Before our trip to Poland I purchased this book and the DK Eyewitness Travel Guide and the Lonely Planet Poland Country Guide. I found the Rick Steve's "Snapshot" book to be the most engaging, beginning with the history of this proud people, who managed to keep their identity in spite of being overrun, vanquished, and their country divided and incorporated into three "neighbors". The short sections on the currrency and language proved helpful. The highlights rating system for the three cities was helpful, even on our guided tour, when we had time on our own to do some exploring. Small facts of interest were shared with our group, who were curious where I had read that, since they hadn't found that in the other books. Overall, I thought I was well prepared to see the sights with the insights I had gained from this book.

My brother and I recently took a trip to Poland. This book was helpful in exploring the three cities, and it gave useful details about Polish culture and language. We had a good foundation by reading this book before our trip, and it was an important resource throughout our trip. The book was easy to use, both in the hard copy and with the on-line version. My only suggestion is that I hope Rick Steves writes a guide that includes all of Poland. It was a wonderful country to visit, and I hope to go back in the future.

Excellent guidebook for Warsaw. Unfortunately I can't comment on the other two cities included as I wasn't able to get to them in my brief visit. The guidebook was perfect for a quick business trip to Warsaw to maximize my time in Warsaw when not in the office. It is up to date, accurate, and VERY concise in it's self-guided tour instructions. I not only recommend buying it to plan your trip, but keep it with you while out and about as it was incredibly useful.

I've always relied on Steves' travel books. This one is quite heavy on history but that may due to the cities covered. Could use more on culture and food. Not sure why he refuses to use more exact maps but this seems to be one of his trademarks which I'm not fond of.

My girlfriend and I traveled to Krakow for vacation and this guide was a big help in orienting us with all the history and sites. I had been to Krakow a couple times before and never realized everything that was before me. The Old Town guide in particular was very useful and precise. I definitely recommend this book to anyone traveling there. However, one thing to note is that it is more geared to touring the town as a tourist and getting acquainted to the culture, so if you want to explore more of the nightlife and mix with the local (younger) students, this misses that mark. But that is what I expected and for what it is, it is perfect.

I hope to travel to Poland one day, God willing, as I am Polish and would like to see where my grandparents came from. Rick Steves does a thorough job of presenting all aspects of such a trip. Allows one to prepare well.

I can't believe that I almost didn't purchase this book before spending two weeks in Krakow. I had spent some time looking at TripAdvisor and figured those reviews would be enough. WRONG! This book was incredibly helpful. We were traveling with a baby, and found that Rick Steves' off-the-beaten path recommendations were great for avoiding crowds and long lines (thus avoiding baby meltdowns), and also gave us some great free self-guided tours to do (like the castle Wawel) so that we didn't buy pricey tour tickets that we would have to then bail on if baby got fussy. I can't thank Rick Steves enough :)

I went to Krakow and used this book for the walk around the city, it is absolutley great, you never get lost, you go everywhere around Krakow and do not miss anything important to see. I have done a lot of Rick Steves recommended walks and all of them have been great, I highly recommend this tourists books.

I'm not a huge fan of Lord John. In fact, his increased participation in the latest novels, along with William the Whiner, has somewhat lessened my enjoyment of them. However, this book strikes just the right balance with him if all you're interested in is a new Outlander book to help you through the mid-novel drought.Because, in many ways, this is what we have here - another Outlander novel, and a good one at that. In feeling, it's very reminiscent of Voyager, during the period of which it takes place. Finishing it actually led me to pick up Voyager again, partly to reorient myself vis-a-vis the storyline, but also because it just felt like the same book.I'm not a reader of the John's series, so I can't tell you if you should buy this for him. But I can tell you that if you were looking for Outlander, when you've run out of Outlander, look no further. Here's a whole new novel for you. A bit short, yeah, but new, good, and very satisfying.

ABSOLUTLY AMAZING STORY!! I could barely put this book down. It is a Stand Alone in the LJG series but if you have read The Outlander series it will fill in a lot of gaps of the Storylines or characters that were left hanging. Plus I got my Jamie Fraser Fix. I Love the thought of Jamie Fraser and I hope there is someone out there in the real world like him!! I have No idea why it took me so long to read The Scottish Prisoner. I had read all the Outlander Books many years past and many times but this was my first LJG series book and I loved it. I didn't even miss Claire!! The story is about the life of LJG and the Life of Jamie Fraser after he was sent to Helwater and his day to day life with his son William/ Willie the very young Earl of Elsmere it was just endearing!! I Loved it. Its a Keeper for future re reads. I Highly Recommend The Scottish Prisoner for you reading Enjoyment!!

I did love it...was in a near panic attack after finishing the last Outlander book... and there wont be another for several years....so having a little more with this book and some of the novellas, was just what I needed to ease out and land lightly into a world without Outlander. I would give 4 3/4 stars if possible, but it won't let you. The reason for less than five...it's just not the same without Claire. Also the ending, I was expecting more, but it is very hard to end books I know! Gabaldon is always great though. Taking a little break from Lord John Grey and reading something else, but will pick it up again and read the rest of them, while eagerly awaiting Outlander Book 9!

FINAL DECISION: More Jamie than Lord John, this story is a type of buddy book with John and Jamie having to work together to solve a mystery involving a possible Jacobite group. I loved seeing Jamie for an extended period even though my heart hurt for him missing Claire.THE STORY: This book takes place in the time period covered by VOYAGER (and there are spoilers). Here Lord John Grey finds himself the recipient of a mysterious message written in the Scottish language. He reluctantly realizes that Jamie might be able to translate the message. (The two have had a serious falling out during an earlier Lord John story.) Jamie is suffering from the loss of Claire but watching over his illegitimate and unacknowledged son. But he is also approached with echoes from the past by Irish remnants of the Rising. These events send Jamie and John Grey on an adventure to discover the truth of what is happening.OPINION: This is my favorite of the Lord John series, but it feels closest to Outlander because of Jamie's presence. But the reason that I like this as a Lord John book is because Lord John is best when he is interacting with Jamie and not just thinking about him.This book definitely takes it shape from the Lord John Grey series. It is a mystery that John goes to investigate. Here, because Jamie is such a central character, we get more of the interaction between John and Jamie. Their relationship is strained but this book is part of their journey to becoming friends again -- and this time a more honest friendship.I really enjoyed the story which was political drama, a roadtrip adventure, historical download and a story of unrequited love all in one. I also enjoyed getting to see more of John's brother and sister in law (a couple I enjoyed in their own story).This book enhanced my Outlander understanding and also managed to be the best example of the Lord John books.WORTH MENTIONING: This novel is told by alternating Jamie's story and Lord John's story as the stories overlap. It takes place in the space of when Jamie and Claire are apart VOYAGER.CONNECTED BOOKS: THE SCOTTISH PRISONER is the third book in the Lord John Grey series. This series is a spinoff of the Outlander series. While it is not necessary to have read the other books in the Lord John Grey series to read this book, I believe it is necessary to read VOYAGER to appreciate this book.STAR RATING: I give this book 4 stars.

I fell in love with Lord John when he was Warden in the prison at Ardsmuir. He demonstrated a keen sense of humour as well as intelligence at least equal to Jamie's. This book goes between the pages of Voyager and provides the reader with more of who Lord John is, and his deep, abiding love and friendship for Jamie. Certainly a must read!

Did not disappoint. I loved combining Lord John and Jamie and it filled in some of the time when he was at Hellwater. I admit I read this book first without reading the other Lord John novella's and works because it did contain Jamie too and I time I wanted to hear more about. It can stand alone without the others, but it may give away some spoilers for the prior works. Still, since I've read all eight Outlander books, I don't consider that a huge problem. I really like Lord John and his family which are heavily involved in the Outlander book 8. I also liked that this was more a normal size novel. Long enough for several good twists and turns, but not a marathon read.

Love it. Great reading. Kano was a great educator and had wonderful vision of his judo. It is sad to see judo drifting away from his philosophys and constructing mostly on spot.The book is not about judo techniques but about judo philosophy and judo values outside the dojo.Highly recommended specialy for judo coaches and instructors.

Whenever I promote someone to black belt - I give this book as a gift so that the person will come closer to the meaning and origins of Kodokan Judo.

The founder of judo tells how to apply the principles of judo to everyday life with the goal of self-perfection for the benefit of society. Kano is a martial artist, philospher, and an esteemed educator. This is his legacy and one of the most important books I have read.

Essential reading for those interested in the roots of jiu-jitsu and of course judo. His philosophies are surprisingly optimistic about how this art can affect society, but it is a refreshing vision to share with the world. I feel I've grown as a martial artists by reading this book.

This book gives great insight into Kano Jigoro's mind. It speak about the philosophy of Judo beyond the aspects of martial arts. One should train their mind as well as their body to be a complete individual and this book helps teach that. I know I've got a cross-age winner when I'm reading to my five year old and my eleven year old ends up parked on the couch next to us, listening.The book tells the story of Apollo 13, relating the story with a good dollop of the funny and gross to keep the kids entertained (floating vomit, bags of urine, that sort of thing). The art is a goofy, engaging, comic style. At about 30 jam-packed pages, there's too much here for a read-aloud during a single team meeting, but it'd be a solid book to loan out to FLL Jr or FLL team members of any age. (Reading level: Guided Reading R, IG880L.) There's a lot of science and history, with a big focus on what it was like to be a human in space, which could be very useful for teams this year.So, now on to the problem: Of course all the Apollo 13 astronauts are white men. That's a fundamental challenge in teaching kids about early space travel. You get lots of white men, and indeed the historical photos of mission control show a sea of white men. But, given this book is illustrated, I found myself wishing the illustrator had snuck in a couple of women or minorities in the drawings of the ground crew and mission control.Hidden Figures briefly mentions the participation of Katherine Johnson (a woman of color) in calculations of the lunar module return (in successful Apollo missions) and in a way to navigate without the computers that was used on Apollo 13. A couple sidebars might have addressed the diversity issue.If you have a recommendation for a kids' book that shows a little bit of diversity in early space history, please tell me! I'm still looking....One minor annoyance, unlikely to bother anyone but an adult scientist: it is clear that the person doing the conversions from km to miles didn't really think about significant figures. For example: "On April 13th, Apollo 13 is 204,431 miles (329,000 km) away from Earth." Yeah, no, that should be 204,000 miles.
