Got this for my 52 year old wife in her 2+ year of BSN program. She initially gave it a 4 but had no reason not to give it a 5. She's happy with the way the author "dumbed everything down" and uses it for reference when she struggles. Her current grade is a 93 and math isn't her strong point...good stuff!
Daughter needed to take the CLEP College Algebra exam. She had taken up to CC Math3 or Algebra 2 by Sophomore year of high school, and took some pre calc, but was in AP Stat this year. She picked up the book about two weeks ago and worked daily to get through it. She found it easy to understand and actually learned some concepts that were poorly taught to her the first time around. She said it did a good job of explaining concepts step by step. She passed the test with a higher score than needed. She wishes she would have had it earlier in high school and thinks it would be helpful for both high school and preparation for CLEP.
I decided to go back to school to get a second Bachelor's degree. It has been 30+ years since I last took a math class. The book has a good mix of explanation, examples and sample problems. Unlike the "dummies" books it does not waste your time by telling you cute stories or jokes. The book gave me confidence and helped me get an A in the class.
So, I took my first quiz for chapter one, then went to the table of contents to find the location of the correct answers: 483. Yay! Except I flip to the back and the last page is 481. The book looks complete, in that nothing is torn out and the original binding is intact. But no answers! In fact, the final page is the traditional blank page. Thus, I have had to consult the internet to check my work, which is mildly irritating since I purchased a paper book to avoid the internet! Maybe my book is an outlier, and others have purchased a complete edition. As for the rest of the content—the explanations are decent. I just wish the answers were also demystified!
I bought this as a review of college algebra, that I took a few years back. The subject material is organized well, and has good practice problems. My one complaint, is that had I not already taken college algebra in the past, I am not sure that the explanations in this book would have been adequate enough for me to fully understand the material presented.
I am finding this book to be an excellent resource for reviewing the concepts of college algebra. Concise, step-by-step instructions of how to solve problems is provided. Also, plenty of practice problems with detailed solutions are provided. Evert chapter has a quiz for testing your knowledge with answers at the back. Unfortunately, detailed solutions of quiz problems are not provided.
Originally, I couldn't figure out what the difference between this book and her other title, "Algebra, Demystified" was. I personally own this one, and examined the the other title in order to help out other shoppers.The first title, Algebra Demystified : A Self Teaching Guide (Demystified) is simply what I would have called "Algebra I." Many people take it in high school, but many did not- I am one of those people! If you've never taken algebra, I recommend it.Now for this book, College Algebra Demystified. It assumes you have already taken a basic Algebra I course, and right on page 1 it starts with a great big quadratic equation and shows you how to do the dreaded "Complete the Square." The great part was, the author broke it into little parts and I did it one step at a time. When I finished Chapter One, I was absolutely surprised that I now considered this form of equation solving to be EASY!!! I couldn't believe it. When I originally took an Algebra class years ago in college, I remember bursting into tears trying to figure it out. After her explanation and thorough practice sections, I am not breaking out into a sweat (literally).My only negative feeling is that it doesn't seem to cover all aspects of everything I have found to be taught in my College Algebra class in college. Some classes require basic Trig to be taught, and if you're in that situation you'll have to look somewhere other than this book. For pure algebra and its concepts, this book (and the other one) make a great combo.
I am currently enrolled in College Algebra after not taking courses in years. This book has been a great tool in helping me understand what my instructor teaches in class. It's a great resource guide. They give you multiple examples to help you understand the solutions for the problems. I highly recommend this book for anyone who has not taken college courses in a long time and decided to go back to and take college algebra. 😅
