Just got it. Love it.Only had part of this story in various "Heavy Metals"Seems like a -re-mastered version - but hey, still love it.Advise getting this for any munchkin kid who only had a few Heavy Metals and the missing parts of the story were like Magic but didn't dare ask the parents to order or pay Comic Book Guy $300 an issue (when the "Comic Book Boom" hit) and yes while you can ebay reading copies cheaply, even a few vintage still on the HM website, cool to have these works in such a format! Thanks again, Titan Comics, for the re-print and completing childhood memories. Going to enjoy re-absorbing the story like fine wine and cheese, which I don't usually take but will likely for exception!
This 1986 Catalan Communications trade paperback compiles all the English-translation episodes of the 'Exterminator 17' comic serialized in 'Heavy Metal' magazine in 1978 - 1979. In this compilation, the comic's original black-and-white art is given color formatting by Dave Brown. When I picked up and read my very first issue of 'Heavy Metal' in November, 1978, it was my first introduction to European styles of comic book artwork, and I found 'Exterminator 17' to be one of the most offbeat such comics I’d ever seen. This mainly was due to Bilal's artwork, which was extremely detailed and meticulous, but at the same time, distinctive in its sensibility. The festoonings and graticules and linework gave each image a cluttered, 'organic' quality, while the incorporation of stains, blotches, chips, gouges and smears on the bulkheads of the spaceships, and the clothing of the characters, added a visual element of decay and entropy - things simply not encountered in American comic book art.The plot of 'Exterminator 17' also has its own offbeat sensibility that meshes well with the artwork (although in its later stages, the narrative undergoes some confusing jumps and shifts that suggest that somewhere along the way, some pages were dropped from final production).Whether you're an old-school 'Heavy Metal' fan seeking nostalgia, or a contemporary fan of graphic art who likes Bilal's distinctive artwork, then 'Exterminator 17' is well worth picking up.[Note that Humanoids published a hardcover edition of this compilation, in English, in 2002. Humanoids also released a three-issue sequel, titled 'La Trilogy D’Ellis' ('The Ellis Trilogy'), from 2003 - 2008, which, unfortunately, has not been released in English.]
I remember this when it first came out in Heavy Metal magazine. Cannot find any of those old magazines as we moved too much. it was and still is of some interest to those of us that like the analog format.
My favorite line"The void itself was created."Great illustrations and storytelling. If you like Star wars check this out.
I own this story in multiple formats, including a cruddy digitally colored version that was released a few years back. I was curious why this was so expensive and why the page count was so high. I flipped through it at a local bookstore and was very disappointed. The book is mostly extra content that was done without Bilal. It's bad enough his original art was muddied (same terrible digital job from that book I mentioned) but then you are paying $40 on a book mostly loaded with content by a cartoonist unknown by pretty much anyone interested in Bilal's work. I am a huge fan of his work and consider him a major influence on my own cartooning. I will no doubt purchase any other Bilal re-issues that Humanoids has lined up including the "Monster" book next year. But this..? This is a hard pass.
