About the Author

Donald R. Prothero has taught paleontology and geology for almost four decades. He is adjunct professor of geological sciences at California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, adjunct professor of geology at Pierce College, and research associate in vertebrate paleontology at the Natural History Museum of Los Angeles County. His Columbia University Press books include Bringing Fossils to Life: An Introduction to Paleobiology (third edition, 2013); The Story of Life in 25 Fossils: Tales of Intrepid Fossil Hunters and the Wonders of Evolution (2015); and Evolution: What the Fossils Say and Why It Matters (second edition, 2017).

This excellent book explains complex ideas clearly without sacrificing accuracy. Very well written and illustrated. Highly recommend this book and it’s topics.

Wonderful read. The History of the Earth in 25 Rocks is a heck of a lot of fun to read, even though some of the chapters don’t have an actual rock specimen, like the chapter on Transform Faults. The book is really more about the history of geology and the growth of our understanding about it. It includes delightful stories about the people who helped figure it out. Some of which even I didn’t know (MIT Biology/Math with minor Geology, 1975 - so I did have a chance to meet some of the people he talks about.). The only caveat is Mr. Prothero sometimes needs an editor to check his math. (E.g. 10 miles per second is 36,000 miles per hour.). Otherwise great fun, inspiring, informative. Well done.

The book tells some of the greatest geologic stories in Earth history. Don Prothero is an excellent historian as well as a super geologist. His research is impeccable. Great book for armchair geologists or pros.

Very well written. I am a professional geological engineer and I loved it. Great job.

The backstories, mini biographies of the scientists, were great. I wish there were a few more chapters. I'll read the book again.

Enjoyed reading this immensely. Wonderful, informative and thought-provoking summaries of a vast body of geological research written for anyone with even a casual interest in the earth sciences. Should be part of any middle and high school science curriculum. This old lady found it fascinating!

The book gives the reader a great feel for the evolution of the earth

Have had this author’s book on fossils for years and am just reading this one now but enjoying just as much. Great for any science teacher, but clear enough for anyone- he is talented at explaining science and methods.
