Kevin Hardman has done a wonder here. He's created a superhero equipped with a ridiculous smörgasbord of powers, but, instead of making him bland and boring like Superman, he compels us to invest in him. Maybe it helps that Kid Sensation is only 16 years old, so that when we meet him, he's still very much the callow youth, and we'll never mind that he's undergone years of training under the tutelage of his mom and grandpa, both of whom had donned the cape and cowl back in their day. And maybe it's because, as the story opens, the notorious Kid Sensation - or John Indigo Morrison Carrow or "Jim" (initials of his first three names) - has got something to prove, seeing as how he still smarts from a time two years ago in which he'd participated in the annual try-out to join the teen branch of the world's preeminent superhero group, the Alpha League... with catastrophic results. You know it's catastrophic when it lands you your own Wanted poster. To this day, the world still talks about the Kid Sensation debacle. That crap experience had made Kid Sensation go to ground; the public hadn't seen him since. But a turn of events ends Jim's self-imposed exile and allows him a second shot at his dream. If only he could get along with his potential teammates. If only he could suss out who's been stalking him. And if only he could fend off an imposing secret assembly of villains that sees him as the one major snag to their achieving global domination.I'm kicking myself for not having come across Kevin Hardman's books before. I stumbled across SENSATION (Kid Sensation #1), tore thru it in half a day, and went on to binge-read the rest in the series. I love how Hardman sets up the first book, those neat little touches he layed in that set up Kid Sensation as this teen of mystery to the world at large and even to the metahuman community. But the readers get to know Jim as a likable guy. I love that he gets such loving support from his family; his mom and gramps are really cool people (she pens bestselling superhero romances; he's a world class telepath). As you'll see in further books, Kid Sensation doesn't shy from taking on all comers. And, because of his versatile power set, he usually ends up at least giving as good as he gets. There always lurks that concern that the kid may just be too powerful - it's why Superman just isn't as exciting as Batman - except that this is clearly a coming-of-age story. And the kid is so damn engaging that you can't help but root for him. Too, Hardman surrounds him with an interesting cast: his folks, his friends, his colleagues, all of whom tend to keep him grounded. On a larger scale, the writer fleshes out the Kid's universe with exceptional worldbuilding. No, I don't mean that Hardman introduces these revolutionary concepts. It's essentially the same old tropes. But he's a really good writer, really good at myth-making, and he makes the old and routine seem fresh and interesting. As for the other two books in this bundle:In MUTATION (Kid Sensation #2), as Jim readies to attend the Academy, he's approached by a covert government agency that insists he work for them. Jim's nascent superhero career seems off to a rocky start, especially once students at the otherdimensional Academy are exposed to an infectious virus that mutates their meta-powers, rendering them uncontrollable. Cut off from Earth and from outside help, Jim and his ragtag bunch of new friends are the only ones left to root out the source of the virus... but not if that nutjob with the power of the sun - and her cohorts - can help it.INFILTRATION (Kid Sensation #3) finds Kid Sensation still trying to get a handle on his superhero and civilian lives. It ain't so easy, juggling his relationships. He's still tight with his girlfriend, Electra, but why is he suddenly so fascinated with this other superheroine? And then there's his estranged superhero father who wants to make up for lost time. And what's this noise about a rivalry that he'd never before heard of between him and this other teen super, Dynamo? The perception is real enough that when the capes' public relations dept. decided to arrange a good-will exhibition to garner more positive press, the main event promoted pits Dynamo and Kid Sensation in a "friendly" one-on-one competition. On the crime-fighting front, what's up with the mysterious assault on his father, the world's mightiest super? Seemed a waste of time because his dad is that badass. Unless it was a test. There's rumor of a terrifying unknown weapon what's about to be employed by an unknown agency - and not even the Alpha League can stand up to it. It's up to Kid Sensation, with his diverse catalog of abilities, to infiltrate the shadowy circle of big bads lest villainy subjugates the world and the Kid's relationship issues are made moot. So, there. If you're hankering for good stories with a superhero theme, give Kevin Hardman's stuff a try. You'll find that Kid Sensation is very relatable but certainly not perfect. Sometimes, he's a hotheaded cuss. Sometimes, he can be full of himself. But he's a kid that continues to develop as a hero and as a three-dimensional character.Other recommended superhero books:- Marion G. I really enjoyed this tree of a books. The voice actor does an exceptional job of conveying the author story. It also came at a great price so who could pass by pass that. Look forward to more compilations in the future by this author and voice actor.
This teenager has won the super power genetic lottery. All sorts of powers, and he regularly develops new ones. Apart form saving the world in all 3 books, he meets his estranged father, defeats his psycho half brother, goes to super school and gets himself a girlfriend. Not a bad series, easy reading for young adults.
This is not classic literature but light 'science' fiction. I read the kindle version and immediately ordered the next books in the series. This is a novel version of the comic books I had available as I was growing up.
Hardman's protagonist is overpowered and arrogant which could be used to create interesting stories in more competent hands. In all of these books, the hero's peril only lasts as long as it takes Hardman to grow bored with the situation at which point 'Kid Sensation' suddenly remembers that he can teleport/has super-speed/can fly/can turn invisible/can become intangible/has telepathy/is part-alien/is a genius (yes, he can do/is ALL of these!) and the situation is instantly resolved. He creates a "Super Hero High School" which again could be used to tell interesting stories and then tosses the concept out in the same book. There is no back story developed on the majority of characters. He introduces villains whose evil exploits stretch back years (Again, no back story, just a blurb telling us that these villains have been around a long time) and are evidently unstoppable only because they hadn't decided to take on Kid Sensation yet.He introduces dozens of teen super-heroes who spend their time waiting for Kid Sensation to save the day.The adult superheroes in these books are barely present which is sad because they are far more interesting characters than the main character is.He creates a Batman-like mentor for his hero and spends the majority of the time having the mentor sit in a lab tinkering with things. Kid Sensation's mother and grandfather are former super-heroes who seem to exist only to make sandwiches, loan him the car, and remind him how awesome he is.The one bright moment in the series is the "Battle of the Network Stars" competition between Kid Sensation and fellow teen super-hero Dynamo which has them vying to be the de facto leader of the new generation of heroes. Which is only a competition because Kid Sensation magnanimously decides not to use most of his powers which then leads Dynamo to accept Kid Sensation for how awesome he is.If you're looking for a super-hero series with depth and great character development, read Larry Corriea's "Grimnoir Chronicles" series. The Kid Sensation series will just annoy you.
