Review

"For centuries we've counted on children to take real responsibilities for the animals that provided us with food and companionship. In the process, kids not only grew food, but they also grew their own sense of themselves as capable beings. Barnyard Kids gives kids the tools to dream about and plan for raising farm animals, empowering anyone who reads it to imagine a life with farm animals and then to act to make it real; it will have a special place on the bookshelf in the barn at The Farm School." - Ben Holmes, founder, The Farm School

I love everything about this book. There. I said it. I'll be honest. I bought it for the photographs which give a warm, intimate, and appealing sense of farm animals and farm life. And, as you would expect from a photojournalist of Dina Rudick's caliber, it is full of great photographs by her, her husband Erik Jacobs, and others. If you did no more than buy this as a picture book for children, you would be delighted. But it is so much more! I was surprised by the depth of information provided and the warm practicality of the text. Clearly organized into chapters by animal (chickens, pigs, sheep & goats, cows, horses, and rabbits), the informative, upbeat text gives children and their families a full sense of what is involved to raise healthy, happy, and productive farm animals."What makes them tick?" "What makes them sick?" " Where do they live?" "What can they give?" Each chapter details the animal's basic anatomy. It discusses the animal's psychology, its social nature, and its special housing and handling needs and systems. It details food and water requirements, and unique health and safety concerns. Though it stops short of providing processing details, it does describe the potential products from each animal, and how long it takes to get an animal to a suitable weight for processing. A Q&A section covers frequent concerns, and a summation describes what life is like living with that particular animal.Although I was content to merely imagine life with farm animals, after reading this book, I'm actively considering inviting a few goats or chickens into our lives. I found it that inspiring and informative.

beyond the pretty pictures.. informative tome that will actually include your kids as well as give you, the adults, information to ensure successful farming. Please note - most "farming books"either are focused on "pretty" or go directly to "adult implementation". this book bridges the gap and is usable to both generation.

As a farming, homeschooling mom, I found this an amazing resource for on-the-farm-learning, for myself and my kids. The book is well organized by each animal type and gives the characteristics of each animal, what to watch/prepare for each species, and the benefits of each. With eye-catching photos and diagrams, this book draws in the smallest of children, while filled with information for older kids and adults, as well. My own children (ages 1 to 12) love to enjoy the book together. My youngest is learning animal names and sounds, while my oldest tells me why one of our animals is displaying an odd behavior, all after reading this book! And I love Barnyard Kids! This book has brought the beauty of farming back to our farm. Through Ms. Rudick's amazing photos, I'm seeing our own animals and our land with refreshed perception.Whether you're a farmer, or a parent/grandparent/aunt or uncle, this is an amazing book for any child or family. It teaches kids about farming, animals, and where their food should come from. We all need to reconnect with the land and the true value of animals, and this book is a great means to do so!

Great book with terrific pictures. Bought it for my young nieces and nephews and my 14 year old wanted it! While everything can be found on the web these days it's nice to have a basic reference book for kids to look at and read.

I absolutely LOVE this book! I bought it to read together with my 4 young daughters! It is full of helpful information and tips. If you are looking for a book that will be your "go to" book about farm animals and helping your children learn about them, this is your book! Also, the pictures are stunning! My 4 year old loves looking at pictures of farm animals, and this book goes with us when we are out an about as the pictures in it make her smile and remind her of her own chickens. It even keeps her entertained in church. We have chickens now, but this book makes me want to try other barnyard animals too! I will be purchasing a few more copies for my friends and family!

Barnyard Kids: A Family Guide for Raising AnimalsFrom picture book to educational guide this book is absolutely delightful. Whether you're reading it with your kids or for your own pleasure there is something in here for "kids" of all ages. Beautiful photographs and informative illustrations lend themselves perfectly to the informative and often witty prose crafted by author Dina Rudick. This book is also gorgeously designed - the paper, the typeface used, the layout of the photos and illustrations! I bought two - one for the kids and one for coffee table to have a keepsake (because this book is sure to be a family favorite for years to come!)

A wonderful book to enjoy with your grandchildren. The pictures are wonderful and the text is well done. I would recomend this for any child's reading pleasure.

A Great Book for introducing children and families to caring for animals.

"This book is profound, practical, and a pleasure to read. It stretches our thinking and brings us to a place where we can see the Kingdom of God spread across the world in our generation. This book has come at the right time." --John C. Maxwell, founder, INJOY, INJOY Stewardship Services and EQUIP "My life is about seeing hundredfold results. Neil Cole’s approach helps get those kinds of results for churches by planting many new expressions of the Kingdom that reach thousands of people. One of the great joys of my life for the past six years has been to watch the dramatic growth of Awakening Chapels and the organic churches described in this work. Cole’s new book tell not only the inspiring story but also describes the principles, so you can apply these ideas." --Bob Buford, founder and chairman, Leadership Network; author, Halftime and Finishing Well "I always listen when Neil Cole speaks. His breadth of understanding and practice of what he preaches is right on. Everyone should know or be aware of this guy that God is using in a powerful way." --Bob Roberts, senior pastor, NorthWood Church, Keller, Texas "Neil Cole is one of the foremost thinkers and practitioners organic forms of church. His vision of the church is as new as it is ancient. Cole’s story as well as the philosophy of Church Multiplication Associates is paradigmatic for the church as it seeks to negotiate its way faithfully into the twenty-first century." --Alan Hirsch, director, Forge Mission Training Network, church planter; author, The Shaping of Things to Come "In an age where millions are saying ‘God yes, church no!’ most of us instinctively feel that church as we know it prevents church as God wants it. But where, exactly, is the catch? Where do we go from here? Neil Cole expertly places a thrilling invitation before us to join probably the most exciting spiritual pilgrimage going on today: the global migration of a church on the way back home. Come and dial in!" --Wolfgang Simson, author, Houses that Change the World  "Church multiplication is not likely to be the province of ivory tower theoreticians! In Organic Church  Neil Cole helps us to understand that church multiplication is never going to be a spectator sport. This is hands down the most useful and comprehensive book currently available to understanding the rapidly growing expressions of simple, organic church life around the world." --Dr. N. A. (Tony) Dale, editor, House 2 House Magazine  "I heartily recommend this book. It is packed with deep insights; you will find no fluff in it. Among the books on church planting, it offers a rare combination of attributes: it is biblical and well written, its model has proven effective, and it is authored by a practitioner rather than an observer or an ivory-tower theoretician." --Curtis Sergeant, directory of church planting, Saddleback Church, Lake Forest, California "It is a great joy to recommend Neil Cole’s  Organic Church. The stories and experiences in this book will encourage many to follow the Holy Spirit and go where God is leading. Neil Cole is a true pioneer in the faith and a man of great vision who has chosen to live out the things that God has poured into him. I believe this book will ignite hearts to live out their faith in organic communities across the country and around the world." --Rev. Michael Steele, North American director, Dawn Ministries "Neil Cole is a true trailblazer for today’s church.  His story will inspire you and equip you to experience the living Christ in community." --Jonathan S. Campbell Ph.D., author, The Way of Jesus

I really wish I could have given the book a better rating because it is in some ways an important book with an excellent theme. The institutional church in the west has gotten to be an organization rather than the organism the New Testament says it is supposed to be. Full time clergy have wrestled everyday ministry from the body of Christ as if there was no priesthood of believers at all. The line between the professionals and everyone else has gotten both bolder and thicker so fewer people who profess Christ seem to be on mission at all. The book captures these ideas really well as a critique.I think the book falls down in two areas, both of which have been commented elsewhere so I won't go into detail. First of all, the Neil is sloppy and almost condescending at times about the church as it exists and has existed in history. It's hard to believe he criticized the Apostles for remaining in Jerusalem. His criticism of the orthodox definition of a church because it didn't have Jesus was a bit silly in my opinion (as it seems his friend agreed with me), and what does it mean that a 15-year old girl "started a church." I'm pretty sure Paul knew some 15-year old girls and didn't send any of them to plant churches. In fact, Paul said elders were necessary in churches and said one of the criteria for an elder was "not a new believer" which Neil seems to disagree with. (Neil does cite churches in China as examples for how quickly growth can happen, but he doesn't comment on the really bad theology that is present there or the influence of cults like Eastern Lightning on the church there because of the lack of elder qualified men leading many of those house churches.) There are lots of other theological problems with the book both big and small that I simply don't feel the need to list because I am not trying to beat up on Neil.I think the second place the book falls down is in the application of these principles, and that's partly related to the theological gaps. I would have liked to know what criteria is used to determine when one of these tiny churches plants another church and how they decide who ends up leading it. From the narrative, it seems like he encourages women and new believers to start churches but I don't know that he ever comes out and says that. He does mention multiple times that a worship leader is important in a new church which isn't in the Bible since Romans 12:1-2 says all of life is worship so I gather that's important to him but I don't know anything else from this book.Like I said, I am glad I read the book. It is an easy read with colorful commentary. It is a solid challenge to the establishment churches who are doing things their way and insist that their experience rather than the bible be used as a guide, but I'm afraid as helpful as Neil's perspective is in some areas he does the same thing by explaining his experience as God's anticipated norm.

This book was a catalyst for retiring my brain. As an Anglican, our ecclesiology is building and clergy centric. Cole exposes the way our tradition as Anglicans needs tweaking if we want to be part of God's redemptive work in the world. Two critical points were exponentially worth the price of the book. First, the best soil is where the soil is darkest from fertilization. The Gospel grows best among people most in need of transformation and healing. Second, the best evangelists are the newly redeemed. My tradition must free ourselves from our buildings and ministry-consuming ideas. Instead we must make homes, pubs, coffee houses, libraries, and even strip clubs the place for us to bring the Gospel. And the clergy must be freed from the notion that they are NPO managers so they can help train and empower others to evangelize the growing fields ripe for harvest.

Organic Church: Growing Faith Where Life Happens (2005): By Neil Cole"The Most Receptive Soil, is Often that Which is Most Fertilized"Neil Cole tells his story of going from a pastor and church planting resource developer for his denomination, to becoming part of an organic church producing movement. One of the most inspiring stories Neil shares is that upon first review by his denominational assessment, Cole was not approved to be a church planter. Yet after several years and many experiences in organic church he was retested by C. Ridley's church planter's assessment, and scored higher in the areas of his previous incompetence. Cole is very honest in sharing both the success and failures he's experienced, and is not shy about sharing the story of Church Multiplication Associates or CMA, either.I definitely enjoyed Part Three: From the Microscope to the Telescope and Pat Four: The Epidemic Kingdom and How it Spreads the most because Neil explains the "how-to" of organic multiplication. In the front of my copy of Organic Church I have written down the main themes as they relate to the American post-Christian, agri-culture: A) Remember Jesus is Lord of the Harvest and the Master Gardener. Only God produces growth and He knows when it is time to prune. B) The Laborers always need to be aware of what season they are in C) Sometimes you need to till the ground and pull weeds before you can plant. D) The most receptive soil is often that which is most fertilized E) Living Water and Light are essential. F) Growth happens first, and then fruit is produced. G) Branches must stay connected to the Vine in order to live and thrive H) Seed is meant to be scattered.Lastly, the spiritual DNA of an organic church looks like this: (D)ivine Truth-Faith, (N)urturing Relationships- Love, (A)postolic Mission-Hope.

Great book, but with a very small font size - both me and my husband were unpleasantly surprised.Lots of information, but again - hard to read as casual reading - need to have good lightning source and so on.

This book is very useful for those that want to teach their babies to swim. I recommend you buy it before or right after the baby is born, because it is better to start with a few weeks old, and I waited too long to buy it.

I took an infant swim class in college years ago and was looking for the curriculum I used there. I bought several books and while this is a pretty good one, not all of the methods are practical. Still, there is not much available on infant swimming lessons and anything is better than nothing so it was a good purchase.
