The book looks good, but something that really annoys me is to find errors in the solutions. Exercise 11 is supposed to come from the game of Steinitz vs Meitner, Vienna, 1882. But the solution does not correspond to this game, but to the game of Mackenzie vs Steinitz, Vienna, 1882. And using the name index to find the solution was not useful.

I initially posted this review on the Chessable version of "The Woodpecker Method" 3 months ago. The rapid progress and online peaks continued after I posted my review, so there was likely some delayed integration."The Woodpecker Method" seems to have rapidly improved my chess in measurable ways. I decided to undertake an experiment regarding this book. I wanted to study it 3 hours per day (priority of review, then learning new lines) until I could solve the entire book (key moves) with 97+% accuracy within 3 hours (according to Chessable's timer). With such an intense method and Chessable's efficient platform, this only took me approximately 1 week to complete. First, I gathered data. I wanted to see where my skill for speed chess and speed tactics were at, as this book can supposedly help improve your tactical intuition. After 4 hours of chess.com blitz, my rating stabilized at approximately 2250 with a peak of 2279. I also did 4 hours of blitz tactics on chesstempo, finishing off with an approximate 2100 rating where my rating (when focused and optimized) tended to stay in the 2115 to 2120 range (give or take 10 points). During "The Woodpecker Method" 3 hr per day training, I did 4 chess.com blitz games per day on most days, more on some. I beat a GM within days of starting serious study of "The Woodpecker Method", then started to peak on chess.com blitz almost every day. Fast forward to approximately 1 week later, after I succeeded in solving the book within 3 hrs (98% accuracy!), I gathered new data on chess.com blitz and chesstempo blitz tactics. My blitz peak went from 2279 to 2335! My chesstempo blitz peaked (old peak: about 2150), I got 2163, and I'm currently sitting at 2150, which was higher than the highest rating I was at during the pre-woodpecker data collection by approximately 20-30 points.One of my friends who knows a lot about chess improvement suspects that this is only part of the improvement that will happen as the result of this study, perhaps more will kick in within a couple months.Edit: later on the same day I wrote this review, my chesstempo blitz tactics peaked by another 15 points or so (approx. 2180). It seems that some of the results from woodpecker are immediate, some are delayed.Conclusion: intensive study of "The Woodpecker Method" brought me rapid and noticeable results. Highly recommended, 5/5 stars.

The book itself is great. The cover is beautiful, better than expected in fact, the interior is also great quality with the artwork and the content. My only real complaints are that it arrived horribly packaged, no protection to the book itself. It was literally laid on a box and had some air packs on top of it. The part that bothers me the most is some MORON decided to put a STICKER ON THE COVER OF A COLLECTOR EDITION BOOK! Other than that the book itself is worth buying.

Love the look of these limited edition books. I'm looking forward to more of these releases in the future.

I have every 5e book I could find and this is easily the best resource for high level enemies, plus the fey elves are really cool. Alternate cover looks incredible.

This book does a good job of explaining the Ketogenic diet. It contains a good amount of recipes and has readable directions and the recipes seem to all be fairly easy to make. However, a Ketogenic is mainly a diet of increased fats, lean proteins, and severely restricted carbohydrates. I didn't find any recipes that gave the number of grams of Fats, Carbs, Fiber, and Proteins. On the Ketogenic diet, you are encouraged to keep the carbohydrate count below 50 grams a day so it seems to me that the recipes should at least give the number of carbs per serving. The Ketogenic diet stresses no sugar, but I found several recipes the contain white sugar or coconut sugar. Of course, you could make the recipe and substitute Stevia for the sugar. But somehow I think Ketogenic recipes that contain sugar is defeating the purpose.

Past experience tells the Atkins diet works, and this seems to be same thing in different words - ketosis is the operating principle for Atkins too. The question is, will I become so tired of never having good bread that I give up? There are a few places where this book goes astray (one recipe is repeated twice under different names, one clearly wrong; some amounts are questionable). It looks to be worth trying.

Although it was informative, this is a book for beginners- so why weren't there macros listed for each recipe? Many of us do not have time to figure them out for each recipe.

Book emphasizes keeping track of macro groups daily but then does not provide that info for its recipes!!!! Not helpful!

While the diet was explained quite well and easy to understand, the recipes are not completely ketogenic. Several recipes call for honey, sugar, wheat flour, and suggest you pay off excess fat when cooking. None of that helps get you in ketosis.

Why isn't there any nutritional value on the recipes? This is worthless. One of the most important things to have if you're tracking.

The recipes seem good but there are no nutrition facts to tell you how many carbs, fat or protein you are getting in each serving. You could figure it out with a macro nutrient calculator but it would take forever to do each recipe!

What a wonderful peak at a unique people, the wild Scottish islands they call home and their way of life.

"Call the Nurse" is a charming and interesting book of tales and memories from the author's experience serving as the local district nurse on an isolated island in the Hebrides beginning in the 1960s. As one of only two healthcare professionals on the island (the other an elderly doctor who lived on the other side of a mountain range), she was responsible for making rounds on local patients needing treatment, as well as responding to any emergencies that came up. This often entailed walking miles over unimproved footpaths to outlying cottages, or crossing the treacherous inter-island waters in a small boat to reach isolated cottagers on even smaller islands.Her patients exhibited the expected range of needs, and in some cases severe challenges, including dementia in elderly patients who could not face life away from their traditional "crofts" (small family farmsteads, worked by hand, often without machinery or electricity), and some cases of horrific abuse among isolated families with no oversight from the local community or authorities. The author's writing sometimes reaches a truly poetic level, usually in descriptions of the country or the sky, but is often more pedestrian. The author details her colorful and sometimes eccentric neighbors and their remarkably cohesive, giving personalities, but not well enough that we truly come to know them. The book is a kind of human-centered version of the popular James Herriott stories of rural veterinary practice, but without quite the same self-aware sense of humor and broad perspective.An interesting volume detailing Scottish country life during the dying of the "crofter and laird" social structure, and giving an up-close look at what it was like to live in one of its most extreme geographical reaches at that time. A quick and pleasant read. Not a classic, but a worthy addition to its genre.

Well, James Herriot, she isn't. I thought the stories tended to be superficial and did not for the most part bring the islanders to life. I was moved by the stories about the plight of the old people who were in poor mental and physical health, the abused spouses, the abused children. Even in the UK there were vast cracks through which helpless people could fall. At least the nurse didn't send them a bill!Some reviewers have criticized the author for not naming the island, saying that a lot of the islanders are probably dead now. That may be true, but their descendants are not. Some people -- not me -- would read this book as a patronizing indictment of the people and culture of the island. Primitive. Narrow-mindedly religious. Poor. Dirty. Drunks. One side of the coin is quaint and charming. The other side of that coin is uncivilized. If it were my grandparents she was writing about, I wonder how I'd feel about having their community named? So I think the pseudonym was appropriate and kind.The book doesn't have a finish. It just quits. The author says she hopes to return to the island someday. Okay. But why did she and her family leave in the first place? How did they, especially the children, feel about leaving? What about the relationships that had developed over the years? Not a hint. That was unsatisfying.

Tired of the hustle and bustle and wanting a quieter life, Mary MacLeod and her husband, George, moved to the Scottish Hebrides. Life on the island that they chose (I don't understand why the real name isn't given) is slower-paced but far from dull. Mary is employed as the district nurse, one of only two medical professionals on the island, along with an elderly physician. This charming story is a series of happenings that take place over the years that she and her family lived in the Hebrides. The stories by turn are funny, thought-provoking, or tragic. She has an almost poetic way of describing the island and it's inhabitants. If you are a fan of James Herriott, you will most likely enjoy this book. I am sincerely looking forward to her second one.For those who don't know, Mrs. MacLeod wrote this book at 80 years of age. Amazing.

Perhaps one must be a nurse to understand the strengths, dedication and the ability to evaluate a situation in a brief increment of time-that may change the life of a person- as shown in Mary J. MacLeod's book. However, one need not be a health care provider to enjoy this book. Most members of highly industrialized nations will marvel at the creature comforts that are considered necessities for daily living- traded by this family to live in a culture that would be considered 'off the grid.' The benefits of knowing all of the inhabitants of this one island and standing together to live, learn, play and survive- living without washers, dryers, 100 television channels/no TV but depending on a radio for news and entertainment, would be shunned by the majority of individuals raised in today's high tech culture.The roads were often hazardous, emergency transportation off island difficult, medical back-up at times consisted of speaking with a physician via phone or radio.This book is a wonderful, true account of the 1960's culture of a small Scottish isle, of families whose lives and occupations were much like their ancestors many generations past. This is a wonderful read- well written by an author who cared for and became an important part of the lives of those she served.

Besides the actual Bible, The Total Money Makeover is the financial literacy bible that many Christians follow. I've had my share of debt in my life. I had undergraduate and graduate subsidized student loans. I also had a 30 year mortgage, that my husband and I paid off in 6.5 years- well before reading this book, mind you. My husband also had undergraduate student loans and he took a car loan in college. At this time, we have no debt at all. We own our home, contribute to retirement and college savings funds, own our (new) vehicles, and we donate to charitable causes that are meaningful. We live frugally now so that in the future, we won't be tied down to working forever... or will we anyway, in order to have healthcare? But I digress.I get miffed with people who won't take responsibility for their financial choices. I've done without a lot of things that everybody else my age seems to feel is essential. I use coupons, buy secondhand clothes, we don't take vacations, I don't go to the salon, and I could go on and on. We do this so we can save for our future, our kids' future, and so that I can stay home with our kids- at this point, my whole paycheck would go to childcare anyway.Ramsey's advice is good for people who have absolutely no financial sense. It can get them on solid financial footing if they have the self-discipline to follow it. However, it's not going to make them rich. Some of the advice might not even be that helpful, say, if they want to buy a home but have cut up their credit cards and thus have no credit history. I know few people who can pay cash for their home... and I live in Ohio, which is not a pricey place to live.The book also makes a lot of references to Ramsey's other programs, such as Financial Peace University. I think he's trying to double dip by doing that. The book proclaims to be "total" so *all* the information needed to make over your finances should be here. You shouldn't have to spend another couple hundred bucks to get the rest of the pertinent information.Also, it's not Biblical to get rich, which is something that seems to be glossed over. The idea that everyone can make a killing by following Ramsey's financial advice isn't accurate, either. There are going to be winners and losers in the stock market. I'm going to pass this book along to a family member who declared bankruptcy a few years ago and is considering doing it again. Maybe it will help the family member get a solid footing on what needs to be done without passing the buck.Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book in exchange for writing a review. After years of hearing and reading about The Total Money Makeover, I finally grabbed myself a copy and read the whole thing in one night. While I would not call myself a Dave Ramsey fan, there was definitely value in the book. He has 7 steps he suggests moving through:1. Save $1000Pretty straight forward. You need a bumper for the small emergencies. Shit happens.2. Debt SnowballThe debt snowball approach is something quite valuable that took reading about in this book to fully grasp and get behind. It’s quite simple in its brilliance actually. You make a list of your debts from smallest to biggest (excluding mortgage) and focus all of your financial effort on one debt at a time (making only the minimum payment on all others), working your way down. Once you cross one off, you divert all the money you were paying on that debt to the next, with the payment size growing at each step. We only had 2 debts (1 car loan and the consolidated student loans) so it wasn’t too complicated. Still, it was helpful. I had been focusing on building the savings but diverted my attention and resources to stamping out the car loan instead. I can see how this technique could be life-saving for people who are overwhelmed with debtors.A main tenet of his book is that we can and should all be debt-free. There is a lot that resonates with me about living a debt-free life and this is a message I hope more people hear and get inspired by. Minimalism and debt-free are very good friends. Though I’m not dogmatic or militant about it. There are times when debt has been advantageous in my life but we don’t take it lightly, only entering into it consciously, with eyes wide open and a clear plan.3. 3-6 Months Expenses in SavingsBuilding up and maintaining a savings of 3-6 months expenses is the next focus only after all debts are paid. Companies go under. Employees get laid off. Freelance work experiences a drought. People get sick. Life happens. You need an emergency fund to get you through the hard times. In today’s professional climate, this is even more essential than in the past because the old working model of clocking in at 20 and retiring from the same company at 55 is dead. (I recently read The End of Jobs, which I recommend if you want to read more about that.) 3 years is actually the sweet spot in terms of job satisfaction and performance for being at a company. If you’re changing jobs every few years, the transitions can be sticky. You need a buffer.4. 15% to Retirement (401K, ROTHIRA, Mutual Funds Investing)There is one line he hammers throughout the entire book over and over again: “If you will live like no one else, later you can live like no one else.” He means that if you live a shitty life in your prime, you might enjoy a nice life when you are old and retired. Most of his examples throughout the book glorify families in which the parents work 3 jobs and rarely see their kids but by golly, they might have a nice savings if they make it to old age running themselves ragged. This is the heart of his philosophy and it’s one I completely disagree with. My philosophy is definitely more in line with Tim Ferris in that regard who urges you not to sacrifice your present for a future that may never come in the 4-hour work week (Ramsey actually even throws shade at Tim’s approach in this book). Particularly when there are children involved. My kids would rather have us present and be happy, healthy, rested, and homeschooling with a student loan floating out there than have us be absent working 3 jobs while they are in school and daycare with no student loan. These years are so important and while being debt free and financially healthy is a priority (we don’t use credit, we snowball, we budget, we save, we contribute to retirement), it is not the priority.5. College Fund (ESA funded in growth stock mutual funds)I appreciate that he does include a bit about college not being a golden ticket. If you want to read more about our approach to college for our 3 kids, check out Sage Homeschooling: Wild and Free.6. Pay off MortgageThis is where I hop off the Dave Ramsey train entirely. I know someone who had 3 houses paid off and then the real estate market crashed and they lost everything. I don’t plan to stay in the same house my entire life and I am happy to purchase a property with a mortgage, fix it up with a tight budget and lots of elbow grease, and sell it several years later when we are ready to move on to a new adventure (freedom of mobility). Also, the nation’s average income ($50K) paired with the cost of housing in a major city ($710K in Seattle), don’t line up for buying a house all cash. Again, his mindset around this is painfully outdated. The person he is talking to gets hired by Blockbuster out of college, works there 35 years, then retires and dies in their rocking chair on the porch. Norman Rockwell called and he wants his financial advice back. That is just not the world we live in anymore.7. Build Wealth (invest)He claims the only way to get rich is to invest in the stock market.Overall, it’s a book worth reading. The first 3 steps alone should be knowledge every teenager launches knowing. The philosophy is not my jam and I could certainly do without the patriarchal overtones and bible verses, but a quick and easy read that adds value nonetheless.I was hoping for some budgeting inspiration but found none in this book. I’m presently trying You Need a Budget. We’ll see . . .
