Straight Talk on Trade: Ideas for a Sane World Economy, by Dani Rodrik

From the Back Cover

"All economists should read Straight Talk on Trade to appreciate how their own models are often richer than their policy advice. And all noneconomists should read this book to appreciate how much economics has to offer on the biggest questions of growth and inequality. The length of this book belies its stunning scope, ranging from developed to developing countries, the past to the present, and political science to economics. Dani Rodrik's eclectic methodology and advice support his unwavering, optimistic belief that economic ideas can and should help people shape their destinies."--Jason Furman, Harvard Kennedy School and former chairman of the White House Council of Economic Advisers"There is a ton of erudition and not an ounce of orthodoxy in this compact, incisive book. Dani Rodrik analyzes policy like an economist and analyzes economics like a philosopher. The net effect is a disarmingly fresh and penetrating set of insights on national self-determination, fair versus free trade, and the rich interplay between markets, governments, and individual identity in sustaining stable nation-states. Arguing for a rethinking and rebalancing of the teetering project of globalization, Rodrik offers something to delight and offend every reader."--David Autor, Massachusetts Institute of Technology"Dani Rodrik is one of the most original thinkers today on economics and development. In Straight Talk on Trade, he explains why there is so much discontentment with the multilateral system, and offers interesting proposals for how we might preserve what is good about it. This is a must-read for anyone interested in the roots of populist nationalism and the widespread angst in industrial societies today."--Raghuram Rajan, University of Chicago"Straight Talk on Trade presents a straightforward and readable agenda to make globalization serve democracy rather than undermine it, while avoiding the populist remedies being hawked by politicians today."--Francis Fukuyama, Stanford University"Amongst today's mainstream economists, there is a cottage industry of experts rationalizing the backlash against globalization. Dani Rodrik was one of the very few who warned about this backlash at least a decade in advance when the world was in thrall to the globalization fetish. A terrific guide to understanding this swinging pendulum, Straight Talk on Trade offers sensible suggestions on how not to love globalization if we are to preserve its many undeniable benefits."--Arvind Subramanian, chief economic adviser to the Government of India"Straight Talk on Trade looks at the possibility that the world has proceeded too hastily with globalization and emphasized globalization of the wrong kind. Dani Rodrik contends that we have neglected notions of national sovereignty at our peril, and his knowledge, sources, methods, and arguments are all first-rate and battle-tested."--Tyler Cowen, author of The Complacent Class"Not many economists are able to make astute observations about economics and politics based not only on professional knowledge but also on common sense. And only a few can speak at once to the academic economist, the economics student, applied economists, and intelligent readers outside the field. In Straight Talk on Trade, Dani Rodrik accomplishes this and more."--Ariel Rubinstein, Tel Aviv University and New York University

Anyone who already enjoys Rodrik's Project Synicate column will find the collection of articles in this book quite insightful. While not getting into the nitty gritty of international economics and trade policy (as I had hoped for) the book compensated by digging into a plethora of fascinating topics, like development, inequality, politics and globalization. The ideas and concepts expressed in this book deserve attention from both sides of the political aisle. But while pointing out the problems and the symptoms, this book came up short on practical solutions.Building upon his main ideas from "The Globalization Paradox", Rodrik presents the academic work himself and others have done in development, trade and political economy to support his arguments. I enjoyed the section which highlighted the unappreciated role ideology plays in political economy, in addition to self-interest (which receives much of the attention) as well as the distinction between liberal and "illiberal" democracy. The book is as much politics as it is economics. And like Rodrik's previous books, the writing was readable and engaging.I would recommend this book to the interested layperson, poli sci and econ undergrads and the general public. However, professional economists may be underwhelmed if they are already familiar with Rodrik's work.

Rather than a treatise on trade this book is a survey of the global political economy with comments on relevant global politics. The chapters don’t link well together relative to subject matter discussed except this central theme of surveying the globe. The individual subjects within the chapter somewhat stand alone. Because the author is a polished writer, it works as a reading experience while lacking as a learning experience. There is more description of the current state than insights. Anyone reading popular prominent publications - Economist, FT, NYT, WSJ - has seen or intuited much of the material. After about 100 pages I wondered about the intended audience because the nature of the presentation changed from chapter to chapter, subject to subject. It was all very well presented and I learned about areas of the globe where knowledge was scant, or where I had chosen not to learn.Overall the book is a considered, thoughtful view of the global landscape of which trade is a part. The tone is counsel from an insightful, knowledgeable observer who is willing to identify and describe the challenging issues, seemingly unsolvable dilemmas, ask tough questions, and offer a few prescriptions. Unfortunately, as noted in the first sentence, the solutions come down to politics, power structures, and vested interests.I recommend the book with the proviso that if you do a lot of reading, many (but not all) insights have either been expressed in other places or you have figured them out yourself. It’s a 5 star book if you wish an overview on the current politics that affect global economics and trade, 4 star if you are into reading about global politics. For me, 4.

I find that my hit percentage on economics books is about 50%. One out of every two books I read is excellent, and the other is awful. Very little seems to be in between. Unfortunately for me, this book is in the latter group. It is supposed to be, I think, an effort to show that a mainstream economist can be less than totally enthused about unlimited free trade and “hyper-globalization,” without being on the side of Trump or “illiberal democracies,” and without giving up his neoliberal ID card. But "Straight Talk on Trade" is just a mess. Why that is so is given away in the Preface. The reader’s heart drops when Dani Rodrik informs us this is not a fresh book, but merely a compilation of “my monthly syndicated columns, as well as a few other short and lengthier pieces, [of which] I have done only a light edit of the original text.” In other words, this is simply a mélange of rewarmed offerings done earlier on a deadline, not tied together in any meaningful way, other than that the theme is “economics.” It is not the “visionary framework” promised by the dust cover; rather, it is what is known as a “money grab.” I should have stopped reading there. But I did not. I suffered that you may avoid suffering.Holistically, Rodrik’s project seems to be to rescue globalization from its excesses. That is, he is a neoliberal in good standing, no doubt chummy with George Soros and Pankaj Mishra, but he is afraid that the evil populists are given ammunition by economists and politicians who over-promise what globalization has to offer, and then under-deliver the social goods to their constituents. Not for Rodrik, therefore, fantasies about emerging global governance or the demise of the nation-state. Instead, he preaches that the nation-state has to be run by clear-eyed politicians who will save us from the populist beasts. In this project, though, he has to walk a tightrope, since he can’t afford to be seen as an ally of the beasts—but he agrees with some of their points, such as that the Trans-Pacific Partnership was probably a bad idea, and that perhaps we should note that some people are made worse off by globalization. To the end of rescuing globalization, from its excesses and its enemies, Rodrik offers twelve chapters, each just copied from his earlier work. Concepts and phrases frequently overlap and are repeated, so it is hard to tease out a set of principles, much less a “visionary framework.” But if you poke at the pile enough, several basic points, all simplistic and unoriginal, pop out their heads. First, economics is hard and non-specific, and economists too often express pithy certainties to the media which they do not really believe in their unqualified form. Second, gains from free trade are unevenly distributed, within any given country, and between countries as well. Third, developing countries that are not yet developed may have trouble developing to First World standards, due to structural limitations in the global economy. Fourth, although each country should choose its own path, developing countries will pay no cost at all if they immediately implement a full-scale social justice regime as they develop, and in fact all developing countries are morally obligated to do so. Fifth, democracy, but only approved forms of it, is just awesome, and an economic tonic like none other.Surrounding these points, like a mist of stinging insects, are tiresome obeisances to the imperative need for more “liberalism” for everyone in the world (meaning, of course, policies dictated by the Left that aggressively implement emancipation and individual autonomy are the only ones allowed), demands for more action against global warming, claims how unspecified “green technologies” and “green industry” are needed to save both the world and its economies, demands for how we must have increased global re-distribution to achieve “social legitimacy,” and innumerable vague calls for “social justice.” Punctuating this cloud of annoyance are jarring uses of obscure economics-speak without any clarification, such as “a corner solution” and “economists’ beloved Arrow-Debreu model of general equilibrium.” And framing it all are constant preening references to “my [other] book, so-and-so,” used as a shortcut to avoid actually demonstrating a point. Moreover, all the writing in this book has an odd characteristic; it may come from Rodrik being excellently educated in English, but only as a second language (he’s from Turkey). That characteristic is that every paragraph seems very clear—but at the end of it, or of a series of paragraphs, the reader is basically unsure what was actually said. I can’t figure out why. Maybe there is little substance. Maybe there aren’t enough thesis statements buttressed by reasoning. But you can read page after page and you get a feeling like cotton candy—you think there should be something there, and it felt like there was something there, but it melted away leaving no trace (and without leaving a sweet taste). It is most disturbing.Weird errors abound, as well. It is not true that American unemployment checks come from the federal government. “Civil rights” is not the same thing as “the rule of law”—in fact, Rodrik’s lengthy discussion trying to show how some “electoral democracies” are not really democracies, because they are “illiberal,” may take the cake for the most confused discussion of core political concepts I have ever seen offered by a major author. “Culture shock” does not mean “situations where our expectations about people’s behavior turn out to be so wrong that we find ourselves jolted by the experience.” Every so often, to be fair, there is something interesting, such as a solid attempt to resurrect mercantilism, properly defined and updated, as a counterpoint to classical liberalism (although this is somewhat undercut by a total failure to understand that government regulation of, and government support for, business are not the same thing). But mostly, as I say, it is just a mess.Ultimately, what this leaves us with is mushy analysis and prescriptions that are vague bromides or simply incoherent. The topics here are much better covered in Clyde Prestowitz’s "The Betrayal of American Prosperity" (in fact, it was Prestowitz’s review of this book that caused me to buy and read it), or Richard Baldwin’s "The Great Convergence." Or even in Robert Gordon’s "The Rise and Fall of American Growth," if the topic is relative amounts and impacts of innovation over time. And as far as political structure, Francis Fukuyama offers a coherent neoliberal perspective and analysis, something utterly lacking here. If you read those books, then read this book, you will go backward, so just read those books.

Roderik talks longer about the global situations: his hope is that the economics works without too national interests which produce asymmetry of the markets. The author believes in the maximization of expectations, so he would like an economics back-ground, where the liberal actions of agents is more important than the closures of the single State. The style is very clear; everyone, which knows a little part of the micro-economics, can understand the sense, without too technical particularities, but considering the importance of the customer role as that of manager. A book which one can read with pleasure for all those facts.

Drawn in quickly by the story, if you are like me, you will be carrying it around with you, if you can’t finish it in one sitting! The story is compelling, with some sad parts, but it quickly becomes riveting, with action that leaves you wondering what more is going to happen. The end is well worth the read, believe me!!

Another wonderful story. Each book in the Potter’s House Books just keeps getting better. What I enjoy most in the books is to read about hoe the characters grow in their walk. With the Lord. In all of the books all the glory and honor is given to the Lord throughout the development of the story.

This book will touch your heart. No matter how low you have fell, God is waiting to pick you up. If you are looking for a good, clean christian book, grab this one. This book was definitely a page turner.

I truly liked this story. I wasn't sure about it when I found out it is about an abused woman, but am so very glad I read it. Abuse was mentioned but not described, thank goodness. Getting help and moving on with God's help drives this wonderful story of healing. Highly recommend!!!

Hollywood is a great equalizer . . .or so we think. women can have a great career . . . . but how about a great love? Is it as fake as the movies? Especially for an actress who goes against her upbringing?

Our heroine learnt that fame and fortune is no guarantee of happiness. That behind the glittering facade there can be unspeakable pain. But God is always faithful and His mercy has no limits. You will finish the story on a sigh of joy.

Very good book.

Dawn of Mercy was such a heart warming and real to life story. Kara's big dream in life was to be a successful actress so she moved at a young age to LA to follow her dreams. She lived with her boyfriend, Jamie, who was a model. Jamie was into the partying life and drank too much and was a little too friendly with other women. Kara finally got her big chance and got a leading role. Jamie was so jealous of her being on set and having to do kissing scenes and was very suspicious of everything Kara did and accused her of having an affair. Jamie lashed out his anger at Kara hitting her and grabbing her arms too tightly. Makeup could only hide so many bruises on her face. Fortunately Kara realized it was time to get out of that relationship and moved out. Dr. Martensen worked in the hospital ER and wanted to help Kara. Can Kara regain her faith in God and move forward in her life after being abused? You will have to read this great story to see how Dr. Martensen is able to help her. I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy of this book.
