The Formula of Concord is the last of the Lutheran Confessions - the formal doctrinal articles of the Lutheran church. It comes in two forms - a solid declaration that is long and rarely read and the epitome or summary that was requested by the Lutheran princes of the time. That request must rank as one of the great editorial and executive decisions of all time. The epitome of the Formula of Concord in twelve articles lays out in a clear and understandable form the doctrine of the church in many important controversies. It does this both by laying out the positive case and by pointing out error in negative statements.This book goes article by article with discussions that live up to the source material. If you are Lutheran and have never read the epitome of the formula of concord, and your pastor won't walk through it, this book is a great companion. Share it with him and suggest a study. If you are a pastor, this book is a wonderful starting point for such a discussion group and remarkably relevant. The biggest hurdle is often the thought that no 500 year old document can be relevant, but the formula used in this book is both faithful and cuts to the core of how we live life and wait in hope.

Who would have thought that the Formula of Concord, written in 1577, could teach us about both doctrine and problem solving? Timothy Wengert's book draws upon the research of Reformation scholar Robert Kolb. Dr. Kolb was one of my mentors while I attended seminary. Anything with Dr. Kolb's name attached to it is good for me! Actually, this is not a deeply scholarly book. It teaches us how the 16th century church dealt with factions in their age. There are plenty of lessons here we still need to apply to our own day and age.

Timothy Wengert makes a very fine attempt at making the Formula of Concord relevant to today's parishioners. This is all the more appreciable if you read the Formula of Concord. It is hardly the first thing on most people's minds these days. Wengert, relying heavily on Robert Kolb's scholarship, gives a fine historical introduction to each article. He then explains the article in question and then relates a charming story from his days in the parish. Since this is not supposed to be a scholarly analysis of the Formula I suppose I could say that Wengert makes it as relevant as it can be made for today's laypeople.

Unique and uplifling, historically accurate and pragmatic. Pastors would do well to read and put into practice.

This gives great insight to how Lutheran theology applies to daily life. This serves as an example of Lutheran apologetics.

I have bought a copy of this book for everyone who mentions they are looking for a job. It is just excellent. It guided me in my job searches and would guide anyone who is waiting, looking for a job, and their phone does not ring.

Most people have heard about this book, and most would probably view it in a favorable light as far as career books go. I ordered this to supplement my own job search research, and I found it has a few crucial issues that cause me to doubt its value in modern job hunter's library.Problem 1: this book is full of redirectionThis means long or old websites, often specific articles, common knowledge search sites or government websites. A better book would sum up or synthesize this information. Even better, if this book were online, the long links would actually be useful. The tool set offered by paper and ink simply doesn't make sense for the sheer amount of links and tech direction. But the problem with web peripherals or even the internet is that access to the same information is free for the user.Problem 2: similarly, the book endlessly plugs its workbooks and other materials. Many if not most footnotes refer to buying parachute workbooks. The book mentions non-parachute creations too, but in one case, this turned out to be a 2 dollar, mediocre 'work' tracker app that reputedly makes suggestions for your job search based on how many interviews you've been invited to. I can't imagine this being seriously recommended to anyone. There was no worksheet or on paper direction to do this for yourself, either, so I have to guess that this was either a bad rec or the writer was getting kickback from the app maker. Which brings me to my final point...Problem 3: fillerGo to a bookstore, scan the nonfiction section and look for books purporting to be informative. You'll see that regardless of topic they trend toward a thickness of at least 3/4ths of an inch. Book publishers know that a thicker book implies more information.So this book beats around the bush, includes common sense information or even fills un formated paragraphs with step by steps on changing your Google settings.Considering that I can get most of the advice from this book online and in a leaner format, I regret making a purchase a little bit.

I am optimistic about my career change. This book seals the deal on how I should start my job search. At first I was scare, but now that I have the tools to be a success I am not afraid anymore.Side note: Over twenty years ago, I saw What Color is Your Parachute in my college library. I thought to myself what a stupid name. Now I wished I would have picked up the book them. It would have save me so much time and money.

Our late friend, Dick Bolles, continued up to his death at 90 this past March to 'blog' his thoughts and ideas with us that made this book the 'bible' for anyone thinking about or attempting to change careers and look for new work. His own 'calling' to ministry as an Episcopalian minister shifted into being the 'chaplain' for those seeking to find work that is meaningful, full of purpose, and for the common good of all. He will be sorely missed. And this is his final edition will cement the book as a classic in understanding and finding one's calling "that transcendent summons that brings purpose and meaning to work that supports the well-being of others and the common good".

It started quite interesting, with a lot of "motivational speech" and convincing talk about why we should choose a job that gears towards us. There were inventories to do that helped push you to think about certain aspects of getting a job and what job would be a good fit for you. However, a lot of tips were the sort of things you can find in TheMuse or Monster or other websites nowadays. The inventories themselves were helpful, but I could have discovered my preferences for these sort of things with some more reflection rather than this book. The book was of course helpful, but not life-changing.

I recommend this book to anyone who whats to find the occupation that fits their personality and abilities. Excellent for any high school or college graduate. Also great for anyone seeking a change in careers; one that is best suited for their personality, style, and abilities.

A perennial, important resource for the job market. I've used it for values clarification (what makes you want to get up and go to work every day? What is your calling, your vocation?) and also for the job hunt. I am a walking testimonial to this book!

We tell our clients to read this. I'm a "Candidate Advocate" so finding the right tools to study when not doing one-on-one is crucial. One needs to know which things to focus on and not get caught up in the study as much as the personal motion. These two are locked in a battle of wills which one will come out on top?The author draws you in to the story with her ability to write endearing characters. Tory is innocent and awkward in her own skin. Tory reminds everyone what it is like be 18, falling in love and trying to find your path in the world that will lead you to who you are meant to be.Jake is just sweet,loving,sexy and doing his best to love Tory and support her however he can. They truly bring out the best in each other.When this group of family and friends get together you feel like you are part of their lives.Rusty who wouldn’t want a Rusty? I love the relationship and bond Tory and Rusty have. Their bond is evident through out the story.The Barefoot Pasture books are amazing. The two books in this saga are the first I have read by this author. I was not disappointed. I recommend them and can’t wait for more from this crew. Thank you Lili Mahoney for giving us these amazing books.

I'm not usually a YA Reader , but I gave book one a chance and loved it . It was easy to dive right back into this series to find out what happens to Tory and Rusty in book Two .I needed to know What's next in Tory's life after She's injured and cannot do the one thing she was born to do ….Ride Horses.It was very emotional to watch Tory and Rusty being separated because of her accident . They have such a strong connection at times it just broke my heart .Tory is determined , stubborn , and doesn't give up easy .I like that about her.... I knew she would make it back in that saddle again .Which brought in the action and adventure I enjoyed.But you also start to see a change in Tory .Those defenses crumble a bit , she's spending more time with family, friends and Jake .I loved Jake and Tory together . He is so gentle and patient with her .He's not going to give up on her , even though sometimes it's hard .He knows she's what he wants and he's willing to wait . Theirs is a beautifully written, slow building romance that feels real and right .I'm excited and cant wait to see what happens next in this YA Saga.

This is a beautifully written coming of age love story. I absolutely loved this story! Tory is an 18 year old girl, trying to figure out her way in the world. She is extremely stubborn and determined to be independent and show everyone she is capable of doing things on her own. Jake wants nothing more than to be the man that Tory needs and loves. He is dominant by nature but realizes in order to win her heart he has to let her be wild and free and just enjoy her independent spirit. I enjoyed the chemistry between these two characters and I loved watching Jake become the man Tory needed. The author gives you such a vivid description of the environment that Tory lives in and her attention to detail is amazing. One of my favorite characters is Rusty her horse. He takes after is owner and is extremely stubborn and only really tolerates being touched by Tory. The relationship they have together, how they are able to communicate and are dependent on one another is fascinating. She has been through a lot in her young life and the bond they have has helped her heal. I truly enjoyed the banter between her and the periphery characters especially her twin brothers. I would love to learn more about them in the future. Overall I truly loved this story and the characters were thoroughly developed. The story kept me engaged throughout. I am anxiously awaiting to see what happens to all these characters in the future!

All I have to say is WOW! This book captured my attention immediately and I just couldn't let it go. Barefoot Pastures- Book Two is filled with depth, meaning and just the right amount of angst. The storyline is engaging and consistent. Initially I didn't think Ms. Mahoney could top Barefoot Pastures One however she definitely proved me wrong and exceeded my expectations. Jake and Tory's love story is just wonderful and made my heart full. I highly recommend reading both books.

This is a continuation to Barefoot Pastures (Book One) so if you haven't read it yet, you really should. You will understand the story and the characters much better.If you have read Barefoot Pastures (Book One) you have already fallen in love with the characters. Ms. Mahoney put so much depth into all of her characters that you feel you really know them and they are really good friends. This is true of even lesser characters like friends of the boys, DC, Nate and Bo.I wish I grew up like Tory raising and training horses, competing in Rodeos. I have always liked horses and rodeos but lost track of them due to life getting in the way but these books have reawakened my love for both.I highly recommend reading this book and anxiously look forward to the next part of Tory's story, heading to college and seeing where she and Jake go next in their relationship.

It provides a great short history to Salsa in the US and gave me all the steps (no pun intended!) to get started and build up the confidence to look for local classes. Salsa is a beautifully sexy dance that can be done with your partner (like me) or I imagine it is a great way to meet like-minded other fit and sexy women! If your even remotely interested in Salsa this is your place to start. Recommended!

I have been dancing for a few years and would consider myself to be an intermediate dancer. I picked this book up because it looked like a good read. I really enjoyed it. This book not only explains dance styles to get you started, but goes beyond and explains the different countries styles of salsa, health benefits, and mentality required to make you an excellent dancer. 5 stars!!!!

Very short book. Contains about the same information that you will get on your first lesson if you take a salsa class. Same information is available for free on many salsa enthusiast web sites. I was hoping for a list of salsa moves with schematics, but no such luck! Not worth the money unless you are an absolute beginner and can't be bothered to search for the information online.

This book is an outstanding contribution to Madison scholarship. I'm a Madison fan and read every book that comes out on him. I'm interested in him because he seems to me the most scholarly of presidents and politicians. His approach to politics was to deal with political issues by reading and researching in depth on them and developing a position. He believed that the government of a republic was to be guided by reason, and the role of citizens was to reason to the best solution to political issues. One comment on his behavior when he was in Congress was "he was the best prepared on both sides of every issue." This book is a thoroughly researched presentation on Madison's role in developing the Constitution, the Democrat-Republican party, and his presidency. (The cover calls these three periods "Genius, Partisan, President," while the table of contents calls them "Constitution, Party, War.") This book is not a biography. It does not cover Madison's life outside of these three periods. But it provides the best and most well researched analysis of these periods of Madison's life. It's a feast and a must for Madison devotees, but could be a challenge for general readers, as the level of detail, references, and length of the book do not make it a quick read. The author makes a thorough analysis of Madison's positions and reasoning processes, offering fair criticism when he sees inconsistencies. I could find only one error in this voluminous text. On page 140, 2nd paragraph, he says: "The next day, June 29, 1787...". The reference is to a speech Madison had given on June 19, 1787, arguing against the New Jersey plan. The Constitutional Convention met on eight intervening days between June 19 and June 29. So to say that June 29 was the next day is not accurate. This may be an editing error in which some of the author's text was cut. In any event, is does not detract from the overall achievement of this masterful book. In this time of high political partisanship we can learn much from James Madison. Yes, he had political enemies, like Patrick Henry. But his disagreements were based on thoroughly reasoned positions. Today political opinions often seem to amount to political sloganeering with little attempt to research the facts. The politics, and especially, the thought processes of Madison can guide us to emphasizing reason and logic in contemporary politics. This book is an outstanding guide to thoroughly understanding Madison's thinking.

Professor Feldman has written a solid scholarly review of the three most major aspects (the U.S. Constitution/ political operative with Jefferson/ president) of the public career of one of our country's principal founders. Most interesting to me is the materiel devoted to the drafting and later selling of the U.S. Constitution; also the discussion of the War of 1812 enlightened a corner of our national past that was hitherto shadowy for me.This is a good book to read for those, including myself, entranced by Alexander Hamilton. It provides the other side of the active policy debates between these two giants as our country took early form. (I still believe Hamilton was on the correct side of the long-term historical ledger.)I do think Professor Feldman is overly lenient in favoring or excusing the actions of James Madison, especially as president, but this is the norm for most biographers toward their subjects. All in all a very good intellectual biography.

Excellent overview of one of our most complex founding fathers. The three lives conceit works superbly as an organizing principle and shows how one of our greatest political figures could apparently contradict himself as he remained true to deeper guiding principles. It also demonstrates how Madison evolved over time to become ever more complex and general in his interior models of a great republic. If you wish to see the factors that come into play during Madison's evolution and how they are still in play today, I urge you to read this excellent book. The author shows both a deep and a critical reading of period literature and of original materials by the main players. It is rare to see such an instructive distillation of deep and broad scholarship. The sources used and cited are not interpretations, but are the original materials. Does Madison have feet of clay on the subject of Native Americans? Absolutely. Was he a slaveholder that had no interest in shaking the habit? Indeed. Was he a fundamental player in helping create our system of government? No doubt. Was he an originalist re: the Constitution he was the primary driver in creating? When it suited him. Did he see the Constitution as a point of departure in an evolving form of government? Yes. You will learn of this complexity in Noah Feldman's excellent book. Mr. Feldman's description of Mr. Madison's time away from everyone to develop grounding principles in both religious freedom and a new form of government deeply appealed to me. I am stunned by Mr. Madison's boldness and humility in helping create a new form of government.A most profound thank you, Mr. Feldman, for your wonderful book

This is one of the finest presidential biographies I have read. Not only does Feldman do a wonderful job of characterizing Madison's personality and motivations while cataloging his major achievements, he makes the entire period and the figures of it incredibly real and relatable. The events are all clearly explained and easy to follow.

We watched the Brian Lamb Q&A TV Show with Noah Feldman and then were sold on his book. It is wonderful, informative, and truly makes the main character James Madison come alive. He is now moving into first place, ahead of T Jefferson, as our favorite Founding Father. What a great man...wish they made them like him nowadays!

It discusses the animal's psychology, its social nature, and its special housing and handling needs and systems. It details food and water requirements, and unique health and safety concerns. Though it stops short of providing processing details, it does describe the potential products from each animal, and how long it takes to get an animal to a suitable weight for processing. A Q&A section covers frequent concerns, and a summation describes what life is like living with that particular animal.Although I was content to merely imagine life with farm animals, after reading this book, I'm actively considering inviting a few goats or chickens into our lives. I found it that inspiring and informative.

beyond the pretty pictures.. informative tome that will actually include your kids as well as give you, the adults, information to ensure successful farming.Please note - most "farming books"either are focused on "pretty" or go directly to "adult implementation". this book bridges the gap and is usable to both generation.

As a farming, homeschooling mom, I found this an amazing resource for on-the-farm-learning, for myself and my kids. The book is well organized by each animal type and gives the characteristics of each animal, what to watch/prepare for each species, and the benefits of each. With eye-catching photos and diagrams, this book draws in the smallest of children, while filled with information for older kids and adults, as well. My own children (ages 1 to 12) love to enjoy the book together. My youngest is learning animal names and sounds, while my oldest tells me why one of our animals is displaying an odd behavior, all after reading this book! And I love Barnyard Kids! This book has brought the beauty of farming back to our farm. Through Ms. Rudick's amazing photos, I'm seeing our own animals and our land with refreshed perception.Whether you're a farmer, or a parent/grandparent/aunt or uncle, this is an amazing book for any child or family. It teaches kids about farming, animals, and where their food should come from. We all need to reconnect with the land and the true value of animals, and this book is a great means to do so!

Great book with terrific pictures. Bought it for my young nieces and nephews and my 14 year old wanted it! While everything can be found on the web these days it's nice to have a basic reference book for kids to look at and read.

I absolutely LOVE this book! I bought it to read together with my 4 young daughters! It is full of helpful information and tips. If you are looking for a book that will be your "go to" book about farm animals and helping your children learn about them, this is your book! Also, the pictures are stunning! My 4 year old loves looking at pictures of farm animals, and this book goes with us when we are out an about as the pictures in it make her smile and remind her of her own chickens. It even keeps her entertained in church. We have chickens now, but this book makes me want to try other barnyard animals too! I will be purchasing a few more copies for my friends and family!

Barnyard Kids: A Family Guide for Raising AnimalsFrom picture book to educational guide this book is absolutely delightful. Whether you're reading it with your kids or for your own pleasure there is something in here for "kids" of all ages. Beautiful photographs and informative illustrations lend themselves perfectly to the informative and often witty prose crafted by author Dina Rudick. This book is also gorgeously designed - the paper, the typeface used, the layout of the photos and illustrations! I bought two - one for the kids and one for coffee table to have a keepsake (because this book is sure to be a family favorite for years to come!)

A wonderful book to enjoy with your grandchildren. The pictures are wonderful and the text is well done. I would recomend this for any child's reading pleasure.
