was born in the right place to pursue his avid interests in nature. In England's peaceful Shrewsbury district, with its lovely rivers and woods, he took every opportunity to be outside exploring. Being the youngest boy, with three older, hovering sisters, he was happily indulged. Even his older brother, Erasmus "Ras", had a keen interest in nature and often joined him in dragging back various specimens found in the area. His younger sister, Emily, along with the three older ones --- Marianne, Susan and Caroline --- adored their two brothers. When their mother died, the sisters took over the job of "mothering" eight-year-old Charley --- especially the oldest, Caroline. Though loving, she was also strict in trying to discipline him in his education.Charley's father, a physician with a very successful practice, had great expectations for young Charles, hoping he also would go into medicine. Though Charley had excellent communication with patients and was clever with medicinal formulas, it was not the life he wanted. He had been very unhappy with his time in the Shrewsbury boarding school, and when his medical studies did not work out, his father decided he was more fit for the clergy. At Christ's College, though, he finished his degree, still drawn to botany, hunting and specimen collecting. He did manage to take botany courses and was very influenced by the geologist/scientist Adam Sedgwick. He also had begun his fascination with insects and shells. His father indulged him, knowing he was an extremely bright young man and knowing that the blood of his grandfather, Erasmus Darwin, a renowned scientist, ran strongly in the boy's blood. His sisters, on the other hand, were more frustrated that they could not find a perfect match for their brother.When an opportunity came, at the age of 22, for him to take part in an exploring expedition with Captain FitzRoy of the HMS Beagle, Charley did not hesitate --- though it would involve hardship and years away from England. At first his father was not pleased, but eventually supported him with blessings and financial aid.Three years aboard the HMS Beagle as a naturalist and companion to FitzRoy turned into five. The voyage basically took them around South America with stops at islands (such as the famous Galapagos) and inland areas along the way. Charley was often terribly ill from the effects of being seasick, and though he enjoyed all the explorations, he sometimes was overwhelmed by the hardships they endured. He sent hundreds of specimens back to England, and his father sent him hundreds of dollars. He dissected and preserved every sort of animal and bird he could shoot. His records were detailed, and the voyage turned out to be one of the most well-documented ventures thanks to his painstaking recordings.Reading about the adventures and encounters of Charley and the crew during this time makes the reader realize what a huge undertaking all of this was. At one point, with the bodies of so many dead birds and animals piled around him, Charley actually decided he had had enough killing of living things and began to pull back in that area. He became a strong conservationist for his time. His fascination with fossils and geology helped balance this out as he concentrated on varieties of shells, rocks and bones --- all of which would be groundbreaking in his body of work.The more he learned, the more questions he asked. Why were certain birds made with long beaks and others had short? Why did lizards within the same species have webbed feet or shorter tails or changing colors? His notes and studies, sent back to England, would be the basis for many detailed volumes that would show the natural evolvement among the species.Though his life was privileged through the wealth of his family and influential friends, the curious, daydreaming Charley Darwin used the opportunities he had to open the eyes of the world to a new way of thinking. As in her other biographical studies, Carolyn Meyer's appealing book is written with an eye for the fascinating details of the period. In some sense this book is more about the importance of the free press than "bad science". Chapter 10 did not appear in the original version of the book because Goldacre was being sued for libel at the time; while its publication is vindication, one can imagine that others without Goldacre's tenacity and backing would have given up. While media's misrepresentation bears the brunt of Goldacre's wrath throughout the book, that the book ended up on many "best of the year" lists indicates that there are two sides to this story, and there is good and bad media just like good and bad science (but you knew that). Goldacre's book is really aimed at journalists - if those covering science and health issues would read this and take it to heart, we might all be better off. (On the other hand, I think that it's likely that those enlightened journalists would just be replaced, as their publishers are mainly interested in making sales. Goldacre points out that the status quo is not to have true science journalists cover "big" science/health stories, because they tend to drain the sensational and erroneous b.s. out of them.)Aside from all that, for the rest of us it's still a very worthwhile read, because we can never hear too many times that we should use the scientific method and embrace evidence-based medicine, and we rarely hear it in a voice as entertaining as Goldacre's. Like some of the less-favorable reviews point out, the book is a bit repetitive and shrill at times (Goldacre seems to have a particular ax to grind with yuppies with humanities backgrounds), and very Brit-centric, so some might say five stars is a stretch. If the subject matter were less important I'd probably agree, but taken as a whole package the combination of importance and readability makes it a standout. Strongly recommended.

Overall a very good and amusing book. I think the author does get a little passionate about some topics and rambles a bit, but it's an ok tradeoff.I do wish the author gave more defining criteria for some of the items he discusses, especially about homeopathy. I would like to know more about what kind of products he has referring to in some of his discussions.Quality: see the photo, but the printer messed up on some of the pages and makes it hard to read! I thought I was having a stroke!

I just finished reading Bad Science by Ben Goldacre, and it's the most important book I've read in a long time. It's not a thriller, it's a nonfiction work of popular science. But that description doesn't do this book justice. Bad Science has the power to change the world (for the better), if people would read it carefully and with an open mind. It rails against the anti-science winds sweeping our culture, and more importantly, empowers ordinary people of reasonable intelligence to think like scientists and protect themselves from so much unscientific claptrap dressed up as science that is for sale, is on the Internet, and even in respectable media such as newspapers.In fact, I believe Bad Science should be a mandatory part of all high school science curricula, or at the very least, required reading for all medical students (who in my experience are as vulnerable to pseudoscience as other people). Heck, whoever you are, if you haven't read this book, you need to.Ben Goldacre is a brainy muckraker who, with acerbic wit and unassailable accuracy, attacks anti-scientific BS and clearly explains how it cloaks itself in a scientific aura, and how it's wrong. The beautiful thing is, you don't have to be a scientist or even a particularly scientifically literate person to understand. Anybody with a brain can detect BS if given the proper tools.Goldacre's targets cover the spectrum from "quacks, hacks" to "big pharma flacks". He lays bare the alternative realities in which live detox treatments, ear candling, anti-aging cosmetics, homeopathy, diet experts, antioxidants, pharmaceutical companies with large advertising budgets, vaccine opponents, and most frightening of all, people who oppose antiretroviral therapy for AIDS and argue that HIV does not cause this disease.In my opinion, the author is utterly fair in his arguments. But he is not always nice. (Is there a reason why he should be?) Ben Goldacre is my new hero, slaying dragons of ignorance and going head-to-head in intellectual combat with some of the most hysterically irrational elements in society today.Along the way as you read this entertaining book, you'll learn what you need to know about clinical trials, about the power and limitations of statistics, and about how to think critically, to become a little Ben Goldacre yourself.My favorite quote from the book is one of the best science quotes of all time:The plural of "anecdote" is not "data".

Interesting book. Author writes well with a cynical sense of humor. He has a chapter where he pounds some nutritionist who I never heard of but is apparently a big deal in the author's native England. It seems like a personal vendetta of some sort. Anyhow, there's enough good stuff in here that makes it worthwhile. The book makes you look at "evidence" and "studies" in a whole new way, and how you can filter out promotional crap from reality.
