About the Author

Sarah Walsh is a Kansas-based artist and illustrator. She's inspired by animals, magical creatures, coffee, music, a good story, her friends and family, bravery, vintage children's books, folk art, and mid-century anything. Sarah received her BFA in graphic design from the College of Saint Rose in Albany, New York, where she grew up. She spent several years working as an in-house designer and illustrator for Hallmark before branching out on her own and joining Lilla Rogers Studio, which currently represents her. I like the concept of this book, but not the execution. The art is great but the book layout is a huge disappointment. There are 10 pages of instructions for one image, and this is carried out throughout the book. This seems like a great deal of wasted space in the book that could hav been filled with more content or illustration.I was also expecting tips on what to look for to select details or parts of a person to create a good image, what this book is though is very detailed steps to copy the exact image on the page. The image on the cover isn’t even one there are instructions for.There is some nice info on using gouache and using other mediums in the same artwork.

Playful Painting: People is a new inspiration and tutorial book from Sarah Walsh. Released 7th August 2018 by Quarto publishing's Walter Foster imprint, it's 144 pages and available in softbound/paperback format.I love crafting and painting, drawing, fibrecrafts and creative hobbies in general. I am not a gifted representational painter and this has bothered me a fair bit over the years. I am completely convinced that generally people (me!) who learn the right techniques can draw and paint to a satisfying level. I've been told that it's a matter of seeing and visualizing and for some reason between my optic nerves and the peripheral nerves controlling my fingers something vital gets lost.Anyhow, this book is a lovely, lighthearted look at recognizable representational painting with people as the subject. In other words, how to get a likeness on the paper which other people can recognize as the person you intended to paint.This tutorial book gives step by step instructions (with illustrations) for 18 portraits including Lucille Ball & Desi Arnaz, Frida Kahlo, Louis Armstrong and more, along with more generic subjects like 'ad man', 'hipster guy', and 'girl with flowers in her hair'.The author has a penchant for gouache, but gives general tips on the use of color and shading, and the techniques can easily be adapted for other media. The emphasis here is on lightening up and having fun with the process (see the cover art). There is no hyperrealism here.This book is a fun antidote for the would-be artist who is afraid to put pen to paper. There is a lot of info and encouragement here. What a fun and informative book! I enjoyed this book immensely, and found a great deal of artful inspiration and tips. The artwork and illustrations are lovely and colorful, with such a cheerful whimsy to them. Tutorials are clear and descriptive, and the subjects of each tutorial are perfect--wonderful, charismatic individuals who lend themselves well to be the subjects of portraits for artists of all levels. So enjoyable!! Definitely a book I'd recommend!! Please note that I received a free electronic copy of this book from the publisher, via NetGalley. I was not required to write a review of any kind. I was very excited to see this book on NetGalley - "Playful Painting: People" by Sarah Walsh was a treat to look at. The book would likely be best suited for beginners or intermediate artists as the art style is something that can be achieved by someone without much experience. Sarah takes it up a notch by giving a great step by step tutorial on how to produce images (like a grown-up Ed Emberley drawing book). I got an ARC of this book.So I have some pretty big issues with gay relationships in manga. They tend to be over the top when it comes to dramatics, rape being normalized/romanticized, and a ton of other issues. This manga doesn't do most of my issues, so I am impressed.The art is great. Christian ages wonderfully in the book. He starts as a kid and by the end he is in college or high school. There is mention of Stanford so I am thinking college. The way he aged and was still recognizable was wonderful. I am always impressed when an artist can age a character in a realistic way. However, Daniel's character didn't really age. I don't get why he doesn't appear older at all by the end. He just seems more stiff. The age gap was a bit problematic. Christian was much too young to be staring in a romance when the book started. It was a cute mentor/mentee sort of relationship, but it got really unhealthy really quick. So while I wanted to ship it, I couldn't ship it physically. There was too much room for grooming and it gave me really negative vibes. The adult side of the romance was a bit forced. If this had been multiple volumes, the story would have been more fleshed out. The characters were very much flat. There wasn't time to really make them whole and to give this the heat it really needed. I have seen shorter pieces that were able to be perfect. So I think the author needed more space to tell this story. Some stories can be told with less pages, this one to really have an impact and be great would need more. So while this story avoids the idea that rape is romantic and the only way that two males can have sex, I was still disappointed that there was a fake sexual assault situation set up. There was so much jealousy and bad intentions. It was just a super unhealthy relationship. So I wanted to ship it, because what else is the point of a romance, but I couldn't. There was just so much standing in the way of me caring or wanting the relationship to happen.

I have to admit I am a grown up who bought this book for myself to read. I am a big fan of the Miss Perigrine's Home for Pecular Children series and this was a recomended for you selection I decided to give a shot. It's an ok story, the idea of the haunted school/old asylum is a little played out & this brought nothing new to the genre. I could see younger teens & preteens enjoying it & getting a good scare or two from it.

This is not a book just for young adults! Although the main characters are all balancing on the precipice of leaping from high school to college, anyone who has made that interesting radical change in lifestyle will be able to identify with them. In this story three gifted high school students meet at a summer pre-college program targeted to their intellect. All of them carry their "geekness" into the program and manage to blend together in spite of their differing appearances and personalities. They learned to hide their quirks in high school by wearing certain costumes and assuming specific mannerisms, but it doesn't take the three of them long to discover that they deeply care for each other.The main antagonist in this story is Brookline, a shuttered psychiatric hospital turned into a dormitory for students attending summer courses at the college. It turns out that Brookline is an old, crumbling, and imposing building that not even a fresh coat of paint and extensive landscaping can improve. It is now on the state's list of historical sites and will be preserved in all of its present ugliness. Brookline is one of the "old school" asylums where unmentionable experiments were conducted on patients deemed to be incurable, an old and dark building of secrets too horrific to once again see the light of day. An initial short exploration of an "off limits" section by our three geeks yields some interesting clues to the past worth investigating. And so the story begins.Madeleine Roux has written an interesting thriller that draws you in as soon as you see the book cover. On the dark cover stands a young lady slightly out of focus who looks like she might be moving in the whirling dervish motions currently favored in horror films. The end papers are black, the interior pages feature several black and white photos of actual asylums, and the chapter markings are all dark and dreary. The book's cover is extremely well done and draws you to it like a magnet. All of the interior photos reinforce the readers' perception of what insane asylums actually look like, complete with pictures of patients, staff, and operating theater. All-in-all a great marketing package.While the book is listed at being 320 pages long, the actual story is double-spaced and actually occupies about 242 pages. The rest is photos, chapter markers, acknowledgements, and indices. While is is a pretty quick read, the additional inclusions help to reinforce the atmosphere of the story. The writing is pretty tight and moves along nicely, but things get a little bit off balance and busy at the end. A great build up somehow manages to turn into a somewhat messy ending. And that's really too bad.

Asylum is a chilling, creeptastic novel about Dan, a high school student attending a summer program for gifted students at a college in New Hampshire. The college used to be an asylum, and parts of the basement still hosts the old chambers. Dan is geeky and a bit of a loner, so he’s thrilled to meet gorgeous, outgoing Abby, and her friend, Jordan. The three of them form a close bond, and they even take some classes together. But one night they go exploring in the basement of the asylum, and that’s when things start to go wrong.Dan is tormented by nightmares, people get hurt, and the three of them receive strange messages that could be from the beyond. On top of that, we see a glimpse of Dan’s past, his visits to a therapist, and some reasons are alluded to, but unfortunately never fully explained.The creepiness is high in this one, and the author does a great job describing the creepier scenes. However, the characters were problematic. Dan has so many secrets shrouding his past it’s difficult to connect to him. For a large part of the book, I thought he would be an unrealiable narrator, and this also kept me distant from him, but at the same time, heightened the mystery. Jordan and Abby felt a little underdeveloped, and their behavior was all over the place – some thanks to the asylum, some of it seemingly random.I felt like a lot of things weren’t explained yet and some issues could’ve been explored further, but overall, I had a fantastic time reading this. Plus, the photographs gave the book a nice touch.

About the Author

Sandra Cabot is the medical and executive director of the Australian National Health Advisory Service. She graduated with honors in medicine and surgery from the University of Adelaide in South Australia in 1975. As part of her extracurricular medical training, she studied herbal medicine and nutritional medicine. Dr. Cabot began her medical career in 1980 as an obstetrician-gynecologist and practiced in Sydney Australia. During the mid 1980s she spent considerable time working as a volunteer doctor at the Leyman hospital, which was the largest missionary hospital in India. Her first book, titled Women's Health, was an authoritative holistic health guide. Subsequently she wrote several more groundbreaking books including The Liver Cleansing Diet, which has sold well over two million copies worldwide. She has written twenty-two other health titles.

I have almost all of Sandra Cabot's books. Disappointed with this one as it is way too general. The information in the book could be obtained via online research. Disappointed with the book.

This book brings together most of the current thinking about prevention of dementia and Alzheimer's and puts it together in an easy to read format. Of course, none of it is totally new, but the reasons for both physical and mental exercise and good nutrition for helping the brain and perhaps slowing down the effects of dementia are well explained. There is a very good section at the end of the book full of useful advice for carers. My only slight reservation is that this book may give false hope to people already well along the path of Alzheimer's, but most of the advice would be valuable for any of us at any age who want to keep our brains healthy for as long as possible.
