I read and enjoy steampunk, but sometimes I'm not in the mood, (and expect a young reader might not be in the mood), for lovingly detailed descriptions and world building. You can get page after page of description of some clockwork contraption, or a whole chapter devoted to a tour of a steam powered engine room. That's not what you get here.Reeve is great at broad stroke world building. He creates the London traction city in a chapter or two. He shows us all of the levels, how it works, how people fit into it, and the larger world within which it operates, and he frames all of the major characters within the first 50 pages. After that we are off to the races on a high energy, twisty and marvelously colorful adventure. And this is a marvelous adventure. Our hero is a bit timid but finds the swashbuckler within. Our heroine is tough, smart, resourceful, and on a mission. This is a fine team. Around and through them we meet a memorable cast of colorful and compelling allies and villains. This is ripping stuff. Lots of running, hiding, lurking, escaping, fighting, and derring do. I was a bit surprised by the level of violence, and not cartoon violence, in the story, but that's treated as a serious consequence of dangerous times and this is still, after all, a dystopian world tale. So, I enjoyed this immensely and appreciated the high level of imagination and creative energy that went into building and then convincingly portraying this fascinating world.

The Story-Tom is a junior historian in the city of London. It is a thousand years since humanity almost destroyed itself in a sixty minute war, and now all cities are built on huge traction machines that roll over the earth and snatch up smaller traction cities.Tom is sent down to the guts to look for artifacts after London eats a mining town. While there he is surprised to see his idol, Valentine, head historian and archaeologist of London. Things turn bad when one of the mining town survivors charges Valentine and tries to kill him. Tom runs after the villain, amazed to see that it is a young woman with a scar down the side of her face and a missing eye.Through different means, they both end up expelled from the city and for the first time Tom finds himself on real ground. Together Tom and Hester try to find their way back to London, Hester to finish her murder and Tom just to get home. However, along the journey Tom learns the truth about his idol Valentine and the ugliness of living in a city eat city world. My Thoughts-This book scores points for originality. The idea of an entire city, as big as London, rolling around on traction wheels and getting their supplies by eating up lesser cities and stripping them bare, blows my mind. I honestly would not have been able to picture it if it hadn't been for the movie trailer. Whether it is in any way realistic is another story, but since this is a fantasy/dystopian novel, I'll let it roll.Let's talk about our main characters, there is actually a quad, Tom and Hester and then Katherine (Valentine's daughter) and Bevis (a junior engineer). Tom and Hester are working their way back to London, discovering flying airships and other mini cities along the way. They also learn of the resistance movement against traction cities. Katherine and Bevis both live in London. Katherine is disillusioned by facts she finds out about her father and Bevis knows the secrets of the engineers and the robots and deadly weapon that are being built. Together they try from within London to stop the insane mayor from destroying the world. The plot is full of twists and turns and as a reader I was eager to find out what the world was like that Hester and Tom lived in. It was also interesting to see technology from our current day have such an impact in the future. There is great tension and build up and the ending scenes are full of action. I enjoyed my ride through this novel. However, I felt as if something were missing. Tom and Hester are great characters, but there is nothing very special about them. I wanted there to be something that only Hester or Tom could accomplish that would save the city or world. Some type of hidden hero archetype or unknown skill that surfaces. I needed to feel that this same adventure could not have happened to any other two kids. So, overall I recommend this book for its originality and action and I'm giving it 4 stars!

I found out about this book after seeing a preview for the movie and doing a bit of research. The idea of a sci-fi adventure/intrigue with moving cities that need to "eat" other cities sounded like it would be a fascinating read.Sadly, I can't say that I found the story to be nearly as compelling as the idea of it. I can't really put a finger on why I'm not enthralled. The idea is there, the action is there, but I guess the characters fall a bit flat for me. I am finding the book interesting, but not strongly and I've already started to lose interest in any of the sequels. It's just missing the magic piece I guess.

Maybe I've come to expect too much from the likes of Orson Scott Card. I'm definitely NOT the Young Adult demographic I suppose this book is aimed at, but even if I were, I think I would have found this book uncaptivating. I love the idea, and really look forward to seeing the movie, but this book's treatment of the story felt insipid, lukewarm, unconvincing. If you want to get an idea what the upcoming movie is all about, maybe it's worth $6.I had a really hard time caring about any of the characters. Too many of them - even the apparent main characters - were just tropes and not really developed beyond those tropes. The author has a habit of making a character appear to be somewhat important, and then killing them off rather flippantly, and in a way that shows they were not really that important. After a while, I started thinking "Cool kid. Shouldn't really start rooting for him, because he's probably dead in 20 pages anyway."And nobody really mourned anyone that was killed off. They were just - gone.Without any spoilers, I was also bothered by the sudden character turnarounds several times - I don't think people change their core nature as readily as they were portrayed in this book. "Hello, my name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father prepare to die... oh, we're best friends now." Wait - what?I guess my review boils down to this: if you replaced all the character development in this book, I'd love the story.

We absolutely loved this book. We used both it and Mission Paris on a recent trip to France and Italy with our three kids, ages 11, 11 and 13. I was worried they may be too old for it but they weren't. Be sure to read in advance so you can do the 'Anytime Missions' at the end to do throughout your visit, and be sure to read the historical details as you go along. There were some 'bumps' in terms of thing being moved since the book was written, but that is part of the Scavenger Hunt experience. Most notably was the Uffizi - the Adoration of the Magi by Fabriano was moved to a special exhibit in the basement when we were there, and some of the pictures of Medici children had been moved to towards the end of the museum. But we had a great time using this book throughout our visit, and highly recommend it.

I really like the Mission to ... books. We took our 6 year old daughter to Paris and used one of these books. It was a little advanced for 6, however it did make her stop and look at different paintings, statues, architecture... which is what I wanted for her. We recently went on a trip to Italy and purchased the Mission Rome and Florence books. Both were good. She is now 7 so still a little advanced with the history but again it helped her stop and observe her surroundings more so than if we did not have the books. We were only in Florence for a few hours and only saw a few sights but still used our book. The tour guide we had was impressed with the book and helped us locate items on the hunt. As mentioned we also were in Rome for several days so we could really dive into the missions. My daughter loved the anytime missions in the Rome book. She was constantly pointing out things she learned in the book while out and about. I would highly recommend these books if traveling with children 6-12. I thing the books really help children slow down and observe whatever fantastic site or museum they are seeing.

We (unfortunately only) spent 24 hours in Florence, but I bought this book anyway so my 7 year old could learn something about what we were seeing. He loved it! It made our trip through Italy more enjoyable because he wanted to do and learn more. I even learned and saw things I had not seen before, even though this was my 4th trip to Florence.

We used this and the Mission Rome books on our recent trip to Italy. These books were amazing for the whole family!! My 5 (almost 6) year old daughter was so excited when she found things pictured in the books. She was actually studying the paintings! My husband and I got a lot out of them too. We would have never known/noticed some of the things listed. I highly recommend these books to anyone taking a child on an epic trip. One thing I would suggest to the writers/publisher would be to include a map of the locations. It wasn't a huge deal as we were using Google maps too but it would have been extremely helpful for planning.

This is a great book for exploring Florence. I liked the variety of activities, as well as how the history and culture of Florence are presented in an engaging way. It makes sightseeing with kids enjoyable.

Used this on our recent trip! The kids were so engaged at finding the details that we really got the most out of our time in Florence. HIGHLY recommend for anyone with kids (and we grownups loved it too!). There are things they learned from this book I missed the first time I was in florence.... and facts we learned the kids will never forget!

Excellent tool if you'd like your children to have a great experience in Florence.

Definitely made it a little more fun for kids to focus on the art, architecture, and history.

Trip: Psychedelics, Alienation, and Change, by Tao Lin

Review

“Trip is, if not a guide to self-help, a book about a person trying to be happier, in part by changing the kinds of drugs he uses. . .another theory of psychedelics emerges, which suggests that the most mystical revelations concern earthly themes: birth, death, and the body; family, friends, and love.” —Emily Witt, The New Yorker “Trip is a sane book about becoming sane, and Lin’s most valuable work to date.” —The Irish Times "[Lin does] an incredible job describing what a psychedelic experience feels like." —The Village Voice “An immediately significant entry in the literature of derangement and recovery.” —Vulture, “The Best Books of the Year (So Far)” “[Lin’s] best yet. . . . His rendering of tripping is perfect—better even. . .than Aldous Huxley’s elegant and evocative passages in The Doors of Perception, because Lin’s account conveys reverence and immersion without grandiosity. And that allows humor to leak through. . . . A joy to read.” —Bookforum “Addictive…. Strikingly vivid…. Lin coherently challenges the sense behind labeling psychedelics as controlled substances…. A kaleidoscopic fever dream of ideas, idolatry, and lots of drugs: uniquely produced and curiously intoxicating.” —Kirkus Reviews “An introspective work…. [Lin] chronicles his experiences with various psychedelic drugs in his first nonfiction book, weaving autobiography, history, and spiritual journey together to pose existential questions.” —Publishers Weekly “Trip is not only a book about drugs--it's about the condition of humans at this point in history, troublingly divorced from our natural capacity for awe by our chemically depleted bodies and minds. This book has changed how I understand myself on a cellular level. It's a superbly researched, moving, and formally inventive quest for re-enchantment, and Tao Lin's most compelling and profound book yet.” —Sheila Heti, author of How Should a Person Be? "Trip transcends the ranks of drug memoirs to give us a characteristically nontraditional, completely unique, hilarious, tender, and at times frightening departure from everyday life such as only Tao Lin can write. With fascinating specificity, it asks essential questions about the nature of time, reality, consciousness, and the self, while holding a looking glass up to contemporary life, to ask, Is this really all there is?—and to answer, No, the possibility for knowledge is endless, and we should never cease searching." —Sarah Gerard, author of Sunshine State “Similar to the psychedelic drugs Tao Lin writes about here, this book introduces new ways to consider language, perception, and recovery. It’s a joy to watch Lin interrogate his obsessions so earnestly and thoroughly in an attempt to understand more about the world as he knows it. Trip is a book for anyone interested in learning about what the human mind is capable of seeing and believing.” —Chelsea Hodson, author of Tonight I’m Someone Else “Tao Lin took all the drugs so that we wouldn’t have to, and the result is astonishing, mind-expanding, beautiful, and profound. The whole of humanity seems contained in this one book.” —Kristen Iskandrian, author of Motherest “Tao Lin’s writing reliably restores my sense of the inexhaustible strangeness of even one minute of human thought and feeling.” —Michael W. Clune, author of White Out

Started well ... no rhythm very scattered near the end. Author is a interesting person but he and his writing seems schizophrenic. It’s basically him sharing his random thoughts with us the reader, but there is no conclusion no real insight just a random stream of consciousness. I was hoping for more.

This book is worth the price if you are fascinated by Terence McKenna as the author, a devotee, has an extensive knowledge of him. The first section focuses on Terence and his insights. Otherwise a self indulgent account of a relapsing pathetic drug addict, impossible for me to finish. If you want to be inside the muddled self centered mind of a person struggling with addiction you might rate it higher than me.

Overall, the book was ok. The author does a great job writing about Mckenna; those were the parts of the book that I liked: in particular, chapters 1 & 2. I stopped reading after the section on DMT... that part of the book seemed so painfully irrelevant, so scattered, and the next chapter seemed to be going right along in the same direction... I just had to put it down. Sorry, Tao.

Tao Lin's unique language, which synthesized his experiences with Terence McKenna, psychedelics, and Kathleen Harrison, wormed its way into my heart, soul, and actual dreams at night. I learned a lot of new things that I can't quite put into words.

I selected this book to read during 26 hours of travel. Parts were interesting and engaging, but the excitement was not sustainable

Enjoyed a lot. Felt good about the psychedelic stuff. If you've listened to a lot of Mckenna some parts feel familiar but it's fun to read Tao extrapolating from that and compare with ideas/events from his own life, like he also does with Weston A. Price and Riane Eisler. I like how he doesn't completely subscribe to any one view of the modern world. He seems to simultaneously be able to view a lot of parts of it as bleak and other parts as exciting and even hopeful. I think he took Terence a little too seriously about the 'I don't believe anything' thing. He said that a lot but it still feels, to me at least, like he strongly leaned towards Novelty Theory being true, and was also firmly rooted to the need for an Archaic Revival. He often seemed to me like a 'True Believer,' but one who was savvy enough to know how skeptical people were of both experts and evangelicals and so said things like that he only had 'models' (but I think it's only the top level stuff--things that seemed obvious to him, like that psychedelics would have to become important for a positive future outcome for humanity --that I think he firmly held to. A lot his ideas he did probably, it seems, view as expendable) But since I kind of believe that stuff it didn't really bother me.The book also encouraged me, through reading about Tao's experience with and gratefulness towards it, to begin again to use cannabis with a new attitude of viewing it as it's own intentional helper. I like this new view and how it's making me feel. I wanted to see some more things about the relationship between psychedelics and spirituality. Terence said different things. Like he sometimes said they were obviously intertwined, maybe earlier in his career i'm guessing, and then other times said stuff like he wasn't sure they had much to do with each other. I wanted (at some point before reading the book, imagining what the book was going to be about) to hear about Tao's view on the matter, but maybe it wasn't considered to be interesting or relevant or maybe it was not considered at all. The back of the book said stuff about 'what happens after death?' but that wasn't really talked about except for repeating without not a lot of examination Terence's 'death is a release into the the imagination.' Realizing now that I'd been assuming that a lot of people reading the book would be familiar with Terence's ideas but I overestimated the overlap of people who are interested in him and Tao because of his (Mckenna's) prevalence on Tao's online, (mainly Twitter it seems) presence, and that maybe to a lot of people these are going to be 100% new ideas which will, due to their newness, have a large effect on them, which seems exciting (just to have a lot of people discussing, or maybe just thinking about, interesting ideas, even ones that are maybe smirked at by certain different kinds of people). One of my favorite parts of the book was in the epilogue when Tao feels depressed and poignantly assures himself, despite the depressive thing of it seeming permanent, that there would come times that he would feel better. I view 'Trip,' or at least a lot, of it as kind of a culmination of the last months or maybe years of Tao's online presence, having followed probably all of it. I view the new, before-unseen parts, like his detailed trip reports and a lot of the Kathleen Harrison stuff as a sort of 'bonus.' I intuit that there are more things I vaguely feel like I can convey about my experience of reading 'Trip,' but am self-conscious about how long this review is for an Amazon comments section, and am so going to stop typing after the next sentence. I greatly appreciate everything Tao Lin writes makes me feel more interested in art and less alone in the world, and I feel massively grateful for him having communicated his Mckenna-influenced worldview and sharing his often-convincing view of and beliefs about both modern and general living.

Lin is hyper-detailed, seemingly socially awkward, brilliant, acute, exploratory, brave and curious. While at times he seems to go into too much detail about mundane ongoings, I'm thinking that's the point. He describes recordings down to the second, pays acute attention to everyone he interacts with, and places it humorously and starkly in context. "Trip" is beautiful, made me feel nervous, anxious, excited, sad, giddy and curious- I respect Lin and see quite a bit of myself in him.

While the book lacks the quiet desperation that colors Tao’s earlier work, it’s made up for in an ever-researching, optimistic ‘trip’ towards recovery.

You will never go wrong with a "Mahu" themed book from Neil Plakcy. I've bought everything in the series and have loved each book. The characters, the development of those characters across the series, the pacing, plotting, and the description of locations along with insights into the local culture all work together for a satisfying mystery experience. I can say nothing critical about his work. This author has another series that is a bit racier. This one deals with a pair of bodyguards who work in exotic locations around the Mediterranean, including Northern Africa, Southern France, and Corsica. If you like erotica, and I unapologetically do, Plakcy has written and/or edited collections of MM erotica so hot the pages threaten to self-ignite. Add to all this information the fact Plakcy is an Ivy-educated man who studied writing at (PENN) and business at Columbia (MBA), then earned an MFA in Creative writing at a small Florida institution, and you realize you have one obviously smart, clearly gifted fellow writing for your personal entertainment.

This collection of short stories builds on the excellent series of "Mahu" books featuring Kimo Kanapaka and his partner Mike Riccardi. Having read all the books in the series, I found these stories immediately engrossing. The story of the birth of their children delivered real emotional punch for those who have followed the lives of these men. Again, I find myself eager to read the next novel or story collection.

Int. he has never been invited to Murder on the Beach bookstore in Delray Beach 40 min from his job in Ft.Lauderdale. Have read entire seriesand have been to donut shop in Honolulu....

great read

fun stories to fill in between the longer books

Another Scattered Thoughts and Rogue Words.com reviewRating: 4.5 stars out of 5 (rounded up to 5)Sex, mayhem and justice in the Aloha State as openly gay Honolulu homicide detective tracks murderers, missing people & a dog with unusual appetites.Openly gay Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa’aka has had a long and storied career with the Honolulu PD in the Aloha State of Hawaii. In this selection of ten short investigations in the Aloha State, Kimo goes from rookie officer to seasoned homicide detective in a range of cases from a hearse carrying more than bodies and a psychic with some surprising information for Kimo and his partner.A wonderful introduction to the rich cultures of the Hawaiian populace as seen through the eyes of its complicated native son. The stories are captivating, sometimes humorous and always richly layered. A must for all lovers of detectives on the hunt and mysteries waiting to be solved.I first discovered Neil Plakcy and his Hawaiian detective, Kimo Kanapa’aka, towards the end of the Mahu series with the novel Natural Predators (Mahu #7). That book was such a revelation. Plakcy had created in Kimo Kanapa’aka a richly nuanced, highly complex character, one steeped in his family and Hawaiian culture. Coming in at the seventh story, I had missed out on all the character and relationship growth that had taken place prior so that Kimo, his domestic partner, and, foster son could have an established and happy home life. But the novel had enough glimpses into past stories to let the reader know that the climb to such a contented arrangement has been fraught with pain, difficulties, and a few partings. That alluring back history was enough to send me racing back to the beginning to see how it all began and meet Kimo at the start of his career.Accidental Contact and Other Mahu Investigations allows a reader new to the Mahu series a chance to dip into the life and cases of Kimo and his department at various stages of his life and career. As the blurb informs “from murderers to missing babies to a shaggy dog with an unusual appetite, openly gay Honolulu homicide detective Kimo Kanapa’aka has his hands full…” with cases both extraordinary and colorful. But what really sets this detective apart from his counterparts is Plakcy’s ability to bring all aspects of the myriad Hawaiian cultures to life via vivid imagery and a use of colloquialisms and dialects, slang and tonal flow of the voices that swim in that great pot of peoples, traditions, lore, and even societal prejudices known as Hawaii.I can get lost in the conversations alone that Plakcy lays out for his characters. It can sound like music, all soft and flowing with all those 5 vowels and 7 consonants that make up the Hawaiian alphabet, yet what they are actually conveying can be painful and harsh. Such a dichotomy originates and flows from the land itself. The author makes the reader see and feel the real Hawaii, not just those postcard beaches and Diamond Head scenes so familiar from travelogues everywhere. From the ghettos and dark streets teaming with characters as unforgettable as the cases they appear in to the hillsides where the huge and diverse Kanapa’aka family reside, this author takes us on a journey limited only by the natural boundaries of the islands. And no matter where the destination, or level of society, Plakcy imbues his characters so throughly with all the flaws and human dimension that all levels feel authentic and believable. Even the criminals here have their own language with which they impart their own rules and lawlessness yet still remained tied in their own way to their families and cultures.Accidental Contact and Other Mahu Investigations gets its name from a most memorable excuse an offender offers up to Kimo and his partner during an investigation. I won’t spoil the reference for you all, its just one of the many delights to be found here. Normally with a collection, I rate the stories but I can’t do that with this collection. Each brought its own groups of surprises and memorable moments. Some ended abruptly just as shaggy dog stories should, others continue to the final satisfactory ending you would hope for. The end result of them all is to send me once more back to that first story and being my journey with Kimo all over again. When I think of fine regional voices, the ones that pull you immediately into a culture and region, Neil Plakcy jumps immediately to mind. His Mahu series should be on everyone’s list of Must Have, Must Read stories and series. And Kimo Kanapa’aka rates just as highly among the detectives I have come to know and love. Let this collection be a quick introduction to this marvelous series and author. And then let it guide you back to all the other fine stories and a romance and love affair to savor. I highly recommend them all.Cover art by Kris Jacen. I love the cultural feel of this cover. Works perfectly for this collection of stories.

Accidental Contact, and other Mahu InvestigationsBy Neil PlakcyFour starsShort stories are difficult. Difficult to write well, and often less satisfying (for me) to read. But I always counter that with the fact that a good anthology can be a real pleasure—like this group of tales that Plakcy has written as sort of “in-betweens” for his seven “Mahu” novels. As a major fan of Plakcy’s “Mahu” series, I of course wanted to read these stories, which are scattered around throughout the course of the seven novels that document Kimo Kanapa’aka. Because I know the Mahu books so well, it is effortless to enter the world of Hawai’i created by Plakcy—the duality of this tropical paradise, beauty and ugliness. If you’ve read the “Mahu” series, each story becomes a little nugget of extra flavor to enjoy, thinking about the various larger themes that pervade this group of novels—Kimo’s coming out, his maturation as a proud gay man, his evolving relationship, and—most important of all—the critical importance that his network of family and friends, ‘Ohana, has for him. Some of the stories are sad, because the murders involved are, well sad. I think my favorite story, however, is “Kelly Green,” not only because it reminds me of my own propensity to wear pants that color in my younger days, but because the story is about parents and gay children finding each other again. No murder in this one. This is not an anthology that would make a lot of sense to someone who hasn’t read the Mahu books—at least the background information wouldn’t resonate. But Plakcy’s simple, clear descriptive writing would be a pleasure to read regardless. But, I’d save this book until I’d finished the series—it’s like whipped cream on a great dessert (or gravy on a favorite dish?).
