I hate pictures in books taken with cheap cameras. Some of the photos reveal stuff you would never have thought of? Why a picture of a pushup or a neckroll. I am a USPTA tennis pro (from Bollettieri's in Florida) and some of the exercises in this book are not tennis specific. Here's the big problem: Exercises with weights can often cause erratic stroking. Too many bicep curls, for example, often cause an upward swing forward. Remember: You only have 17 degrees left/right before you hit wide shots. Dumbell fly's can cause you to hit too far forward, which for right handers will pull the ball wide on the left when it crosses the net. I was annoyed at: NO index. Maybe weight training might help an upper level player with endurance, but it's nowhere near as beneficial as cardio exercise. Pass on weights; get on the court!

I have been working out for over fifty years and found this book to be a big disappointment. There are a few pages stating how your tennis will benefit from weight training. Other than that, there is almost nothing that is tennis specific.I found this book to be a complete waste of money for anyone who already has knowledge of weight training in general. I did not see any new exercises that were not already described in various other weight training manuals.If you are a novice to weight training, this book may be of some value to you. However, there are better weight training books out there.

I have a few of the books from this series, and they're very good. Pictures for everything and well written out plans. Obviously everyone needs their own plan, so don't expect the plans to be perfect for everyone.

This book has no index, making it impossible to find any specific exercises without combing through the entire book.

I had completely forgotten that I had pre-ordered this, and was pleasantly surprised when it arrived one day. Dobby is easily my favourite Harry Potter character, and represents so much good in the world, and this is a wonderful depiction of him and some of his memorable quotes from Chamber of Secrets. I really only can say that I wish they would have included the dialogue from Deathly Hallows, Part I, but you cannot have everything.

Very well done but will not stand being dropped. Not for kids as a play toy. Photo is from desk top drop onto floor.

This little Dobby figure is an excellent replica! The voice sounds just like his and the little book that comes with him is a sweet addition. It has quotes from Dobby and pictures. Very pleased with my Dobby especially since the detail is very much there!

I couldn't believe how great this was. Being a "potterhead" all thing related to the series I want to have. I didn't expect Dobby to be as perfect as his was. The voice is straight from the movie sound track and I think he says about a dozen dif things. VERY much worth the price.

My ol' lady loves Dobby and this was perfect for her for Christmas. Came just how described. Not very loud but it's Dobby's voice and sayings. Looks just like the little guy unlike some other products I have seen of him.

Just adorable. Gave it as a gift to a Harry Potter fan and she loves it. So cute with the different things it says. I tried it before wrapping it and almost kept it for myself. Nice gift. Fast delivery.

The best thing a new story has going for it is an unusual character, circumstance, or setting. Diary of a Jewish Muslim: An Egyptian Novel (AUC Press, 2014), written by Kamal Ruhayyim and translated by Sarah Enany, had all three, making it treat to read. I doubt there are many fictional books about Jews in Arab countries, and even fewer readily available in English. Add in an inter-religious marriage, and this is definitely not your typical coming-of-age novel.I’ll say right off: Don’t believe the inside book cover. The story actually dates from the 1950s to the 1970s, not the 1930s to the 1960s mentioned in the publisher’s description, causing me some unnecessary confusion. The Suez War has ended, and Egypt’s Muslims and Jews live in a world of bigotry, hostility, and antagonism coming from both sides. Because of the worsening political situation, many Jews are immigrating to other countries like France for asylum. This is the world in which Galal is born and raised. The only son of a Muslim father he’s never met and a Jewish mother, he takes us on a journey of laughter and tears through his formative years, as he tries to discover his true identity.I liked this book straightaway for three reasons. First, it isn’t shy about the religious tensions. The reader has to learn how to like, or at least empathize with, the characters despite their bigotry, rather than being treated with a watered-down version of it. Second, while popular culture likes to focus on the love of the Romeo and Juliet and their right to get together, few people care to talk about what happens to the children of mixed unions, who often grow up confused about who they are, unable to really hold on to anything permanent or confidently pursue love of their own. As the outcome of an inter-racial marriage, I could identify with Galal as he constantly feels out of place in both sides of his family and not fully accepted by his peers. A lot of readers might find this depressing, but it’s arguably realistic.Third, I thought the diary approach was particularly entertaining for the early years. The reader is told what happens from the baby’s, toddler’s, and child’s perspectives, not from a grown man’s perspective looking back on his past. The reader sees the religious and cultural conflict, not as the adults who perpetuate them see them, but as a child just learning how to navigate through life sees them: confusing, unfair, and often contradictory.What didn’t I like about Diary of a Jewish Muslim? At times, the book can be a rough read. Some religious and cultural references are explained, while others are sort of left to the reader to figure out. Once or twice, I was confused about who was speaking, possibly a flaw in the author’s writing style, possibly an error in the translation. And I had to reread the last three chapters to make sense of the ending. I think I know where the author was trying to go with it, but I don’t think he was successful in getting his main character there. So while I enjoyed the beginning and middle, I was left unsatisfied with the close. However, I don’t want that to keep you from at least checking it out. This case was never opened before a lot so i think it is a very good idea from the author to writ about the Arab Jews and how their life look like and how they reacted in the Muslim community. This was a fun book to read. The characters were interesting, and although we don't learn everything about each of them, we know enough to realize several of them are good people doing terrible things for what they see as a good reason. This is particularly true of the main character, John Rain, whose past is revealed slowly throughout the book. The reader learns first of the discomfort of being half Japanese and half American, but later there are revelations of much worse atrocities and we come to see how all of those things have made him the flawed - but strangely caring - human being he is. It didn't have one of those unbelievably perfect Hollywood happy endings which actually take away from many books, but had a more realistic ending in which some things came out okay and some did not. I thank the author for that. The only reason I gave it less than five stars is because I found it difficult at times to follow and distinguish between the people and places in Tokyo, sometimes even momentarily forgetting if a proper noun referred to a person or a place. The politics of Japan were also a little confusing, although a general feel for the corruption was fairly sufficient. Lastly, while Japanese terms (including many used in judo) were generally described, a lack of prior knowledge of these things made it a bit difficult to slog through some parts. I admit, some of that is my own ignorance of all things Japanese, so someone with more familiarity would likely not have those issues. Still, overall I do recommend this book, and think this author did a nice job of drawing me in. This is the first of a series, and I plan to read book two very soon.

My reading interests are wide and varied. Lately I have been reading numerous books with a martial arts theme thriller. I just finished reading this fascinating (Rain Fall by Barry Eisler) page turning novel. The main character is unique, deadly, and may even be a little bit of a psychopath. In this respect he can be considered an unusual hero or possibly an anti-hero character.John Rain is a professional a hit man with just three requirements which must be followed in order for him to complete the job. (1) It must be a man because he does not do hits on women or children. (2) He insists no one else be retained when he takes on the job. (3) Is the target a principle? His specialty is making the hit look like an accident and the person died of natural causes. His background is also unique. His mother was American but his father was Japanese. He is also an expert at Judo and has lived in Japan and the United States. In this novel he is working in Japan and can speak both Japanese and English. This novel is full of Japanese terms which for me make this a very interesting read. This story begins with a hit on a man with a bad heart who wears a pace maker.I never like to give away too much when reviewing a novel because it spoils it for the reader; however, if you are looking for a fantastic thriller with well-developed characters that keep you turning the pages, you should check out this book. This is the first volume in the John Rain series, which I came to after reading the last two volumes, in backwards order (The Killer Collective and Zero Sum). After reading those two, and becoming aware that they were in fact the most recent additions to a series that had begun in 2003, I decided to start at the beginning. What a great place to start! I loved getting to know how the John Rain character had been introduced, and enjoying a few aha moments as I recognized a few people and incidents that had been referenced (but not explained) in the later books. The characters just pop with realism—you immediately feel that you know them very well, and they remain true to form as they develop further. The action is appropriately descriptive, and if you ever practiced any of the martial arts you will see things you recognize, plus many more that you never learned. To put the icing on the cake, the novel is filled with jazz, as one of the main characters is a jazz pianist. As I read the descriptions of her music, I thought of the contemporary Japanese jazz pianist known as Hiromi, whom I have seen in concert. The descriptions of Midori’s performances were worthy of any concert review you might read in Downbeat or Jazz Times; clearly this author knows his jazz as well as his martial arts and tradecraft—and what a delightfully complex plot he weaves! I can’t wait to begin the next volume in the series.

This is a decent, well-written novel featuring a retired CIA operative now working as a freelance assassin. In this one he takes out a Japanese government employee with a terminal disease that induces him to do something honorable before he dies, exposing corruption. The fact that he did not deserve to die in this manner is left hanging; the assassination order came from a government bad guy so the protagonist proves to have a bad moral compass. Unlike Robin Hood, he's killing good guys not bad guys. In a strange twist of fate, the man's daughter, a talented jazz pianist, becomes romantically involved with our "hero" but one can predict that this is a relationship doomed to fail. The story unfolds totally in Japan and is worth reading but less than memorable.

About the Author

Professor Michael Wilson is emeritus Professor of Microbiology at University College London (UCL), where he has worked since 1983. He has taught students on Bachelor and Master’s courses in microbiology covering many aspects of the subject, including the human microbiota, infectious diseases, bacterial pathogenesis, microbial biofilms, infection control, and antimicrobial chemotherapy. He also actively engaged in research at UCL, and in recognition of his research achievements, he was awarded a DSc in 1999 by the National University of Ireland and in 2011 was appointed Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques by the French Minister of National Education. His main research interests are the indigenous microbiota of humans, biofilms, bacterial pathogenesis, antibiotic resistance, and the development of new antimicrobial strategies. He has a great interest in translational research and has applied for 13 patents for inventions in the fields of light-activated antimicrobial agents and water purification. In 1990 he received the National Westminster/British Petroleum Innovation Award and in 1991 the Toshiba "Invention of the Year" Award for inventing a low-technology method of sterilizing water for use in developing countries. He has published 334 peer-reviewed scientific papers, 238 conference abstracts, and 11 books, one of which, Bacteriology of Humans: An Ecological Perspective, was awarded the first prize in the Royal Society of Medicine and Society of Authors Medical Book Awards in 2008. He has supervised the research projects of 35 PhD students and 46 MSc students. He is also enthusiastic about communicating the results of his research to the general public. Consequently, he has organised exhibitions for, and given talks to, the public on a number of topics including the human microbiota, antibiotic resistance, and light-activated antimicrobial agents.
